Xbox Sales To Slow Ahead Of PS3 And Wii Launch >
2006/08/26 13:19:33: Posted by vividbreeze
Before the release of Sony's PlayStation 3 and Nintendo's Wii, consumers will begin delaying console purchases to compare the competing products. Vnunet even goes further and claims that committed Xbox buyers are likely to delay purchases if they believe the price just might be to high (Sony), and might look towards the Wii because it's cheaper.

Written by Nemesis IX (371) on 2006/08/26

true they have a better chance than sony at the moment, this is only a guess doesn't meen 360 sales will slow especially with GOW coming out around the same time. also stop with the Sponsorship Notice.

wii diesent really have a chance... its a gamecube with a new controller... the masses will soon catch on

Wii is a failure...mark my words. It will do better than X360 because of japan but...

I think Sony will win the console war again based on the name and rep they made for them self (usa). I'm very interested in how good the Ps3 will be. I love my 360 and would love to have something equal or better (i hope better). I'm not overly impressed with the nintendo because it's pretty much a Gamecube with a new kind of controler. I know graphics are not everything but when you have 360/Ps3 to compare it to it's hard to get excited about. That said i will more than likely buy a Wii before Ps3 (go figure)just because i gotta try that controller. In the end it's all about the games. Mario should be crazy
Written by killallthewhitepeople (43) on 2006/08/26

Yeah, sony will sell millions with their overpriced george foreman grill! once the all fanboys blow there money on it, that thing will collect more dust than a nun's snatch. i don't see why the hell anyone would buy one of those damn things at that price unless they want a blu-ray player and have a TV that actually takes advantage of it. MGS 4 and FF13 are the only decent exclusive titles that have been announced and they are still nowhere near complete, and even those titles aren't guaranteed to be exclusive. I won't even think of buying that thing until I see God of War 3. I think i'll just pick up a wii instead.
Written by MAKAVELI on 2006/08/26

your justification seems quite cheap in comparasion of opta .(i miss u man , really)

so you think that wii is better than ps3?

funny , the idiots of this site are getting even more dumb everyday.
Written by Inferno22 (63) on 2006/08/26

Wii will do better then Gamecube but wont sell more then PS3 or XBOX360 in North America and I guarantee that. majority of gamers in North America want graphics, Online play and fps, military games.

Wii is the total opposite, it will have quirky games and similar graphics to gamecube with some enhancements.

The controller alone wont sell it to the masses, it will sell to the hardcore gamers and the Japanese though.
Written by killallthewhitepeople (43) on 2006/08/26

I didn't say shit about which one will do best and i don't care. I just don't see any reason to spend 600 bucks on a PS3 yet. I'm sure i'll end up getting one, but not until I see something that truly blows me away. All we're getting with the 360 and PS3 so far are prettier versions of games we've played before. Sure, the Wii is just like a gamecube 2.0, but at least it will offer something different as far as how we play games. I'd say the PS3 and 360 are like banging chicks in the same postition for ten years, maybe they get a little bit hotter, but it's still the same shit. The wii is like the reverse piledriver of gaming. Sure it might be a little uncomfertable at first, but at least it's something different.

"Sure, the Wii is just like a gamecube 2.0"by killa

even the dev tools seems kind of the same , with some upgrades. this is good news for development teams who used to work whit gamecube dev tools...will be kind of easy to port that in the closet zelda that was soposed to be released last year and now will see the light of the day in both gamecube and wii.

I still saying that nintendo is not really interesting in debut the most advaced machine in terms of graphics quality , the last gen games like res4 to gamecube seems to still satisfiying lots of gamers.

IStead of what they did whit n64 , this time they concentrate in put more fun in the games as they cold and the damm controler heps a lot with this.....

