The game features a variety of fighting scenarios from mid-air fireball exchanges, to land-based, eat-as-many-enemy-soldiers-as-you-can melees. The controls vary for each scenario, and there is even an entire level that is based on how stealthy you can be by staying out of the spotlights as you sneak into the enemy’s main power generation camp. As I said, the graphics in Lair are very impressive, but they are not the full-on FMV level graphics that we were promised back in 2005 and 2006. As you get up close to any of the bosses or enemy dragons, you will start to see the textures for what they really are – bland, watercolored, mishmashed shades of brown. Of course, you are not supposed to notice this when you are flying by at speed, but that is my job, after all. The environments and maps are also built on a massive scale. They have to be since the game is flight-based, you will be able to soar well above the mission area, so there needs to be a map in place, pretty much as far as the eye can see. This requires a ton of resources, but Factor 5 handles it well, and still manages to make the maps look great. Of course, the frame rate, as I said, tends to suffer more often than not, but it rarely gets to a level that makes the game unplayable. The sound and voice over work in the game is probably the best feature. All the wing flaps and fire breathing sound effects sound great, and when the cut scenes take place, the voice over work for Rohn and his cronies does sound believable. If you have a sub woofer hooked up, the wing flaps when you take off are even more impressive. I could go on about the controls in Lair like most other reviewers for another entire page, but what would be the point? Certainly Lair suffers from control problems. In fact, when you face the boss Sea Snake, you will likely pull all of your hair out, glue it back on, get the glue remover, pull it out again, and then break the SixAxis pad, before you finally stumble on the way to beat the damn thing. All I can tell you is keep jerking that SixAxis left or right, and do what the game says, when it says! The Sea Snake is certainly one of the worst points in Lair, and there are other points as well that suffer as well. Does this mean the game is really as bad as all that? No, and especially considering the lack of Playstation 3 titles out there, can we really afford to throw an entire game away as worthless? |
