God Of War III Not Locked At 60fps & Has 'No Physics' > |
2009/03/26 16:37:50: Posted by DM | |
This seems a bit unbelievable, and before you start warming up the Sony Defense Force macros, these are the SCE developer's words, not ours. Jim Tilander and Vassily Fillipov from SCE Santa Monica, who presented a speech on the tech of the upcoming game, had some surprising revelations to share about GoW3. First of all, they revealed that while the game never drops below 30fps, it is not locked at a steady 60fps. They even admitted the game will "likely drop below that" during intense scenes. When asked a question about cloth physics, Tilander revealed that God Of War II "doesn't actually do any physics processing." In fact, he then said that God of War III "doesn't have any physics." What in the heck?

I fail to see the problem here. A game doesn't need physics to be a great game. Sometimes a developer can achieve the style or look they want better using custom animation rules than physics. As to the frame rate, I'm not sure if someone at Sony or the developer at some point made any claims about frame rate, but if it stays within 30-60fps, it's going to look great. Motion pictures run at 24fps and ntsc television 30fps. Anything above that is really not accomplishing anything.

I bet Mr Kenny will have something to say about this matter...lol. You will both be proven wrong in some way very soon.

A) Why would they not have a physics engine?B) How can this game be made w/o a physics engine? C) What "substitutes" for physics in a game like this?

GoW II had no physics and look how great it came out. Y do u'll even care if GoW III has any phycis or not, once the game turns out great, i'll be satisfied!!

@ madgunde, nothing wrong with the frame rate, some just don't like the jarring look when it drops from 60-30. Should be smooth overall.@ DM you don't "need" physics, if this wasn't revealed, most probably wouldn't know.@ Victus,A) Not having physics allows processing cycles for other things.B) All hand keyed animation.C) There is no subsitute, all pre processed thus not calculated in real time.