Personally, I belive that 360 will probably win due to sony's short comings, specifically taking too long to launch, and price bieng too high especially compared to 360. I have stated this before, but as much as I like sony I do belive that they have lost the war not due to anything 360 has done, but due to thier own shortcomings. Ps3 will do well no doubt, especially with the help of japan, and I could see this bieng a close war if sony can really start to fire all guns blazing, even win, but 360 will be quite cheaper as well as bieng able to offer a few other appealing exclusives.

I dont think sony will care too much however, the point of the ps3 is to push blu ray, and the money it would make of blu ray if it wins will be crazy. In other words, I could see 360 winning, but you would know who won the war when the xbox3/720 comes out with a blu ray format. None of this is a given, its just my prediction.

As for wii its really a hit or a miss, japan is on lock no doubt, but from sales of brain trainig and nintendo dogs outside of japan, you can see that nintendo have really fooled themselves into beliving they have this whole 'untapped market'. In essence the ds has fooled nintendo and its gonna take em a while to realise they were bieng short sighted. I predict that wii will come last.
Written by MAKAVELI on 2006/08/26

belive me that i would not be surprised if nintendo came the first to debut a system in the generation after ps3 vs x360 vs wii. this console seems realy like a gamecube with some upgrades. maybe they are really working in a full hd console , but they will wait some time .....till ther they give us this litlle aperetive. is just a possibility.

* aperitive and the gamecube upgraded is wii.
Written by - The G- on 2006/08/26

However as for this topic its definetly true that xbox360 sales are not only slipping, but people are actively waiting for ps3 and wii. Sales of 360 have dropped consistently every month, and will do so until ps3 is out. However even ms/the industry knew this would happen. In paticular Edge magazine interviewed peter moore and asked him did he get annoyed at sony tactics, which HE replied is "sony's tactic of stalling the market till thier machine launches, using brand power and *false* information" which he said ms knew, but all they could so is ship thier console, and drive the cost of 360 prices down, till it (ps3) launches and they could be in control of the market/what happenes.
Written by MAKAVELI on 2006/08/26

i have to ask something to sony.

1-please, dont make the same kind of shit delayings for the next "ps4".

2- dont subrestimate other consoles.

3- do not spend 3 years of development time thiking that a cpu could do a full job of a gpu.and afterwards put a gpu that was not full custumized for that console , im not saying that rsx will not be powerfull , but xenos was designed in just to years , full custumized with some thecnologys that dont even today are avaible to pc users , like unifider shaders.

4- dont lie too much about the console power , i know that they have to sell the product , but too many lies like games running at 120fps and the console being 2 times more powerfull than the rival one(x360). all this make the console lossing their credebility between fans and consumers.

5- dont forget to convince hideo kojima too cary on with MGS series, j/ks

i have too say that development of this console was suffered from a problem of the mans that run that gaming division of sony , the symptom was "substimate" others , and when koteragii and phill harison were blaffing lies about ps3 , ms was shut up working hard too bring AS soon as possible A competent hd console , that never had a ms representant liying so much about the console specs.
Written by - The G- on 2006/08/26

Makaveli its very true sony have 'underistimated' the other consoles, specifically the 360. They have brand power no doubt, but it can only go so far. Its another case of bieng 'blind' or short sighted. Sony seem to not see just how well 360 is doing, probably because of how badly its doing in japan, not seeing the 'bigger picture', just like nintendo did and do right now. Ms is not doing well in japan, but they arent sitting there feeling sorry for themselves, thier actively searching for brand new customers (360 in india and south ameriaca, etc) and are having an aggresive stance in europe and NA.

