Logitech G5 2007 Gaming Mouse

Logitech has been in the professional PC accessory business for a long time now. In fact, Logitech has even been responsible for some firsts in the PC accessory category. On the review block today though, we have an improved version of their flagship wired gaming mouse, the G5 Laser Mouse, 2007 edition. This mouse is set to compete with the likes of the Razer Copperhead and DeathAdder, and the Microsoft Habu. Does Logitech finally have a winner on its hands with the 2007 edition of their G5? Let’s find out.

At first glance, the G5 ’07 looks very similar to the previous G5 model. This is because the mouse is mainly the same on the outside, with one very big exception. The G5 07 edition features two thumb buttons, whereas the previopus models only had one. Besides this though, the core design of the G5 has not changed much at all.

The shape of the mouse, for those of you who are not familiar with the G5, is akin to the Logitech MX518 – curved to fit in the right hand with rubberized thumb and pinky spots, and the entire mouse has a slight curve like a comma. The bottom of the G5 ’07 has two large Teflon footpads, and one small one as well. The bottom also has the weight cartridge slot – a very useful feature for a gaming mouse.

The G5 ’07 mouse is a full featured gaming accessory, and this means it comes with all the bells and whistles that today’s PC gamer demands. Of course, most of the time these “bells and whistles” consist of useless paper products or certifications, or even bloated software that ends up taking up twice as much HDD space as it should because the configuration interface is loaded with pretty graphics and animations. Well, I am happy to report that the G5 ’07 really has none of this claptrap, and the one extra-special gaming feature it does have, is far from useless.

This mouse comes with a weight cartridge. Inside this cartridge, users can place up to 8 different weights, which can result in up to 36 extra grams of weight inside the actual mouse. Those of you who do not game much on the PC may be asking just why anyone would want to change the weight of their PC mouse. Well, PC gamers are very particular about most things, and this includes their input devices. Just like some gamers prefer a smooth, fast moving mousing surface, some prefer a rougher, slower-moving surface, and weight has much to do with this. A lighter mouse moves much faster and takes less power to get moving across any mousing surface. A heavier mouse, on the other hand, stays put on a mouse pad unless significant force is applied. With the addition of an adjustable weight cartridge, Logitech has put this decision in the hands of the gamer. From not installing the cartridge at all, to inserting the entire 36 grams, Logitech has put us in control, and it really works well. There have been mice previous to the G5 ’07 that have had weight adjustment systems included, but none make it as painless as Logitech does here. The weights even come in a sleek tin case that screams “I’m a hip PC gamer!”

The weight adjustment system is the most visible gaming feature included with the G5, but it is by no means the only feature designed to help gamers. The mouse comes with a braid-covered cord now, as well. The normal wire used to transmit the mouse’s control data to the USB slot is encased inside a braided string which helps to reinforce it, as well as prevent tangles. Unfortunately, the braid can get snagged on anything sharp, and if that happens, you will get a pull in your wire casing. A minor gripe, I know, but there has to be a few downsides. The G5 ’07, as I mentioned previously, now comes with two thumb buttons. The G5s, as well as most Logitech gaming mice previous to this, have come with just 1 thumb button. Well, those days are gone, folks. There are now two thumb buttons on the mouse, forward and back. These buttons are places perfectly, and the old concerns about pressing the thumb buttons by accident are just that – old concerns. The G5 also comes with the standard scroll wheel, but just like everything else on the mouse, it is beefed up a bit. The wheel features left and right click buttons so not only can you click the wheel down and have it function as a button, but on the G5 you can click it left and right as well in order to move secondary objects, cycle weapons, reload, or just scroll a webpage to the right or left. Another handy feature that did not need to be included but was included anyway.
