Clive Barker's Jericho does certainly look like an FPS game. And while it may be a bit hard to spot, I am here to tell you that the game is actually a shooter on rails. Now I know some of you are not going to agree with this estimation, but the fact is the game is pretty much straight forward from beginning to end. This has no bearing on whether not the game is good, but I thought I would get that fact out before we went any further. Jericho represents that small sect of video games in which a name Hollywood personality attaches themselves to the project in order to make the title standout. Sometimes this works, and sometimes it does not -- in Jericho, it works, but just barely. In case the first paragraph did not tip you off, Jericho was penned and overseen by the legendary horror director Clive Barker. Hellraiser and other historic horror movies are Clive's calling card. Considering a man as legendary in the horror arena as Clive worked on this project, we should have been in store for one heck of a scary ride. Unfortunately, it did not quite work out that way with Jericho. Disturbing and freaky? Yes. Scary? Not really. First let me say that the story in Jericho is one of the most interesting and compelling yarns spun in recent video game memory. The subject matter is actually something that strikes a chord with this reviewer, so just humor me. You begin the game playing Captain Ross, the leader of a psychic savvy, magic using, special ops team, known as the Jericho squad. You begin the game in the middle of the desert in an ancient city of ruins that has apparently been kept secret for centuries. The small amount of people who have know about this city's potential for the destruction of all of civilization have kept it a secret throughout history. Sadly, an ex-member of the Jericho team has decided to use his knowledge to take over the city and opened a "rift." Rifts are a rip in time and space through which other times and dimensions can be reached. Ultimately, the goal of the evil doers is to use these rifts to reach a being called "The Firstborn" before they can be stopped. The Firstborn is a creature made by God, basically it was his first attempt at humanity. Unfortunately, the being was too powerful, too powerful for even God to destroy. Instead, the all mighty took The Firstborn, and locked him away in his own small reality called the box. Into that box is where team Jericho is headed, and it only gets more bizarre. I do not want to reveal any more of the story for fear of spoiling it completely, suffice it to say if you're not interested by now, you might as well give up on the story aspect of Jericho. |
