Wii Gamers Are Actually Hardcore, Says Nintendo >
2008/05/22 10:46:33: Posted by DM
Nintendo of America's Cammie Dunaway has stated that 79% of Wii gamers are male, the majority are over 18 with an income of $50k USD or more, and over half play for more than five hours a week. This apparently translates into those players being "hardcore" gamers. Apart from the people who actually make the purchase, around 45 percent of the other household members who play Wii are female, said Dunaway, with 38 percent being 25 or older. She noted that 65 percent of these gamers play at least two hours a week, but only 32 percent play five or more hours a week.

All of suddent they are hardcore gamers ? What happen to Casual Gamers ... ?

I think they are watching their back as soon as MS has stated, that they are also focusing on casual gamers...

But I swear I doubt Nintendo wii gamers are hardcore gamers because most of them dont even play much... Comparing it to X360 and PS3,

Infact they are very poor in selling third party games... So that wouldn't make sense at all

I can't tell you how much sleep I have been losing over this. Thank God we finally have answers.

Are these people serious? Have we stooped so low in this medium that we now have to have official press releases to determine was is a hardcore gamer and what is a casual gamer? Why the hell do people even care?

This drives me insane. Last week, I played maybe 10 hours of GTA4. This week i have played about 10 hours of FFCC: My Life as A King on the Wii. So last week i was a hardcore xbox gamer, this week i am a hardcore wii gamer. Or is 10 hours a week not enough. I obviously have more research to do before i can establish myself in the categories under things that don't matter at all and that no one should waste their time caring about.

Please take me back to the days where I was just a "gamer" for playing ET for hours trying to figure out what was going on, and my father was a "gamer" because he played Duck Hunt once or twice a friggin month.

Hand Banana: Amen. I have a friend that bought a Wii 3 motnhs ago because he is married now and just had his first child a little over a year ago. He likes to play games, doesnt care about graphics. He has never had as much fun with videogames as he has had with the Wii. They called me last Firday afeter the Lakers game drunk as hell talking about how much fun MarioKart is using the steering wheel attachment. I don't consider him any less of a gamer than I am just because he doesnt have a 360 or a PS3.

I mean I started with an Atari 2600. If you knwo what I am talkign about it was a black joystick with 1 red button. All the sprites were very blocky, I remember playing the 1 on 1 basketball game against my little brother and the damn ball was a square. I didnt care about how the game looked. It was fun.

I think I have been getting to caught up in these graphical comparisons and need to get back to the roots of what got me interested in videogames in teh first place. I mean I watch my kids play games on the 360, and they dont care about what it looks like, they just want to have a good time.

Are top notch graphics important??? Sure. But not as important is top notch gameplay. I mean I still play Warcraft III on my PC at least 3-4 times a week because the online team games are fun. That game is 6 years old now...

Anybody in here ever play Archon??? Man that is still my favorite game of all time on the Commodore 64. I downloaded an emulater and bought a PC gamepad just for that game.

Pimp, I didn't realize that there are at least 2 people on this site old enough to remember the Commodore 64 and it's wealth of great games, what emulator do you use?

As for the Wii, I'm still not sure if it is really Hardcore, not that it matters, but it seems far more aligned to playing with a bunch of friends after a few drinks at the bar, not sitting relaxing on the sofa waving the controller around for hours on end.

I started gaming on the Commodore 64 back in the day with games like Pirates, Bards Tale 1/2/3, Defender of the Crown, etc...etc. Anway...the Wii will always be considered the console for casual gamers no matter what nintendo says. It doesn't matter...the thing is selling like there is no tomorrow.

There is a mix of both hardcore and casual games present on the Wii - To label Wii players as one of those demographics is wrong since you can get any sort of gamer playing any console.
