Lost Planet: Extreme Condition can be considered a game type that is quickly becoming a rarity in today’s gaming world. The game is an original franchise made from scratch specifically for a console, and it is not a sequel. You just do not see too many games with those stats these days, much to gamers’ chagrin. Even so, originality and “not-being-a-sequel-ness,” in and of itself, is not enough to make a game great, or even good. Does Lost Planet have what it takes to seal the deal? Let’s find out.

The protagonist in LP is Wayne, who is on the cliché quest to avenge his father’s death. His pops was crushed by a giant Akrid called Green Eye. The Akird are insectoid monsters who inhabit the planet E.D.N. III, the planet that was chosen as the new home for humankind when Earth was made uninhabitable. Well, now that you have the story in a nutshell, just throw in the obligatory big-breasted female tough-girl, the evil corporation called NEVEC, and the standard sci-fi scenario, and you have Lost Planet.

E.D.N. III is mostly covered with ice, and the temperature is usually sub-zero, so the landscape is rather bland, to say the least. This does not mean the cut scenes and CG are boring though, far from it. This is Capcom after all, and they make sure the story has enough twists and turns to hold the attention of even the most story-driven gamer. The cinematics use the in-game engine, they are not computer generated, but you would never know just at a glance – they are beautiful. The voice-overs and dialogue leaves much to be desired, but once the action starts up again, all the bad action and sub-par writing in the world cannot put a damper on things.

For some reason it seems Capcom thinks action and the Xbox360 go hand in hand. This is a good thing, folks. As you fight your way through different maps, both indoor and outdoor, wave upon wave of insects will try to use you for food. As you blast your way through the Akrid, you will find battle-ready mechs along the way. These pilotable robots are called VS units (that’s V-S not versus).
