Mass Effect

Labeled With  mass effect xbox360 bioware

It may be a bit late, but you know what they say. Better late than never. With the time it took to actually finish the game, and the whole Holiday season, and me being pretty much the sole reviewer here, well, you get the idea. Mass Effect is the latest Magnum Opus RPG from Bioware, the company responsible for such games as Jade Empire and Knights of the Old Republic. Big shoes to fill, for sure, and now that the developer is owned by the Evil Association (EA), Mass Effect may be the last truly good RPG that Bioware produces. Let’s hope not though.

Bioware has always been a fan of the Xbox, which began when it released Knights of the Old Republic exclusively for the MS console. It filled a sorely empty niche on the big black brick, and with the release of both Jade Empire and KotOR 2, it cemented Bioware as a major player in the non-traditional RPG world. Mass Effect continues this legacy with a compelling storyline, great action, and fantastic gameplay. In fact, the game is designed to be played through more than once, and surprisingly, you may actually want to do so.

You begin the game with a pretty standard character creation sequence. You play Commander Shepard, which can be a man or a woman, with a variety of inherent talents and specialties. Being the hotpot of excitement that I am, I used the default character. It is interesting to note that if you choose a woman as your main character, there is a chance that you will get some woman-on-woman action later in the game. In fact, it caused a bit of a stir in Korea, which had the game banned for a bit because of it.

The character classes you can choose from range from Engineer, to soldier to Biotic User (the game’s mage class). My recommendation to you is to stick with the simple soldier class the first time around, it will make things a lot easier for you in the long run. Based on the class you pick, you will have access to certain armors and skills – you know, the standard action RPG setup.
