38% of Gamers Are Female, New Program Announced > |

According to Torrie Dorrell, the full-on gamer who is currently the Senior VP of Sony Online Entertainment, female gamers are slowly but surly making their mark in the industry. The real key that opened the female door was the surge of the MMO market. Girls found a game space online with the advent of the fantasy MMO, where they could play as girls and did not have to worry about what caliber bullet they were loading or what enemy to snipe. This past weekend at GDC, Dorrell announced the details of a program being run in conjunction with the Art Institutes. The program, the first of its kind, would give the winning female student currently enrolled at an Art Institute school $10,000 toward her tuition and a paid internship at one of SOE's development studios. Great news for the industry, may be we can get a breath of fresh air into a stagnant scene.38 percent of gamers are female, spending an average of 7.4 hours a week playing, according to the Entertainment Software Association. Studies and sales data have shown that women are more likely to play hand-held casual games, such as the Nintendo DS, along with social oriented games such as "The Sims," where women make up more than 55 percent of players.
