Infinum Labs Phantom Lapboard Preview

The mouse that the Phantom Lapboard comes with is a 1200dpi laser unit. One thing to note here, those gamers among us who enjoy using more than three buttons while playing, note that you will not be using the mouse that comes with the Lapboard. The included mouse comes with only three buttons. Hopefully in the future Infinium will offer a true gaming mouse with a much higher dpi rating and 6 buttons. The good thing is though that you can use any wireless (or wired) mouse that you prefer with the lapboard mousing surface. Most of us serious PC gamers have a mouse preference anyway.

The Lapboard prototype I got to handle came with a great feature that I am sorry to say has been removed in the final version – a headphone jack. Greg Koler, the Infinium CEO told me that there may be plans in the future to read the headphone port, but it had to be removed due to weight concerns. On top of that the model I previewed had a USB port on the unit as well, which is certainly useful (maybe for one of those USB powered lamps during those late night marathon gaming sessions). Speaking of power, the Phantom Lapboard, surprisingly, does not feature rechargeable battery technology at all. Of course, you can always add your own rechargeable batteries from Radio Shack or the like, but the Lapboard takes 4 standard AA batteries (2 for the mouse and 2 for the Lapboard itself). These batteries last an astounding 12 days or so of straight play (according to what I was told), which is damn impressive.

The Phantom Lapboard will be released in time for the Holiday Season, and it will be available directly from Infinium Labs through their website, as well as a few other retailers that are yet to be determined. The pricing of the unit will be a modest $129.99 USD, which is on par with most of the top wireless keyboard combos. The unit is really shaping up to be a solid peripheral, and it is great to see Infinium actually bringing a product to market after years of being the butt of vaporware jokes. Greg Koler is determined to make Infinium a legitimate company, with the Lapboard and also their upcoming Phantom Game Download Service leading the way. I will have more information for you once the review samples go out, but I expect a great product if what I have seen holds true.
