Sega has sent word that they are currently working on a Sonic game for PSP called Sonic Rivals. In the game, players can play as one of four classic Sonic heroes as they make their way through classic Sonic The Hedgehog style maps. Click read more for the full info & images.

SAN FRANCISCO & LONDON (May 3, 2006) - SEGA® of America, Inc. and SEGA® Europe Ltd. today announced the development of Sonic Rivals exclusively for the PSP™ (PlayStation®Portable) system. Sonic Rivals is a head-to-head competition between Sonic and his top rivals, where the gloves are off and winner takes all! Built from the ground-up, the engine allows gamers to rip through tracks in some high-spirited single player and wireless multiplayer action against friends as Sonic returns in a whole new racing-platformer with classic 2D gameplay in true 3D environments for gamers on the go.

What starts as a friendly competition between Sonic and Knuckles quickly intensifies as Shadow and other rivals jump into the action. Sonic Rivals allows gamers to utilize boost moves and power-ups to trip, shove, and vault over each other while hurtling towards the finish line at breakneck speeds. Players will negotiate wildly twisting 3D tracks while avoiding the insidious Dr. Eggman and his myriad of hazardous traps and contraptions.

"Sonic Rivals brings back the classic 2D platform gameplay that started it all, and douses it with vibrant three-dimensional environments," said Scott A. Steinberg, Vice President of Marketing, SEGA of America, Inc. "In this heated rivalry, gamers are tested to prove not only who's the fastest but who has the best head-to-head gameplay strategy."

In Sonic Rivals, gamers can play as one of four different characters from the Sonic Universe, each with separate fast and winding storylines. In addition, the extensive rewards system, which is based on collecting trading cards, allows players to customize their favorite characters. Connect via wireless to race against a friend, and put trading cards on the line for even more multiplayer challenges.

Debuting on the SEGA Genesis in 1991, Sonic The Hedgehog is one of the world's best-selling and most recognizable video game franchises and character. More than 44 million units later, the beloved blue hedgehog celebrates his 15th anniversary this year.

Sonic Rivals is slated for release in Fall 2006 and developed by the Vancouver-based studio of Backbone Entertainment, a division of Foundation 9 Entertainment. The reason why I did not want a DS Lite!

Because I had a hint that sonic would be on the PSP!

Thank GOD, this game will kick ass!

But hopefully its not like heroes, that was crap on the PS2, Sega needs to see the great potential of the power of the PSP, shit I love Sonic games! Just lookin at the screensgots gives me an orgasm! Hell Yeah, finally some DAM SPEED!

How a'bout a more grown up sonic for us gamers who played it as kids and are now like 16 or 18, we'd like to see a teen rated, or even mature rated sonic game, well maybe not mature, but that would kick ass, instead doing it in 3d all the dam time now it could be like cartoonish or anime style with attitude, full of animations, cartacter and backgrounds alike, and put some crazy dizzining SPEED into it, on PSP the posibilities are endless, way more than DS, or GBA, and why do 3d all the dam time! come on sega, we're basically begging you for some for retro and oldschool, I don't think it would be hard to create.

Actually, I'd like a Sonic Greatest hits for the PSP. It needs more games that are just pick up and play. I could play the classics over and over again.

Well anything is better than just UMD movies.

G-man...no. This is what the series needs. Snappy modern graphics, but old-style 2d gameplay with maybe some 3d mechanics now and then. Like a high-speed Klonoa.

Yeah, guess we're right but then they would be like coping what Capom did with mega man maverick hunter x, which might make them look like copycats, but it's worth a try I guess, but think about it, all thier 3d games have gotton horrible reviews, while the still 2d games on the GBA and DS are kicking ass. But PSP was made for 3d, so I'll go with it besides that might make it awesome, like shifting camera angles while still playing in a 2d motion would give it some style, but hopefully it doesn't copy heroes too much, I saw a screenshot with those flying enemys that look straigt out of heroes, and hopefully that doesn't mean we get a game with shitty graphics too, well as long as maybe they put in a casino level like heroes, that was awesome, and a final space level like the one on Sonic Advance 2, which I still play alot. looking forward to that DS Lite though, just for Sonic Rush, I'm a big fan. And Giman isn't really my real name.
