PRESS RELEASE

FOSTER CITY, Calif., March 5 /PRNewswire/ -- Sony Computer
Entertainment America (SCEA) today announced details of its presence at the
2007 Game Developers Conference (GDC), with Phil Harrison, president of
Worldwide Studios, Sony Computer Entertainment, delivering the opening
keynote speech. GDC is the world's largest conference dedicated to the
support and promotion of game development, running March 5-9, at the
Moscone Center in San Francisco, Calif.

Phil Harrison's keynote presentation, "Game 3.0: Developing and Creating for the 3rd Age of Videogames," will kick off the conference on March 7th, from 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. PST. The speech will focus on the key components of Game 3.0 -- community, user-generated content, collaboration and commerce -- all highlighted through live demonstrations of previously un-announced services and games for PLAYSTATION(R)3 (PS3(TM)).

"This is a very exciting time to be part of the game development community. Advancements in technology combined with new consumer trends mean the industry has a great opportunity to create engaging new entertainment experiences for the world," said Phil Harrison, president of Worldwide Studios, Sony Computer Entertainment. "I believe we're at the threshold of a new era in creative game development that's destined to drive our industry growth through the next decade or more."

Following the keynote presentation, the SCEA booth will be a central focus at GDC as the company introduces new development tools and technologies designed specifically for PS3 and the PLAYSTATION(R)Network as well as PSP(R) (PlayStation(R)Portable) handheld entertainment system.

The SCEA booth -- Booth #410, West Hall -- will offer visitors a sneak-peek at:

-- Tuner for PS3 -- Developed by SN Systems, a subsidiary of Sony Computer Entertainment Inc., the Tuner is a profiling tool that enables developers to quickly highlight bottlenecks and conflicts in source code, helping them improve code performance. The Tuner is a software application, so there is no special hardware required, which enables developers to create high performance games with less guesswork.

-- Unreal(R) Engine 3 -- Epic's next-generation game engine technology targets a diverse set of genres from fighting games to shooters to Massive Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Games

-- High-Level Graphics Package -- PSSG (a PS3 optimized cross-platform graphics engine and tool-chain) production-ready extensible scene-graph framework that is written to take advantage of PS3 strengths

-- Pioneering profiling and analysis tools and physics technologies

-- Developing with Linux on PS3

-- Demonstration of downloadable titles from the PLAYSTATION Network, such as flOw, Blast Factor(TM) and Calling all Cars(TM)

Additionally, SCE developers, engineers, and other specialists will be hosting a variety of educational panels in an effort to support and encourage the creative innovation of developers and publishers:

Oh man, Sony is starting to build momentum.. Euro launch, slew of of PS3 games coming out, God of War 2, continued sales of PS2, BR beating out HD-DVD, PlayStation Home..

im really excited for Phil's speech. Ive always reguarded the PS3 as an unfinished product since the day i got it, and with what ive experienced with the PSP, theyll continue to refine it, and add ton of functionality.

The possibilities of Home sound endless. It seems it could be the answer to a lot of features the competators have, and adding new ones, in one swift hit.

I belive , even with the bad press , sony will manage to hit a similar of consoles sold of xbox 360 in less time than people tink.

I mean the fan base is montrous , and also there are realy nice exclusives( well atleast for some time) comming...the problem is the price , Parents will think carefully before taking the xbox360 option away.

Good luck sony,

These past two weeks have been massive for Sony, and GDC hasn't even come yet. The Sony snowball is beginnging to roll down the hill now and build unprecedented momentum IMO.
Written by Kenny K on 2007/03/05

this is all great news IMHO, it would seem that sony is dedicating this entire event towards improving their developer support.

as great as this is though, i think people are jumping through hoops a bit too soon. this will be HUGE when it comes to ps3 development and refinements and i couldnt be happier that sony is really showing a different side now. however i dont see how one even can cause "unprecedented momentum" with all things in sony land.

first of all most of fruity the loopy's post was nothing but a sony loving rant when half of what he listed had little to do with next gen gaming and next gen development.

to add, i am really excited and happy to see whats coming out of GDC, but i dont see sony fixing 2 years of mistakes in one event.

its a huge and great move but this doesnt secure their "victory" like some already seem to think.

"first of all most of fruity the loopy's post was nothing but a sony loving rant when half of what he listed had little to do with next gen gaming and next gen development."

first of all, I don't see why you felt it was needed to point that out. Secondly, as "sony loving" as his "rant" was, they are all facts so I don't really see what the problem is.

And I don't think "victory" will be achieved this year. Not until they bring out the big guns (MGS4, DMC4, FFXIII <-- a sure hit in Japan which will undoubtedly help them sell millions of PS3s, etc) and sales pick up.

Oh, and I'm as excited as the next Sony fanboy about GDC. Let's hope we'll see more games and more footage of games we've already seen (and love)!

