Dynasty Warriors 6

Labeled With  dynasty warriors 6 xbox360 koei

I usually leave the graphics and sound comments until the later part of the review because I like to have something at least decent to say towards the end when some of the flaws of whatever game is being reviewed have been revealed. Unfortunately, sometimes that backfires, like now. It is not that the graphics and sound in Dynasty Warriors 6 are not well done, they certainly are, and always have been. The frame rate suffers, but when there are 500 and 600 AI controlled enemies on screen at one time, this is almost an accepted part of the game. The thing that makes the graphics and sound so bad is that it looks just like every other Dynasty Warriors game to date. This includes the ones from Xbox and PS2 as well. The animations, motions, and even the textures, seem to be ripped directly from the last generation of the franchise, and nothing has been added except some of the effects that the next-gen consoles get to use without processing expense (in other words, effects that do not require the game to be recoded to find CPU power to animate them). The clipping and pop-up issues are still present, which is unacceptable in 2008, and believe it or not, the Playstation 3 version, which requires you to install the game to the HDD, experiences even more slowdown than the Xbox360 version. The local PS3 multiplayer becomes almost unplayable at times. The same thing goes for the sound more or less, although there is one catchy tune that plays when the after-battle stats are being shown. It is an ancient-Asian sitar mixed with a techno background and I happened to like it very much. If anyone knows the name, email me please.

When Koei promised us an entire re-vamp and redesign of the Dynasty Warriors franchise with number 6 here, many of us actually took them at their word. Koei is not known for their PR flashyness or hype, so many of us thought there was a good chance that DW6 would be the new Dynasty experience that us hack and slash fans have been waiting for. Unfortunately, all we got was the same DW game we have been playing for years and years. What makes it even worse is the fact that the few additions that were included could have been parlayed into a complete overhaul. When you add two new modes of travel (climbing and swimming) and do not do anything with them but shove in an extra objective here and there, you might as well just come out and tell gamers that you are lazy programmers. Throw in no online co-op mode in this day and age, and you have a real missed opportunity. Especially now, when online co-op online play is so much in vogue that games are being designed from the ground up to take advantage of it, for Koei and Omega to simply overlook it is unacceptable, to put it lightly. Sure, a lot of the outrage gamers have expressed comes from disappointment that Koei did not deliver on its re-vamp promise. That being said, the bottom line is that DW6 is a solid addition to the Dynasty Warriors series, and fans of the gameplay and core dynamic will not be disappointed in the least. Dynasty Warriors 6 does not do anything to significantly advance the franchise though, so bear that in mind. Gamers who are looking for something more than the old DW experience, look elsewhere, and unless you are a die-hard fan of the series, rent this one for the weekend only, and make sure you have a buddy hanging around for that extra oomph.
