New 360 Dash To Reduce The Size Of Game Installs? *Update* > |
2009/08/01 21:28:36: Posted by DM | |
According to GAf, CAG, and a few other sources, the new XBox360 dashboard beta version actually dereases the size of game installs on the HDD. NOw, if this is due to compression, or due to the fact that less files are installed, we are unsure at this point. Also you will have to delete the game and reinstall it to get the better size. As for if it runs at the same speed, we have yet to have a concrete answer on that. Here are some of the early numbers, though:Call of Duty 4 0.2gb smaller, Call of Duty: WAW 0.1gb smaller, Gears of War 2 0.4gb smaller, Halo 3 0.6gb smaller, Battlefield: BC 1.6gb smaller, SFIV 0.4gb smaller, and Left 4 Dead 1.3gb smaller.Rumor mill for now, but looks pretty solid. (Thanks, Hothitter)*Update: Lord Flux tells us this is confirmed, and any games installed before the update will have to be reinstalled after the update to work properly. At least, in the beta dashboard it works that way. No telling if it will be changed for retail or not. It seems to us though that this means it now uses compression. If it was just a matter of less files, then the old installs would be usable.

This is true. In fact, after you install the new update, any games you have installed will have to be deleted and re-installed. The old installations are incompatible.

I've had no such issues since downloading the new dashboard friday night. I've played Fable2 and Fallout3 with no issues and both have been installed on my hdd for a long time.

I had SFIV, MK vs DC, Burnout Paradise, Test Drive Unlimited, and MX vs ATV Untamed. All required me to reinstall and other people on my friends list have experienced this as well. It gives an error stating that the hard drive installation must be deleted and the game must be reinstalled.

That definitely sucks. I'm going to try some of my other games this week. So far i've just played the two mentioned above and a few xbla games.

I wish I would have tried playing these games before re-installing them. This is the first place I've read about the error. I know if you move the HDD to a different system you have to re-install it, but I never heard about the update requiring it as well. Either way it's cool, between the two games I have installed, I'm saving a GB of space.