I agree^^ love peace and happiness.lol

I don't understand why some people got to be such a joy-kill. So what it's not unprecedented momentum, momentum is so abstract that everyone feels differently.

Response to MAKAVELI:

It is nice of you to wish Sony luck, but in all honesty, there is no way the Playstation 3 is going to reach 10 million systems sold anytime soon, certainly not within one year of its life, like the Xbox 360 did.

Just look at the way the Xbox 360 has now sold 10,669,557 systems worldwide. Sony has only sold 1,541,503.

Even if the PS3 sells all 1 million units shipped to Europe, the total only rises to 2,541,503. When you consider that the people in North America and Japan didn't purchase 1 million systems, then why would the people in Europe??? Playstation 3 sells will continue to be disappointing in ALL parts of the world until the software improves, until online features improve, and until price reduces a LOT!!!

Sony might like to point out that the PS3 has shipped a total of 2 million systems faster than either the PS1 or the PS2, but the PS1 and the PS2 reached SALES of 2 million total systems faster than the PS3.

And the Shipped and Sold number of units to 3 million had already been reached by both the Xbox 360 and the Wii by this point in time. The Wii is currently doing well at its price of $249, and it has sold 4,873,345. If the Wii continues to sell 400,000 systems each month, then it will reach 10,000,000 systems sold during its first year, just like the Xbox 360...but the Playstation 3 does NOT have ANY chance of doing that!

We know that Sony has much more "generous" statistic figures of what a "Sale" actually is. As far as Sony is concerned, those Playstation 3 systems count as "Sales," because they were "Sold" to retailers...even though 439,000 of the shipped systems continue to sit on store shelves collecting dust all across North America and Japan.

People just are seeing any sort of value with a Blu-ray player...Sony has lowered the price of their Blu-ray player to $600 for release in just a couple months...and it hurts the Blu-ray and HD-DVD markets badly that services like HD-On-Demand and Xbox Live offer you the ability to watch high-definition movies and TV shows whenever you want...those are things that Blu-ray just doesn't offer.

Never, NOT ONCE, was the Playstation 3 EVER mentioned by anyone from Immersion or Sony in regard to the Rumble technology.

Phil Harrison said just 96 hours before Sony lost their final appeal in court that only third-party "Function-Controllers" dedicated to specific PS3 types of software, such as driving games would rumble when used with a steering wheel controller.

And the PS3 fanboys always complain that we never listen to Sony’s Phil Harrison, and they say we automatically call him a liar. Well, he made it clear that Sony's first-party controllers would not use Rumble technology, because it was "last gen."

And let's not forget about all the times Sony’s management said that the SixAxis controller couldn't work properly with Rumble technology...obviously they know about their own technology. I think we should believe them.

Hopefully, we will get this cleared up at the Game Developers Conferences...but, if nothing is announced, then that is because there was nothing at all to announced...which means that there won't be any sort of first-party Rumble technology from Sony.

MAKAVELI:

Did you take a look at this link that talks about the Playstation brand-name? Wow, when IGN said that the Playstation 3 brand-name was ruined, they were kidding. According to this song, it has been "killed."

h ttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R98qC0fd_1w

I mean, IGN wasn't kidding that the Playstation 3 had done a lot to damage the Playstation brand-name--they were pointing out that it took Sony a lot less time to destroy the PS3 brand-name than it did to build it...that is the way it is in life, though.

And I wonder why you still call yourself the "unbiased" tech prof. I don't recall Microsoft ever saying that they sold 10mil of Xbox360s within a year. They did make a big fuss over 10mil consoles SHIPPED though. But I guess, being as unbiased as you are, shipped=sold.

Please, the next time you feel the urge to come to a PS3 topic and troll, refrain yourself from doing so. It's unbecoming. Very.

You forgot to mention that HD-DVD (a pretty useless addon for the 360) doesn't offer downloadable contents either, or the fact that these downloadable contents are NOT free. Anything else you left out?
Written by Kenny K on 2007/03/06

go figure some people get all defensive over a simple reality check.

i dont think "sony fanboys" should be the only people excited over GDC, i think all gamers should.

also if you could please show me where the Playstation Home is "fact" yet. thats fine to list off-topic fanboy loving "facts" but what was the point? this would be no different then me just going on a rant about how much i love sega <- it would serve no purpose.

Also i have yet to understand how 3 titles could win ANY console war. they will help and sell millions, but if you really think it's so easy to be put back on top then your truly fooling yourself.

i never meant to be a joy-kill, and i did and still do think this is great news. however it matters more for the development community and not the public's perception of the console (which matters most when it comes to sales). all of this is VERY interesting to a tech-head like me but means "jack" for the average gamer/consumer. so forgive me if i dont understand where all this momentum will be coming from.

IMHO it would be just as bad if i started claiming victory and talking about momentum when XNA was announced. but i didnt because im not so desperate to fool myself or celebrate over something a company should do anyways.
