Starbreeze Says 360 & PS3 Screenshots Will Look Identical >
2006/05/02 22:54:59: Posted by DM
IGN also got the chance to speak with Jens Andersson, lead designer, Enclave, Riddick, Mikael Säker, story and game designer, Riddick, Magnus Högdahl, technical director, Enclave, Riddick, and Gustaf Grefberg, sound designer and composer, Enclave, Riddick to get a keener sense of the game's development, its sound design, and the online components, among other things. The interview itself is full of great game info, but the most important quote is:

Magnus Högdahl: The PS3 will have a content size advantage with blu-ray and a CPU advantage for titles that are able to utilize a lot of the SPUs. The Xbox360 has a slight GPU advantage and its general purpose triple-core CPU is relatively easy to utilize compared to SPUs. I expect that it will be near impossible to tell Xbox360 and PS3 screenshots apart.

This statement more or less says exactly what we have been stating for a while. The Playstation 3 and Xbox360 will run neck-in-neck graphically, and it will be up to the developers to really make the platforms stand out.

No kidding. Multiplatform games will more than likely look identical.

No Shit. But people think PS3 will have better graphics.

When a developer makes no effort to differentiate two ports of the same game then it should surprise no one that the two port will be basicaly identical. They've gone the el cheapo method and designed for the lowest powered system (i wont state which i think that is).

ms has already stated that %85 of all nex-gen games will be mutiplatform. but ms does have the better GPU.

Hello. It's about damn time a real developer stated that. Now, IF the PS3 comes out @ a higher price than the X360 with Basically the same features... When the genral public can actually see that the games are almost identical in everyway, why would you spend more for the game & system ?

M$ has indeed raised the Bar.

Well I agree with his statements, but one thing I'd like to expand on is if everyone here considers what a vertex shader does the 360 gpu is a bit better than "slightly". I'm not trying to dog the ps3, but hear me out.

First what is a vertex shader I took this straight from nvidia's site to avoid any confusion on the definition.

Examples of vertex shading effects include: matrix palette skinning, which allows programmers to create realistic character animation with up to 32 "bones" per joint, allowing them to move and flex convincingly; deformation of surfaces, which gives developers the power to create realistic surfaces such as waves and water that ripples; and vertex morphing, which is used to morph triangle meshes from one shape to another, providing smooth skeletal animation.

The rsx in the ps3 has a max of 8 vertex shader units whereas the 360 at any given moment can have 48 (that is unheard from video cards) and I'm positive it probably wont be taken advantage of till probably 2 years from now maybe someone will try to push the envelope sooner. That wasn't a ps3 flame just pointing out a fact. In time when developers start taking advantage of that extra power the 360 gpu can do things well beyond that of the ps3.

The rsx has more raw horsepower available as it not only has 50 megahertz extra, but its older more traditional seperated pixel and vertex shader units perform more shader operations per clock, but what ultimately hurts the rsx is its efficiency compared to the 360's gpu.

The 360 gpu makes up for the rsx raw horsepower advantage with a unified shader architecture and twice the pixel shader units and 6 times the vertex shader units, but thats not all the 360 gpu is 95-99% efficient at 4XFSAA sustaining a peak fillrate of 16 gigapixels consistently. Don't forget that the ps3's gpu has a video framebuffer memory bandwidth of 48GB/s whereas the 360's gpu has a framebuffer of 256GB/s thanks to the edram.

What it comes down to is there are ALOT of gpus out there, high end pc gpus that have much more raw horsepower than the rsx or the 360's xenos, but how does the xenos inside the 360 have them beat? Efficiency of design. Those gpus out there for the pc with core clock speeds of 650MHZ and up why does the 360 gpu beat them? They aren't efficient enough to cash in on their raw horsepower advantage so realworld performance is much lower whereas thanks to the 256GB/s framebuffer available to the 360 gpu it has an efficiency and a sustained realworld performance to achieve a fillrate of 16 gigasamples per second. The best gpu for pc the x1900xtx (second place 7900GTX) the x1900xtx has a peak fillrate of 10.4 Gigasamples and doesn't achieve all of it the 7900GTX while inferior to the x1900xtx (due to 48 pixel shader units available to the x1900) has a higher peak fillrate, but again due to inefficiency can't achieve it.

The 256GB/s from the edram isn't the only thing that allows the 360 to be ahead its the number of shader units and the unified shader architecutre as well. Think of it as a perfect situation for the xenos wouldn't it be perfect if every gpu made ran at its peak capability at all times? Thats what the xenos is capable of, but ONLY if the developers properly code for it so the potential is there for it to do some damage, but the developers have to know how to handle it.

The easiest way to increase performance on the pc side is to put faster memory in, more megahertz and increase shader units so more work can get done in a shorter time. Both nvidia and ati are moving to a unified shader design though for the pc (ati will be using the 360's gpu design for the pc pretty soon) When ati uses the 360 gpu technology on the pc it will mop the floor with the 360 gpu in every sense of the word EXCEPT framebuffer bandwidth.

Sorry for long post.

Yep, it's all about the games, boys & girls!

Yea indeed it is. When people are enjoying games like warhawk, mgs4, devil may cry, and the many other big ps3 titles nobody will care who has the better cpu, memory, gpu, who's console has the better color, or which console's power supply can be used as a brick and which console's controller can be useful to batman etc :P.

Ok lets get this straight

This guy was Invited to talk about his game "The Darkness" and how that is coming along. When asked this question about graphical difference between the Two console...He is gonig to look at it from his games perceptive...not to comment about the entire Libarly of PS3 and Xbox360 games.....No

He can give you only give you his percpeptive about his game only, and how that is coming along . He has been invited to talk about his game and will base his answers around his Game The Darkness.

I do not think this rules applies to ALL PS3 and Xbox360 games as the guy has unlikely played or seen the entirly libary of games, and how they have progressed Graphically between the Two systems.

I would not apply thi rule to ALL games....but just this one. He has a reason for his stance, since the game is due to release on both Consoles, So saying one is inferior than the other will obviously not go down well, So keeping quality control across both platforms allows much great appeal and acceptance without fighting over which looks better and basically Enjoy "The Darkness" which is his games and what he has been there to talk about.

You get the flow....

Very good point Cyrix_0. Either way he makes money.

Graphically? Peeps one thing you ALL need to understand (which it seems no one does) is the fact that both API's used by the Xbox 360 and PS3 are similar. They both do effects and shaders that will look the same unless one of them has an API that can do a more advance shader or effect that the other can't. The difference between the two will boil down to, which console can have more objects or draw distance of the two. Not which one "looks" better!
