	We finally got the official NPD numbers, and the top home hardware is *drumroll* Wii! The console sold 666,000 units in June. The Nintendo DS came in at 783,000, but that is a handheld. The Sony consoles, both Playstation 3 and PSP beat out the Xbox360, with a measly 219,000. Chances are Metal Gear Solid 4 did affect PS3 hardware sales more than previously thought. The only thing the 360 did not beat was the PS2 at 188,000, pretty good for a 10 year old console. Click read more for the official info. FACTS

(1) Next-Gen gave sales numbers that proved Metal Gear Solid 4 helped sell Playstation 3 systems, but only for less than one month. The big increase in sales that the Playstation 3 saw in Japan for the release of MGS4 actually lasted less than three weeks and did not carry over to the next month.

(2) Obviously, since MGS4 launched as an exclusive PS3 title, the sales of the Playstation 3 increased in North America during the month that MGS4 launched. There were also various other PS3 promotions during the month of June. Sony saved everything they had and worked with a lot of partners to focus on June, because that was when MGS4 had a chance to influence things.

(3) Grand Theft Auto 4 and Devil May Cry 4 surprised a lot of industry analysts, because they did not help sell systems. The reason for this is because those games no longer were exclusive to one platform or the other. In other words, they no longer had "system selling" potential.

(4) Final Fantasy 13 is now officially announced for the Xbox 360. Although this announcement does not hurt the Playstation 3 library, it definitely hurts the marketability of the Playstation 3 console. The reason why is because Final Fantasy 13 is yet another exclusive game that was lost on the Playstation 3. Final Fantasy 13 was a game that had the potential to sell systems, similar to MGS4. Now, Final Fantasy 13 will end up like Grand Theft Auto 4, because it is on both systems.

(5) Final Fantasy 13 is DEFINITELY being 100% optimized for BOTH hardware platforms! In the most recent interview, Square Enix SPECIFICALLY made that clear! The game is in development for both platforms right now, being handled by two different teams. The Xbox 360 version may be a "port" of the storyline, but the graphics, load times, ect... will be optimized for each console.

In other words, the PS3 version will likely be optimized for the Blu-ray disc, so that it only appears on one disc. However, people will still need to put up with all of the annoying and very time-consuming "Installs" of 5 minutes, 4 minutes, 3 minutes, 2 minutes, and 1 minute throughout the game that we saw on Metal Gear Solid 4.

The Xbox 360 version will likely be optimized to make use of the superior textures that the Xbox 360 has access to. The Xbox 360 version will also likely be optimized to take advantage of the Data Transfer Rate of the Xbox 360 that is nearly TWICE as fast as the Playstation 3 (16MB vs 9MB).

This means the Xbox 360 version may ship on more than disc, which will need to be changed every 20-30 hours, but the Xbox 360 version will NOT include any of the annoying "Installs" that appear in the Playstation 3 version.

(6) Also, Major Nelson has announced that Xbox 360 games will soon have the ability to be downloaded to the Xbox 360 hard drive while you are playing them! This means that Final Fantasy 13 could be placed on the hard drive, and as long as one of the discs remains in the tray (so that the console knows you are the owner) you will be able to play the game WITHOUT the annoying "Installs" and WITHOUT swapping discs--not that swapping discs every 20-30 hours is a problem, since it only takes 30 seconds.

Replace 'FACTS' with 'SPIN'. Sony just destroyed MS...stop crying.

blacktiger is a blind lemming PS3 fanboy...for "him" the Microsoft E3 show definitely was "crappy," because Microsoft literally PUBLICLY said "The Xbox 360 will outsell the Playstation 3 worldwide."

Now that Final Fantasy 13 is coming to the Xbox 360, that is a 100% safe thing to say. It must have been "crappy" for blacktiger to hear that.

So, although some polls show that 93% of people said Microsoft had the best E3 show, you need to remember that from the point of view of a biased PS3 lemming, the Microsoft show hurt very bad.

Shinji Hashimoto: No, the development of a 360 version won't necessarily affect the PS3 version, purely because the PS3 game will be completed first. That's been in development for some time and is still on schedule. And, really, since we haven't ever announced any sort of release date...then it couldn't really be "delayed," right?

and also your making is seem as if FFXIII is going to be around 90+ hours. changing discs every 20-30 hours?! i remember changing to disc 2 of FFVII after about 18-20 hours, and then to disc 3 after about 5 hours, then beating the game within 1 hour. FFX also only took about 20-25 hours to beat.

