The thing I hear most when Call Of Duty 2 comes up in conversation are things like “I own a PC, why would I buy the Xbox360 version” or “It would look better on the PC anyway.” Well my friends, there actually is merit to purchasing this title on the Xbox360, and this review will tell you why. Let’s get started. If you played the original Call Of Duty, you know well that the game excels at immersing you in the horror that was World War II. To say that the game will put you on sensory overload would be selling the title short. If you want to get as close as you can to what it might have been like in the trenches in 1942, this is for you. The graphics in the game are superb. The motion is fluid, and the animations are realistic. No rag doll physics here (or very little to be completely honest). For all of those who claim that the 360 looks the same as Xbox, I challenge you to throw a smoke grenade and tell me it doesn’t look absolutely beautiful. The smoke effect in this game is the crowning achievement in the opinion of this reviewer. It takes a while to build up once you toss the smoke bomb, but once it does, the smoke billows out to such a degree that you can not even see one foot in front of you. In fact I cannot count the number of time I must have passed an enemy at arms length without even knowing. I did notice one thing though, if the smoke is at its thickest, and the on screen action is frantic, the framerate will take a small hit. Most will not even notice, but I have a trained eye. The sound is this game is just as good as you would expect from a Call Of Duty game. The 5.1 Dolby surround is fantastic, you really feel like you are part of the action. The attention to detail for the voice acting also caught my ear(?). When you play as Russian, not only do the voices come complete with a Russian accent, but there are also women present, as the Russian army drafted women right along side men. It is these little touches that make a game great, and CoD2 has them in abundance. |
