Resistance 2 On 50gb Blu-Ray, Shipping In November >
2008/03/20 0:58:34: Posted by DM
In a new Gametrailers video segment, it was revealed that the Resistance sequel will fill a 50gb Blu-Ray disc. Good to hear, then again, the first game was on the long side as well. Leave it to Insomniac to give us our money's worth. It was also re-confirmed that the game will be shipping in November. Also great news.

there must be a serious need to justify the blue ray inclusion, so many games filling it up or trying to with low hours of gameplay

yet another game that is not possible on the inferior xbox 360

Any bets on how much data on the disk will not be used this time? How much was it last time, 20%? What a waste...

The only reason Sony/Insomniac left the unused data on the disk last time was to tout off the capacity of Blu-Ray. Had the unused data been removed, the game could have easily fit on a DVD9.

Gotta love Sony and their spin.

how can a pussycat call himself a tiger. dude, you aint got no bite. next time do some resaerch, these devs write the same data over and over again so that the disc is read really fast and improve load times, didnt know that, and well there is the CGI

blacktiger,

It is just typical xbot fanboyism. Completely irrational and void of a thought process. You should come on over to hxxp://www.flamingwars.com/forum/

I own arthur and pimpdaddy on a regular basis over there.

Xbox 360 is FAR SUPERIOR to the Playstation 3 in virtually every way -- including Data Compression.

I have given this example before, but I will do it again:

Here is a very basic comparison of "Why" the Blu-ray games end up using so much data, when they OBVIOUSLY would NEVER use that much data on the Xbox 360.

On the Xbox 360 a Texture would be classified simply as "A1" or "B7" when it is being programmed. File A1 might represent an entire very detailed Water Texture that is written ONLY ONCE on the DVD, but from that point on the developers simply need to type a two-character "A1" or "B7" to gain access to those longer files. That is VERY EFFICIENT, and it does NOT take up a lot of space on a disc. Plus, it makes life very easy for developers.

On the Playstation 3, life isn't easy, and Data Compression is NOT EFFICIENT.

On the Playstation 3, it isn't possible to have the sub-code written as "A1" or "B7" in a simple way that gives access to the main file.

On the Playstation 3 it is necessary to write THE ENTIRE ORIGINAL LONG VERSION OF THE FILE CODE, EVERY SINGLE TIME IT IS USED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

although i am a big fan of Resistance, i am more concered how its going to stand up against Gears 2, also coming out November...
Written by Krogan Battle Master Urdnot Wrex on 2008/03/20

Do you see how that can end up taking up a LOT of space for NO GOOD REASON!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Don't you think it would be better to simply type "A1" and gain access to the ONLY file with all those exclamations points. But on the Playstation 3, all those exlamation points essentially have to be written EVERY TIME...and that takes up a LOT of space.

Playstation 3 is a TERRIBLE programming environment, and THAT is the reason "Why," it is necessary to use up that much space...all because of inefficient hardware, and a terrible programming environment.

*

Also, if this game is going to use the 50GB discs, we can expect a LOT of defective discs! The 50GB discs have an incredibly high defect ratio. That is the whole reason why the Blu-ray standard for movies is 25GB in size, which was 20% inferior to the 30GB standard for HD-DVD discs.

*

If a simple First Person Shooter will require a 50GB disc, it kind of makes you wonder just how much of Metal Gear Solid 4 will be missing from the Playstation 3 version. Hideo Kojima of Konami publicly said the Playstation 3 had failed at providing enough space for Metal Gear Solid 4.

have you ever written code for the PS3 mr urdnot? because if you havent then almost everything you just said has no merrit and was pointless. you remind me of a lawyer. not everything that comes out your mouth is true, but it doesnt have to be as long as you make it sound true.

I have given this example before, but I will do it again:

NO DUMBASS, you will say it again everyday, since u got nothing else to do....

WETHER the programming is bad or good, the games still run on PS3,

So you and your friends can post at flaming wars and see where u end up !

