Ubisoft CEO Says Japan Retailers Reason For Low Import Sales >
2006/04/13 10:37:50: Posted by DM
The head of Ubisoft, Yves Guillemot, has placed the blame for slow import games sales at the feet of the Japanese retailers. He says that games from the West and Europe are labelled as "foreign" games, and are not seen as "normal." He claims that this fact alone makes Japanese gamers weary. Is there any truth to this? Tell us what you think.

yes, those ungrateful japs will not buy anything that is foreign they are trained to think anything made outside there country is inferior.

The only thing I don't like is the fact that we support their games like crazy and yet its practically impossible for a game from europe or the usa to do well over there. They don't seem to like our fps games or anything like a halo and yet the criticisms we get for countless fps titles the same can be said about their many rpgs, but yet still we support them if they are good.

Fact is we'll truly see in due time what the deal is if too human or viva pinata fails in japan (I expect them to make it to the japanese market at one point or another) or sakaguchi's games don't receive the monster support they deserve then there really is no hope for something like the 360 in japan.

i agree, these are some next gen. platforms if they don't like these games especially viva pinata than maybe it time to boycot all jap games that enter the us.

Hell I'd be up for a boycott because hell we support their games they least they could do is acknowledge the existence of some of the great titles that make their way over there from european or usa developers.

Not many will probably even follow that boycott, but I'm positive when a great next gen game comes outta the usa if it gets ignored in japan people will start taking notice that they flat out don't support our stuff and maybe we should do the same. Our games shouldn't be seen as foreign games they should be seen as ps2 games, xbox games, 360 games, ps3 games exactly what we considered kingdom hearts 1 and 2 all the final fantasy games, and what people will consider final fantasy XII when it arrives in the usa. We don't label them foreign or "japanese"

Hmm if Japan is so xenophobic why do they purchase iPods with such zeal? Why do they go to the theaters and watch Hollywood releases? The problem isn't with the titles, but poor localization. Remember the engrish translations in the NES days? Too many localized titles have slipshod translations into Japanese. For the Xbox many game developers were too lazy to even tranlate the game and they just released an English game to a Japanese speaking audience. Examples of this are seen in the Xbox World collection. Games that are localized well do sell well in Japan. Look at the Grand Theft Auto series, Capcom actually spent time and a lot of money to promote and localize the game. It ended up being a breakout hit in Japan. The Ratchet & Clank series is another good example Sony of Japan even touts Ratchet around in PR events.
