Sony has revealed that the PSN HOME virtual space has been downloaded over 6.5 million times. They also stated that profit is not the "driving priority" at the moment. In other words, HOME is not making money. Sony plans to keep beefing up the HOME space with more and more spaces and activities, likely until they can turn a profit. PS HOME director Peter Edward said that the monetization aspect of it [HOME] will almost take care of itself, once you get a platform that people want to keep coming back to."