Hideo Kojima of Konami publicly said the Playstation 3 had failed at providing enough space for Metal Gear Solid 4.

AND THATS WHERE XBOX 360 IS CROSSED OUT ON THE LIST

TO bhonest with you Im happy with BOX 360 butim not sure if they can survived next year since all games are getting higher capacity,

I know PC is...

Risistance 2 is coming jam packed with 2 full campaigns plus multi-player maps. It's coming with 1 single player and multiplayer campaign completly different from each other. And then there's the multi-player maps. No wonder it's 50 gigs.

Dudeman: When did you ever own me??? The only thing that ever got owned on FlamingWars was your mom.

I challenge any of you Sony Nutthuggers to show me how RFOM 2 fills up a 50GB disc. WTF is Insomnica doing??? Putting every single regions language on the disc???

How the f*ck does a 50GB disc get filled when nobody is even pushing DVD-9 to it's capacity yet???

Your right Dudeman this game isn't possible on the 360. Why??? Because Sony paid for exclusive rights dumba$$. Besides the 360 has plenty of fps

Like I have said before RFOM would get lost in the shuffle on the 360. Why do you think Sony started bundling RFOM and Motorstorm??? Because after the initial hype died down the games weren't selling jack sh!t.

Oh and before you guys respond. I'm not spinning sh!t. I saw when RFOM launched that somebody was able to go through the disc's contents and prove it could easily fit on a DVD-9 if you diad any sort of compression at all. The reason they don't compress the data is because the damn Blu-Ray drive is so f*cking slow.

Do you guys still seriously think that blu-Ray is needed for games??? Ask Nintendo, Microsoft, and PC game makers what they thing about that. Seems Sony is the only company that needs Blu-Ray. So they can sell movies. LMAO.

Typical blind Sony Sh!theads.....

Oh and if you guys really want to argue join FlamingWars. Heck go take a look at how bad Dudeman's mom got owned by me. He needs help. I can't believe you guys let him go in there alone.

Check it out. No holds barred. Only Black Pussy Cats stay out here where it's safe.

As lame as dudeman's Sony Fanboy blinders are, at least he grew some nutts and tried to debate. Where the rest of you laptop warriors at?????
Written by blacktiger on 2008/03/21

ahahaahha Dudeman is funny...

No wonder he's in flaming wars, where you can argue all you want and still get no point...

hhahaha so ghetto, and yet he's talking about ppl's mom like a kid, im guessing he doesn't have a mom yet...

Could that mean he has two father instead...?

Nobody knows
Written by arthur56k on 2008/03/21

dueman, everybody owns you on FW, what the hell are you talking about?
Written by Cryos on 2008/03/21

Krogan,

If you want to say that dev's need that much space for the PS3, because they don't compress, and the drive speed is slow, ok, I may buy that.

But PLEASE don't spread the fud about "file size naming conventions".

As someone that has taken NUMEROUS computer science courses, I can EASILY tell you that how a file is named, and refered to does NOT take up more space the longer the name is.

Also, the fact of the matter is that blu-ray is a storage medium, just like DVD, Cd's before that, all the way back to floppies. Because it is a storage medium, the files saved on it can be named whatever.

Need an example? K.

I can save WMAs, MP3s, JPEGs, PNGs, and whatever else I'd like on either blu-ray, DVD, CD, or floppy. I can even name them all the same thing on each medium. the only difference is how much SPACE is on each.

Now, what you say about file size being larger on PS3 could be correct because of the OS that it uses, and how it needs to interperate data (but I doubt it. compare file sizes of GH3 add-on content)

But that would be a trait inherent to the PS3, NOT THE BLU-RAY.

and if you need an example about how naming conventions don't add more to the file size, just do a simple test on your computer.

Take an MP3 named A1. Copy it and paste it to the desktop now with however long a name you'd like.

You'll notice, if you compare the file size of these two files, THERE IS NO DIFFERENCE IN FILESIZE.

Also, Krogan

While PS3 uses the programming language C for their game development, Microsoft uses it's proprietary C#.

