Virtua Fighter 5 is the fifth installment in Sega’s fighter series, and it comes from the fighter veterans at Sega who made such games as Fighting Vipers and the Fighters Megamix. The game also is one of the first titles which showcases the true potential of the PS3, graphic wise anyway. It will certainly turn a head or two, but will it keep those gamers captive after the initial hit? Let’s find out. Before we go on, there is something to note about the Virtua Fighter series. For those of you who do not know, the VF series is the only major fighting franchise which does not sell very well outside of Japan. Soul Calibur and Tekken are both top sellers when it comes to the US, but apparently the perfectionist timing and guard button use make US gamers wary of the Virtua Fighter series. This is a shame because the game is a serious piece of software. Yes, it is true it is the “hardcore alternative” of fighters, but that does not mean beginners can’t have fun. The truth about VF is that the game is what you make of it. Two beginners can have a blast playing for hours, and two grand champions can as well. That is the beauty of the game and hopefully this fifth installment will reveal this to US gamers. As I said, the graphics in the game are ridiculously eye-catching. They are, by far, some of the best looking PS3 animations and graphics that are available to date. That is not saying too much, I know, but I believe the game will stand the test of time in the graphics department. The character models are detailed and move extremely realistically, and the arenas, while being very small at times, are vibrant and interesting. Kudos to AM2 on the coding. Something to note here folks, while the box claims the game supports higher than 720p, I could not get the game to output in any higher resolution, no matter what I tried (HDMI, Component, two different TVs). What is up, I am not entirely sure. The main selling point of the VF series is the extreme focus on character balance. Unlike the other 3D fighters, you have a decent chance to win a match with any character you pick in VF5. This means that any character that has a fighting style that appeals to you can be your prime fighter. This also means that 9 times out of 10, even a decent player may have a hard time pulverizing a beginner when solely based on fighter choice. All things considered, this is why the game is probably the 3D fighter of choice for hardcore Japan players. |
