2008/04/10 11:58:38: Posted by DM
DTS, the Dolby competitor in HD audio, has announced that along with the death of HD-DVD, its DTS-HD Master Audio technology is now available for the Playstation 3. DTS-HD Master Audio is capable of delivering audio that is bit-for-bit identical to the studio master at super high variable bit rates (up to 24.5 Mbps on Blu-ray™ Discs). The April 15th firmware upgrade will include the technology upgrade. Great news for audiophiles!

PRESS RELEASE

DTS, Inc. (NASDAQ: DTSI) a digital audio technology company dedicated to delivering the ultimate entertainment experience, has announced that its DTS-HD Master Audio™ technology is now available for the PLAYSTATION®3 (PS3™) computer entertainment system. DTS-HD Master Audio is capable of delivering audio that is bit-for-bit identical to the studio master at super high variable bit rates (up to 24.5 Mbps on Blu-ray™ Discs). This bit stream is so fast and the transfer rate so high that it can deliver 7.1 audio channel, 96k/24-bit sound identical to the original studio master. DTS’ single-bit-stream codec design enables supremely efficient content programming and consumer playback. The new PS3 with DTS-HD Master Audio will be available by simply downloading the upcoming firmware upgrade on April 15th, 2008.

“We are extremely pleased that Sony Computer Entertainment (SCE) is adding the full spectrum premium DTS-HD Master Audio codec into the PS3 so that more than 10 million owners of one of the best selling computer entertainment systems can have the best sounding, most efficient and flexible audio technology available system as well,” said Brian Towne, Senior Vice President and General Manager, Consumer Division at DTS. “DTS-HD Master Audio is fast becoming the must-have feature for high definition entertainment enthusiasts.”

"PS3 was designed to enable delivery of new and improved technologies like DTS-HD Master Audio," said Teiji Yutaka, Senior Vice President, Software Platform Development, SCE. "So we are delighted to be able to offer this capability to PS3 users."

The Ps3 is probably the best machine you can get in terms of "bang for the buck".

Im actualy looking forward to buy one when the MGS4 Pack comes out.

The sound quality out of my PS3 is stunning, I didn't think that uncompressed audio from a bluray would be much of an improvement over a DVD, but it is with the right set up. To hear the difference you need to have a receiver with HDMI and a 7.1 system truely amazing, not even digital optical cables can handle this level of audio.

but u know what piss me of the most, the fact that i feel like giving away my ps3 40 gig for 80 gig, even though i dont care much, but just hate the fact that i have to stick with black and all that stuffs

im gonna return since its 30 days, and then get again and then do it again till MGS4 comes out,

hahahahahah !!!

and i can even get the grey version oooooooh yea, smart move I am...

The Limey makes some interesting points, though. I would like to expand on some of them.

First, if you want the best sound possible, a Digital Coax cable made of 24k Gold is necessary. The charts don't like when they say that Digital Coax is better than Digital Optical, and HDMI is basically equal to Digital Optical in quality. Hopefully, you live in an area where there isn't a lot of electrical noise, because if you do, then you can literally hear it when the volume is turned up high.

In order to hear any of this, you need an Audio/Video Receiver that has a THD (Total Harmonic Distortion) of less than 0.07.

Please understand, lower is better with Total Harmonic Distortion. When you go and see an Audio/Video Receiver at a store that has 0.7 THD, that is TERRIBLE sound! Comparing 0.7 THD to 0.07 is like comparing Night to Day!

Generally speaking, the two supreme manufacturers of high-end A/V receivers are Denon and Onkyo. Dollar-for-dollar, there is no question that Yamaha makes the best product; they usually have an A/V Receiver with a THD that is 0.04, yet can output 120w per channel x 7 for about $800 or less, and that costs a lot more with other manufacturers.

Speakers are really important, too, and they are by far the most overpriced electronic item. I recommend staying away from Bose and Polk Audio, because they used "Fixed Pricing" that never goes on sale, and is infinitely over-priced, especially for two-way speakers.

JBL used to make a speaker called the Studio series; they were three-way speakers with 100% Titanium Tweeters, and they went all the way down to 35hz! The manufacturers suggested retail price was $1,000 for two of them, but you could often negotiate those prices down if you bought everything as part of a package. Now, it is tough to find stuff that good for that price.

Even the speaker wire you use plays a role in the sound quality. You could have the best speakers and A/V Receiver in the world, but if you buy cheap speaker wire that doesn't work properly with your speakers, then you will understand why people say "a chain is only as strong as its weakest link."

Krogan - from my understand digital co ax or optical is not the same as HDMI and can't handle the volume of data that is required for uncompressed audio.

Limey your wasting your time... with him belive me...

HDMI is supposed to be the best quality on the market right now, according to him its not !