C# is mainly an O-O programming language, based off of C++, and has an emphasis on simplicity.

-meanwhile-

C is a procedural program, that is difficult to master, but is very flexible and powerful. It is the parent and inspiration for C++.

now, krogan, do you really think that the syntax, and saving formats of these two languages differs that much? If so, you truly ARE living in your own world.

and some links for your enjoyment (and Krogan, if you don't understand what they're saying in these links, then you REALLY have NO room to talk about how Sony and MS differ in their game making)

Finally i Understood Krogan after reading Cryos !!!

and finally we got some one here to shut him up in a logic ways, although we knew he;s very uneducated !

Response to Cryos and blacktiger:

blacktiger,

"'Finally' we got someone here to shut him up in logical ways."

I wasn't aware that you had been painstakingly waiting for such a long time...and it's about time that you acknowledged that all other people challenging me up to this point NEVER used logic or fact-based theories to debate me.

And by the way, I am only a short time away from being called "Dr." and I have graduated at the top of my college class each time. So, I am quite educated. There is simply no need for you to be mean to a person on this website.

*

Cryos,

When I made a reference to the "A1" or "B7" thing, I was OBVIOUSLY using that as an EXTREMELY SIMPLE form of comparison reference--a form that a computer programmer like you should immediately recognize as an extreme exxageration dedicated to making sure that EVERYONE (especially non-programmers) could understand things very clearly. I achieved that goal with the way I wrote my comment.

The Independent Playstation Magazine talked with developers and gave an excellent comparison of what it was like programming on the PS3 and the Xbox 360. My reference to "Names of Files" was simply an easy point of reference that anyone could understand. That's why I used so many exclamation marks. The message I was sending was, "It's easier to type 'A1' and suddenly gain access to 100 exclamation points, rather than being forced to type all of those exclamation points each time. That honestly does do a decent job of sending the message of how much more difficult the PS3 is to program for.

And Cryos, there is a HUGE difference between the way the Playstation 3 and Xbox 360 are programmed. PS3 is very similar to the Sega Saturn with the parallel processing. C languages work like CRAP on the Playstation 3 and the Sega Saturn. The bottom line is that anything using C languages in a fast-pace environment such as a videogame is NOT meant to be used in a parallel processing environment. On the Saturn, the developers constantly talked about how Assembly was they key to getting power out of the machine, and we hear all sorts of similar things from the developers of the Playstation 3 and their custom graphics engines that can supposedly save the day, but always find a way to fail miserably in terms of how difficult and time consuming they are to work with.

Here is the bottom line: Xbox 360 and PS3 are NOT on some sort of 1:1 efficiency level for data compression and transfer rate. If a First-Person Shooter Blu-ray disc used 27GB of data on the PS3 it would NOT take 3 DVD discs on the Xbox 360. In fact, it would only take 1 DVD disc for a FPS. That's because the data compression and overall programming environment is better than 3:1 on the Xbox 360.

Proof: Resistance 2 would obviously NEVER use FIVE discs on the Xbox 360. It wouldn't even require two discs. So, the data compression efficiency level is greater than 5:1 in favor of the Xbox 360.

And by the way, PimpDaddy is 100% correct. Resistance is a game series that would simply fall in the middle of Shooters on the Xbox 360, because Xbox 360 has games that are so much better. And the Xbox 360 has games in EVERY GENRE from Real-Time Strategy, to Music, to Puzzle, to RPG...EVERYTHING.

I'm just wondering about Metal Gear Solid 4. Hideo Kojima specifically said that even a 50GB Blu-ray disc would NOT be enough for Metal Gear Solid 4. When the Xbox 360 version is released, he can use as many DVDs as he wants. We already know that the Xbox 360 version will have missions not found in the Playstation 3 version. Perhaps space limitations of Blu-ray are the reason for that.

again, i don't care regardless...

And i'll laugh if Krogan just makes shit up, no wonder ppl dont response , because we have no idea what he's talking about, by we do with Cyros !
