PSP 2 Finished & UMD Drive Removed? > |
2009/02/25 12:39:49: Posted by DM | |
This is certainly rumor mill fodder for now. Over at the Twitter page of Dave Perry, the outspoken Shiny Entertainment boss, Sony has just finished the PSP 2. On top of that, he states that he has been told that the UMD drive has been removed. How else is Sony planning to sell retail games, we wonder? They cannot all be download... can they? Stay tuned.

They can sell games at retail on memory stick. A 2GB memory stick pro duo retails for around $20, and that holds more data than a dual layer UMD. By the time the PSP2 ships, the cost for 2GB cards will probably be half what they are now at the rate flash memory prices are falling. If they're smart, they'd ditch memory stick altogether and use SD cards which sell for well under $10 for 2GB. For smaller games that only needed a single layer UMD or even less, they could use 1GB or 512MB SD cards which probably cost less than UMD discs. Best part is, people could reuse those SD cards for downloads, media or for their digital camera, etc.

@Madgunde,I highly doubt Sony will stop investing in their own MS Pro duo cards. especially since anything with "sony" on it most likely supports it from laptops/comps to consoles, cameras, and even their Sony Ericsson cell phones!
so your last statement beginning with "best part" pretty much works with the SD card or MS Pro duo, seeing that they are pretty much the same thing just shaped differently...

@incoming00I agree Sony won't do it, because they're too stubborn, and it's too bad, because not only would it mean higher profits for game publishers (including Sony) from lower cost of product, but it would make the PSP more attractive to people who dislike investing in proprietary memory card standards that don't work with their other devices. Lets face it, far more devices support SD cards than memory stick, and people prefer SD card because a) it's much less expensive and b) much more widely supported. If Sony is serious about digging themselves out of the doldrums, they need to stop letting one division force decisions on another that hinder their success.
