XBOX Live Arcade is very much in its infancy, with only a smattering of titles, few of which have been worth plunking down your hard earned $10 for. Cloning Clyde from Ninjabee Studios (makers of Outpost Kaloki X) represents one of the first original platformers to make its way onto Live Arcade with great gameplay and quirky humor wrapped up in a shiny and attractive package.

Cloning Clyde plays a bit like Mario mixed with humor the likes of Earthworm Jim and transformations akin to Kid Chameleon. The blend of these elements results in a game that is both fun to play and puts a grin on your face the whole way through. As Clyde, you’ve been offered $20 to take part in a cloning experiment. Of course the machine used to clone you goes amuck, making several hundred copies which the cloning lab locks up throughout levels in the game. Your mission is to free yourself (literally) throughout the games 40+ levels by working as a group to solve puzzles and overtake your captures.

The game is very easy to pick up and play. You start any level as basic Clyde, who has a handy double jump and kung fu skills for taking out the security robots and rogue kung-fu chickens. Along the way, you come across machines that will blend your DNA with anything you place on its platform. This can result in some pretty crazy power-ups. Chickens, frogs, monkeys and even explosives can be blended with Clyde’s DNA to give him special abilities that are necessary to clear a level. As tight as the controls are, sometimes things can get a bit hairy, like on levels where you have to hop on the back of a sheep. Sheep have two-direction control and two variations on jump height, making it a hit or miss affair when you’re trying to get to a precarious platform.

Levels are cleared by destroying all of the levels security robots, which is made easier by using some of the power-ups. Clyde is equipped with kung-fu skills, so a bit of button mashing will take them out quite quickly. To spice it up, you can pick up segments of DNA littered throughout the levels to do special kung-fu attack, which makes taking out some of the robots in later levels easier.
