Battlefield 2: Modern Combat

Battlefield 2 on the Xbox360 has been criticized for being just another port of a current-gen game. The title is more or less the same as the Xbox version, with obvious graphical improvements. Is the title worth buying? Let’s find out.

Batttlefield 2 has been around for a while, the first version was released on the PC, and the Xbox version is one of the top games on live. Most purists still insist that the PC version is the ultimate incarnation of the game, but that does not mean the console versions are worthless – not by any means. If you own the Xbox version I cannot in good conscience suggest you buy the Xbox360 version, but if you have the money it is more than worth it.

The graphics in the game are the biggest improvement over the Xbox version. The game looks just as good as it would on a mid to high-end PC, and the best part about it is that the frame rate almost never drops. In fact, in order to get the frame rate to drop significantly, you have to do something like explode 8 blocks of C4 at once. The resulting explosion will produce graphical lag, but only for a short time. Graphics are a funny thing, if they are done right, in a game like Battlefield where the game is meant to represent real-world locations and items, then they become transparent and players do not notice them even if they are great. That is the case in BF2 on the Xbox360. The graphics are indeed fantastic but players hardly notice since the game is not the type of title where graphics are noticed. The Xbox360 version does have improved visuals over the Xbox version, but not enough to warrant purchasing the Xbox360 edition if you already own and play the Xbox title.

The sound in the game is done very well. The guns sound great when you fire them, not like the pea-shooters you find in a lot of FPS games. Explosions, which are frequent in a game like BF2, also sound fantastic. Loud as well, when you are playing at 2AM be careful to lower the volume, you may wake up the entire house if you are near a C4 detonation. The vehicles all have fantastic sound as well, the helicopters especially, when one is near you it even changes location in the 5.1 surround setup based on where you are facing in relation to the helo. It adds more to the game then most people realize, I think.

One of the great things about Battlefield2 is the sheer number of maps that EA has included. There are so many that even after two weeks of online play every night, there are maps that I still have only played once or twice. It is nice to see a game that has an abundant number of maps included for a change, it seems the trend lately is to include four or five only. Kudos, EA.