Right now its about just how good/big is the sony brand, and will consumer cacth on to blu ray as they wish, and just how will ms decisions affect consumer thinking. Its gonna be an intresting console war, and advertising can really be the thing that shows who is gonna win.
Written by MAKAVELI on 2006/08/26

and one more thing I love sony for the psx and ps2.

they will need good damm games running on that console to sell more than than the two previous machines and also gain some of the lost credibility of the brand.
Written by optaviusx on 2006/08/26

I've said it before I'll say it again the wii has no chance in hell of winning this generation. With games like battlefield bad company, assassin's creed, heavenly sword, halo 3, gears of war, lost odyssey, ff13, mgs4, forza 2, blue dragon, ninja gaiden 2, dmc 4, resident evil 5 the list goes on. The wii will not beat the 360 or the ps3.
Written by whYte420 (113) on 2006/08/26

360 is the obvious to buy this Christmas, which is going to have all the good 2nd gen games, which was clearly part of MS's strategy.
Written by Sky (360) on 2006/08/26

ive said it once and i will say it again.... in order for a console to win this generation...they gotta secure all 3 japan europe and usa.... and so far sony is the only one right now that can do that seamlessly
Written by - The G- on 2006/08/26

I agree with opta, just how is wii gonna win with such a lacklustre set of titles. Only games anyone would even consider getting on wii are nintendo ones, and well, the nintendo brand is not getting stronger.

Its really shows just how it is when ps3 fanboys and 360 fanboys argue over games like assasin's creed, Dragon quest and GTA4, and which version will be better on which console, or if they are even coming there, and the wii is NO WHERE to be seen, and yet, people belive its gonna win/do very well. This whole 'second console' idea can only work if people really want the titles, but people dont like mario and zelda like they use to do, they now have a 'kiddy' image.
Written by MAKAVELI on 2006/08/26

Wii is good for parents with children -10 that love mario and all that childish stuff...i guess they will save some bucks istead buying ps3.

the kids still the most loyal consumers of nintendo machines and games.
Written by - The G- on 2006/08/26

True, but i dont think its enuff to win the console war, and personally I dont see the hype for the controller

"The wii will not beat the 360 or the ps3." by opta

really. i didnt know , or better , nobody knew that! thanks for the great preview that you made, loll j/ks

----------------------------------------------------

anyway , nintendo knew already that without big guns like mgs4 and halo 3 etc,,, they will go in 3th in war reliying on japan sales and the big community of children that loves mario and their another mascotes,,

now they can count with the curious people about their remote and also the some casual players that still satisfied with last gen graphics and also dont give a damm about hd tech,

wii will be the first nintendo console that is not looking staight too gain a good reputation in raw power terms.

i mean , is not their big objective in being the most powerfull and dont even compete in the hd consoles sector.
Written by Smarty Pants (291) on 2006/08/26

The perfect console for parents, children, and causal gamers this holiday season is the PStwo. It will be at least 1/2 the price of the Wii with a game library that is just as large. PStwo also comes in a cute and small form factor and in different colours. Graphically, Wii will not be that much ahead of PS2; which is truly sad considering its age and good possibility that PS2 will outlive both GC and Wii combined (PSone production just stopped this year.

Now, if Sony drops the price to the 99 USD level (which they probably could given that they're giving one away for free on the PS3) it would place tremendous pressure on the Wii in trying to sell to non-Nintendo fanboys after the intial sales rush at launch.

you guys don't think pokemon with the wiimote won't be huge? i can't wait to come home after working a nice 12 hour shift and having to stand up to play my games. who the hell wants to play games to relax anyway? i'd much rather flail about like a retard than play Gears of War of Assassin's Creed. Who's with me?

Honestly, I'm getting a PS3. I already have a 360, and I'll try out the Wii before I buy it. I just love watching the fanboy wars. It's insane how people are so quick to defend "their" brand. It's not like these companies pay me to play their games.
Written by MAKAVELI on 2006/08/26

well , killa , gamming for me is a way of life. I dont have defend any brand , i defend their games (the good ones).all the systems have good games that make things difficult when you have to select a console.

