What do we have on the block today. It is Datel's MAX Power Battery for the Sony PSP. As we all know, the battery life of the Sony PSP has been one of the most hotly debated issues of the console. Well, we have put the battery life definitively to rest with this review, not to mention providing a cheaper solution than purchasing Sony's 50-60 dollar extra battery pack.
To begin, both batteries were charged to full capacity, then left on AC power overnight to ensure a complete charge. The PSP units were then powered on with no game in the UMD slot, and the timers were started. We then proceeded to load up Ridge Racers on both units, and raced consistently until there was not enough power left in the battery to keep the PSP running. Here are the results.

Interesting results to say the least. In constant play the original Sony battery performed a bit better. Now according to the Datel information , the Datel battery is not a lithium-ion type battery, but what they call a lithium-polymer type battery. According to the literature, lithium-polymer technology is longer lasting, light weight, and safer to use. Well they got 2 out of 3. Not a bad average. Now the Datel battery does not claim specifically to last longer than the PSP Sony battery, it is billed as a battery replacement for when the original battery is out of charge. Considering the Sony extra battery pack costs 50-60 dollars, and the Datel battery costs 30-40 dollars, you can see the potential gains of buying the Datel.

*NOTE: There was some comments made on the battery life being different because one person was loading more off the UMD than another etc. Well here is what really happened. We put in Ridge Racers and held down the gas and kept bouncing off the wall right by the starting gate, so the loading and usage was almost identical. Just to clear that up.

Other than the length, the PSP suffered no ill effects from the prolonged use of the Datel MAXPower battery, and there was no problem with installation - you simply pop it in and go. If you are looking for a cheaper alternative to the Sony extra battery pack, we definitely recommend the Datel MAX Power PSP battery. If you are looking for a battery that will last longer than the original Sony PSP battery, it seems you will have to wait a bit longer.