First, the President of Square Enix specifically said countless times that the Xbox 360 version of Final Fantasy 13 is CURRENTLY being developed! He even said that when he was on the stage at the Microsoft press conference.

Here is confirmation from IGN that there are TWO development teams.

“Separate teams are working on the two versions and both are moving along on schedule. There shouldn't be a delay in any releases.”

The thing you NEED to realize is that although the game is being designed “first” for the Playstation 3, since it is the lead platform, the “port” to the Xbox 360 is ALREADY happening! The “port” does NOT need to wait until the PS3 version is already released in Japan. In reality, the instant a part of the PS3 version is finished, the “port” to the Xbox 360 starts being developed.

The fact is, Shane Kim of Microsoft confirmed that development for the Xbox 360 version of FF13 has been happening for a long time! He said it was difficult keeping it a secret! The reason development AND OPTIMIZATION for the Xbox 360 could happen was because the PS3 version of FF13 had been in development for a long time. It’s the EXACT same thing that happened with Devil May Cry 4!

Now that the sales war is over, it has taken a lot of stress off a lot of us. The comments aren't as heated as they used to be.

We now know one thing for sure:

* The Playstation 3 will REMAIN a very DISTANT third-place in terms of worldwide sales this generation.

As far as the Wii and Xbox 360 go, a lot of it still depends on pricing. There are a lot of cards left to be dealt.

* If prices remain the same, the Wii will continue to outsell the Xbox 360 worldwide.

* But if Microsoft can get the Arcade version of the Xbox 360 to $199, there is an excellent chance the Xbox 360 will dominate the holiday season. Even if Nintendo was being outsold by a $199 Xbox 360, it may not motivate Nintendo to lower the price of the Wii, since the two are not direct competitors.

Remember, during the holiday of 2007, the Xbox 360 actually outsold the Wii. September 2007 also saw the Xbox 360 outsell the Wii when Halo 3 was released.

So, the Arcade system, at a low price, could play a BIG role in the future between the Wii vs the Xbox 360.

"trumps" may be the correct word to use, but the environment in which those "trumps" occurred was one that was expected.

For example, if you were in a card game, think of Sony as a poor player who was allowing his cards to be shown. Everybody knew when MGS4 was being released, and everybody expected a sales increase when MGS4 was released. Even the Japanese 360 experiences sales surges like that when exclusive games are released. The PS3 and Xbox 360 are both doing so bad in Japan that there have been times when sales surges like that cause the Xbox 360 to outsell the PS3 for the month.



I agree with you that it will be interesting to see what two things have done for the Xbox 360:

* The fact that the 20GB model is now only $299.

* Final Fantasy 13 is going to be released for the Xbox 360.

...And yes, blacktiger, Microsoft DID publicly announce that the Xbox 360 would outsell the Playstation 3 this generation! It happened ON STAGE, and you can see it for yourself on many websites!

Well, there is a little bit of a "spin" that can be put on it...the Xbox 360 didn't do anything at all to "combat" the launch of MGS4.

It was as if Microsoft allowed it to happen, because it was expected. That's the thing; it wasn't a combination of actions. It was the result of one game.

History has shown that multi-platform Final Fantasy 13 will have the same sort of effect as a multi-platform Grand Theft Auto 4...virtually none.

Clearly the exclusive games are what sell systems, and the PS3 lost a BIG exclusve with FF13.

God of War 3 doesn't have the potential to sell systems. The sales of the God of War series are PATHETIC compared to a series like MGS4, FF13, Halo 3, Call of Duty 4, or Gears of War. There were 120 million PS2 systems sold, and Sony only managed to sell such a small number of God of War games...that is ALMOST as bad as what Sony is doing with Killzone 2--the sequal to the game Killzone that received low review scores from reliable sources such as IGN and Gamespot.

Also, God of War 3 won't be seen until 2010...at the earliest!

What I'm really wondering is how many more freakin FF games are they going to put out?!?! I'll probably be in a retirement home and they'll still be continuing the story. "FFXXXIV, Rise of the Black Mages".
