The sound effects in AC are also extremely impressive, almost more impressive than the graphics. If you are high up on a building, you will hear little but the blowing of the wind, and the occasional cry of a hawk. As you descend, the sounds of the ground below you will get louder and louder, just as in real life. This, unfortunately, is in stark contrast to the games voice over work. What makes it even worse, is that the weakest link in the voiceover acting is the main character himself -- Altair. He sounds the least like a Middle Eastern man of all the game characters. Another weak link in the voiceover acting is the fact that the AI controlled citizens seem to have only one phrase that they share depending on the type of citizen, be it beggar, salesman, or guard.

At this point we probably should tell it to the actual gameplay. I was not kidding earlier, when I described the game as "Prince of Persia on crack." As an assassin, it is not only your job to kill, but it is also your job to remain as inconspicuous as possible. This means that the rooftops will be your main mode of transportation. To this end, Altair is a top notch climber. Any building or structure you wish to scale is well within your reach 99 times out of 100. Once you finish of the game's version of a tutorial, which takes about two hours, you will begin in the first city, Damascus. When you finally make it past the guard gate and enter the city, you will realize how truly impressive this video game is. Each city has a poor, rich, and other district, and each district could be a city in and of itself in any other video game. Massive does not cover the scale of AC’s city sizes. Couple that with the fact that there are at least three of these giant cities in the game, and the scope truly astounds.

Each section of each city has an assassin’s Bureau, and each section has objectives that further the main storyline, and a slew of optional objectives that can be completed to help Altair do his work. Let’s run the types of objectives quickly.

First, there are citizens in every city who are being harassed and beat on by guards. You can always take on any of these roving gangs of soldiers and the citizens will spread your name among the downtrodden. This will end up making your job a bit easier, as regular citizens will be less likely to report you. Next, there are lookout spots all throughout the city sections (as well as the non-city areas) for you to scale. Once you get to the top of these structures, it will re-synchronize your world map, adding the new objectives you supposedly can see.

The objectives that further the main story include interrogation, where you beat information out of a certain person. Pick pocketing is where you free a citizen of his burden of information by stealing whatever paper he has in his pocket. This one is one of the tougher types, to be honest. It takes some getting used to. Finally, there is eavesdropping, where you sit on a bench and listen in to a nearby conversation to garner information regarding your target’s habits and haunts.