For the first time wii is out of the "game" of the new technology in terms of raw power.

anyway if wii will be so similar to gamecube in terms of power why they just simply released that controler?

the awser is that nintendo learn how to recycle things and they really look forward to sell consoles in this form,

considerating that the console dont even put out 720p to the screnn , and will cost more than a xbox or ps2 is really triying too suck the money of the consumers just because the controler and virtua console , but gamers are different , in my case i always look to the future in terms of graphical capabilites , altrought this is not enought , gameplay is vital too.
Written by killallthewhitepeople (43) on 2006/08/26

Makaveli, I didn't aim it at you, or anyone else directly. I'm in the same boat you are, i just like to play good games, reguardless of what system they're on. I was just dicking before when i was making fun of the other consoles. Some people don't have the same motto of "play games, not systems" and they will defend whatever console they think is best until they are blue in the face, and they end up missing out on a ton of sweet games because of some bullshit loyalty they have to one system.
Written by Chris (30) on 2006/08/26

I don't think Nintendo cares if they win...just that they turn a profit and I'm sure they will.

You know... people said all this exact same stuff about the DS vs the PSP. The PSP is s vastly superior product in pretty much every way... but Sony is full of themselves and keep screwing it up. Nobody thought the DS would be able to outcompete the PSP, but it has, and the same thing may happen with WII.

Low price, fun games, simplicity - and you get new people in to games. X360 and PS3 are not going to attract new gamers due to the fact that they're making things hopelessly complicated to jump in to. WII's intuitive interface, much like the touch screen on the DS, will have more and more people jumping in. People with disposable income to spend on games, where the real money is.

BTW, I just bought an x360 premium pack the other day. I couldn't pass up the deal I got ($320usd). I'm off for the next 2 days, so I'm gonna spend some quality time getting acquainted wiht it.

Last generation, it was the same philosophy for Nintendo. President Yamauchi at the time was saying how people will buy a console for its software and not because its an entertainment hub, and development for the console will be really easy so lots of games can come out on time. But as you can see the Gamecube didn't really live up to that philosophy. So even if the Wii is cheap and has an innovative controller, doesn't mean it will be the next-gen winner. Really there is no clear winner next-gen, it could go either way. Microsoft did the smart thing and came out first with the 360, last generation they came out last yet still managed to beat the really cheap Nintendo Gamecube at the time so that means Sony could go the same way next generation. So you'll never know who will get the most sales and be the "king of the gaming industry." All I know is that im getting all 3 8)

MAKAVELI,

I couldn't have said it better myself; you did a GREAT job of listing reasons why the Playstation 3 has over promised and under delivered. I mean, seriously, MAKAVELI, the way you talked about how the Playstation 3 was not originally designed to use a GPU, but was forced to add one after they saw the Xbox 360 was NICE! And they way you talk about how Playstation 3 is still using non-unified shader technology, while the Xbox 360 is using the brand new Unified Shader technology that is still about 6 months away on the PC...SUPERB!!!! Nicely written article, MAKAVELI!!!

i'm a big Sony fan, and even I knew that the PSP had it's work cut out for them when entering the Nintendo dominated handheld market.

consider this: the PSP, to date, has sold roughly 12 million units. before the DS Lite launched, the fat DS ("phat DS" is just really, really stupid. why do people insist on spelling it that way? it's not cool. but i digress) sold about 14 million units. what i'm getting at is the PSP is holding it's own, and that if it wasn't for the release of the DS Lite (where DS fans everywhere just *had* to upgrade to the smaller, and better backlit version), the PSP would be catching up to the DS. i honestly think that is the case. of course, there were people who didn't own the original DS who got the Lite, but i think a large number of that original 14 million purchased the Lite.

also, the PSP has nowhere to go but up. we've seen it's dark times (which is generally the launch of most gaming platforms. the only exception seems to be the PS3, as it's launch is looking to be impressive, and the NES and SNES and Genesis). you also have to consider this, it takes at least 2 years to make a decent to awesome PS2 game. the PSP is, basically, a portable PS2 minus a little bit of horsepower. the system has been out for a year, but it's already showing signs that developers are getting used to the platform, and respecting it as it's own thing. this is being reflected in a lot of upcoming games, and games that have been released this year:

