Nintendo Wii In Hi-Def! >
2007/02/16 21:31:12: Posted by vividbreeze
What amazing secrets one can get out of a drunken person, who also happens to be a Nintendo executive? The Inquirer is reporting the Nintendo Wii GPU has full hi-def capabilities even if they are not exposed. Take this as a grain of salt for now, but Nintendo is well known for keeping dirty secrets! Rumor mill for now since it is The Inquirer, but sounds plausible.

memory is one of the key elements for high def, seeing is how the graphics card is part of the acceleration family and thats a breeze.

No surprises there.

This isn't that much of a surprise. In terms of graphics and sound, the Wii is considerably more powerful than the PS2, and almost as powerful as the original Xbox.

The original Xbox had games like Soul Caliber 2 that ran in 720p, Dragon's Lair ran in 1080i, and all the EA Sports games were in 720p...all of those with true 5.1 sound.

Although the Wii can't do true 5.1 sound, it is cool that they are trying to get the games to run at a high-definition resolution. That is probably one of the things people complain about the most with the Wii; they say it doesn't look any different than the previous generation of games.

It sounds like Nintendo has been listening to those complaints, and they are doing their best to fix them. That is always an excellent thing for management to do.

I will be interested to listen to what Nintendo has to say about what sort of side-effects raising the resolution like that will have...it might mean using even fewer polygons...but in games like Mario Party and Mario Kart, those games don't need a lot of polygons anyways, so who cares. Seeing games like Wii sports in high-definition might be cool, because Wii obviously isn't a polygon powerhouse, but raising the resolution would make the existing polygons look quite a bit better, because 720p looks quite a bit better than 480p.

Nintendo iz Billionaires, if they wanted Wii to have better specs than 360 & PS3, they would and a $249.99 price tag, if possible...

there definitely not as rich as sony or Microsoft though.

Wii's -stronger- than the original Xbox which could show HD... nothing strange.

good , now nintendo can compete with xbox in high def.

*****************WII SPecs*************************

CPU: PowerPC based "Broadway" processor, clocked at 729 MHz, made with a 90 nm SOI CMOS process

GPU: ATI "Hollywood" GPU, clocked at 243 Mhz made with a 90 nm CMOS process

Memory:88 MB Total Memory 24 Mb "main" 1T-SRAM, 64 Mb "external" GDDR3 RAM

3 Mb GPU texture memory.

*****************Gamecube specs.**********************

cpu: Gekko at 485 MHz

Gpu: Flipper" at 162 MHz

Memory: 24 mbs main ram and 16mb video ram.

folks the wii can run at 720p.

IF THE XBOX WAS weaker in specs , and it was able to run at 720p and 1080i , then the wii can do it too.

Response to Tecno_Geek:

You did your homework this time, buddy...I'm impressed!

When you compare the Wii to the original Xbox, each is more powerful in certain areas. For example, the original Xbox could do true 5.1 digital sound, but the Wii couldn't. On the other hand, the Wii has more RAM, which helps out for graphics. The thing that makes it so the Wii has a harder time taking advantage of those specs for graphics is because it takes more processing power to work properly with the Wii-mote.

When I clicked on this link, it was actually kind of disturbing that this guy from Nintendo was actually indicating that the "HD" resolution would not be in the form of 720p or 1080i, but that it would be a type of "upconverted" 480p. I think that isn't quite as good as what we were led to believe when Gamers Reports said "full hi-def" capabilities. I was a little disappointed when I read that in the actual article.

its always better than playing in 480i , lolll

(without the component cable)

Dont hold you breath guys; the Wii was suppose to be region free, playback DVD, and have USB drive support.. and these were sober, official statements. What does that make this?

And the notion of Wii being more powerful than the xbox is bull. Have you seen FarCry for it? How is it that a port of an xbox console 2 years later looks worst? And, the last gen God of War 2 looks 100x better than anything on the next gen wii right now.

If Wii cant even match PS2 or xbox graphics, do you seriously think they can output anything higher than 480p?
Written by Tecno_Geek on 2007/02/17

OBVIOUSLY ,because that was a port!!! did you saw resident evil 0 and 4 to the gamecube? ps2 couldnt match because was specificaly designed for the gamecube.

Yes it can make more than 480p/

Smarty Pantz you are a retard. Of course God of War 2 looks really good, the developers figured out how to use the ps2 really well after awhile. Wii just released and the developers weren't focused on graphics because thats not what the Wii was meant to be. Just because the games out now don't look as great as other games doesn't mean thats the power of the system. Look everyone, hes a retard!
Written by NUTTSACK on 2007/02/17

Even if the Wii could output 720P graphics. Would these graphics look any good? My opinion says no. After doing research I still say no. Its the same thing as the 360 or the PS3 outputing games at 1080P. Although they are both able to, can either console do 1080P justice? No. Thats why the vast majority of games will be in 720P on those 2 consoles. If Nintendo were smart they would just optimize thier games to look thier best in 480P. I would just be happy if we saw Wii games that looked better than XBOX games at this point...

Why is this even a news item? OF COURSE the Wii GPU has the 'capability' to process HD res frames ... It would of course require a different setup. PC based graphics cards have operated at 'higher-than' HD resolutions for years and years, and lots of those GPU's were considerably weaker than Wii's.

Under different circumstances, the GPU inside the Wii would of course be able to process frames in HD ... but the Wii doesnt use it like that.

And Wii is more powerful than the original xbox, anyone who disagree's is a dumbass.

hmm pretty interesting if we can get a few games in hi def