Daxter

Syphon Filter: Dark Mirror

Metal Gear Acid 2

Exit

Loco Roco

Pursuit Force (it's surprisingly fun for such a stupidly named game)

Tekken: Dark Ressurrection

Metal Gear Solid: Portable Ops

Lego Star Wars 2

Silent Hill: Origins

Tomb Raider: Legend

Whatever David Jaffe is cooking is bound to be enjoyable

Def Jam (got an 8.1 at ign)

Guitaroo Man (also got great reviews so far)

Valkyrie Profile: Lenneth

my point is that the PSP *does* have games, and a lot more than we think are really good. i own 7 PSP games and i still haven't beaten them yet. meaning that they're plenty enough to keep me busy until i get the numerous others i want.

the talk of the PSP being a "dead" platform is propagated by fanboys of other consoles and execs from competing companies. 12 million units sold is *not* a dead platform, especially pushing those numbers in it's first 16 months on the market. Sony has done well for itself regarding the PSP. just deal with it and enjoy whatever platform(s) you *do* like (though i don't expect much Sony love on *this* particular site).

Speaking on the PSP vs DS (seems thats what this has turned into) sure, Psp has sales that almost compare to DS... Sure sure, BUT how many people do you know that had bought the psp hoping for more and sold it. Now how many people bought the DS and still own it? Im in the boat. Psp promised and dident deliver. I still own my DS and love it.

i don't care what wins the war as long as great games keep and coming i'll buy any console, love my 360, ds and hate my psp, definitally will buy the Wii and not sure about getting the ps3 before christmas but i'm sure by next summer it will be the best seller, even if most games turn out crap. it has the scangbag, chav sales they'd love going around all common saying i've got a ps3 with there big rings and horrid chains.

i heard from the 3d teacher in college that the true sales of the psp is meant to be around 9 million.

A true gamer still plays good shit from the past, meaning even today in this generation they will try to find that, and lets be honest, Nintendo can put that much more than Microshit and Phony.

Hell I still play some classics on the psx more than my 360 such as Parasite eve and Xenogears, even busted a few Nes :>
Written by Unknown (174) on 2006/08/27

It is actually the number of the shipment to begin with that companies other than SCEI are announcing as the number of sales. It is clear if it thinks about the announcement time of the sale time and the number of sales. It is a trick of the word.
It is free, is foolish or a fundamentalist that thinks that there are 10 million from eight million stocks or more of the store if it thinks from 20.02 million numbers of the shipment of PSP. There is even no shipped necessity if there is a stock.
Written by Smarty Pants (291) on 2006/08/27

Given that PSP was at some points 2x as expensive as DS, the unit sales difference isnt that great. Also, DS sales got a boost due to the redesign, which came unsually soon into the product lifecycle (less than 2 years).

In the long run, Nintendo is going to have to live with another competitor in the handheld space; PSP isnt folding anytime soon. Nintendo has a significant majority with all their handhelds combined, but, it will never be the same monopoly it once was.

I have a PSP and i like DS though i dont posses one. I wouldnt like for the HAndheld market to stay a monopoly like it was before with nintendo. The same is happening with PS3 360 and Wii. In the end, we consumers are the one who win, stop the fanboyism!

The problem with the 360 sales is that they didnt have one MUST-BUY game (exclusive so dont count oblivion) since its launch so now everybody is waiting for Xmas to make a choice.

Written by killallthewhitepeople (43) on 2006/08/27

I have a DS and I love it. The only reason i bought a handheld is because I'm currently deployed in southwest Asia and it makes the time go by faster. I almost bought a PSP, but I just couldn't bring myself to spend that much money on a handheld that only has a few games I like.

Just by default, since there are already more Xbox 360 owners than that in Japan! This means that at the end of 2006, the Japanese high-definition next-generaton sales champion with be Microsoft!
