EA Founder Questions PSN HOME Goals >
2008/12/08 15:57:33: Posted by DM
Trip Hawkins, the founder of EA, has questioned the goals of Sony's PSN HOME service, which launches soon. He says that goign after the World of Warcraft or Second Life crowd is a mistake at this point. We tend to agree with him.

"My own personal opinion is: if Sony makes Home feel too much like a [World of] Warcraft environment, they're just never going to create the kind of audience size that you're going to see Nintendo and Microsoft create.

GR agrees everyting against PS3

I think Home is great after I played two days ago,

I can see how this Online community works...

BlackTiger: You agree with everything pro PS3. Whats the point??? You cry too damn much.

PS3 sucks...

a recent rumor indicates that Home is released on Dec 17th. i still dont see anything special about it yet, but then again i'm in a beta :p
Written by Nemesis IX on 2008/12/08

I don't really know the full purpose of HOME but i do like the idea of have a character avatar and place to see your achievements. kinda makes me think of PGR's garage.
Written by Sky on 2008/12/08

I just listened to the interview.. he not questioning home at all.. he knows what time it is.. home is not a MMO and theres no fee.. its just a free service to interact and kill time

Written by PimpDaddy on 2008/12/08

Sky: Really? I thought Home was going to kill XBL. Now it is a time killer. Whats next space?
Written by Sky on 2008/12/08

Pimp: Sony don't need home to kill XBL. it will kill itself and become free.. give MS 2 years
Written by B1ueBurneR on 2008/12/08

@Cloud Of BS, oh boy oh boy. PS3 Fantards are the worst are making predictions this Generation. PSN has been free for the last 2 years, and 300 updates later ... Gamers still prefer Xbox Live over it, so please explain to me clearly how is HOME going to make PSN so much better than it is, you know other than it been a time killer as "FagTiger" said.

B1: are you in the HOME beta? do you have a ps3?
Written by B1ueBurneR on 2008/12/08

I can see you're a NuvaRing User. I won't hold it against you though. and by the way whats ONLIEN?

@CBS, Being that I don't own a PS3, or been in the beta, that should make it easier for you to explain to me the above. and yes I've tried the PSN lately.. not much changed since June.
Written by Sky on 2008/12/08

Its not easier to explain.. its best to show.. it's like a math problem.. I can teach you formula's all day.. but if you don't try it yourself and get your hands on, you will never learn
Written by VaeVictus on 2008/12/08

Blacktiger, you can't "play" Home. #2, right now, I am in the beta and it's bare bones. It will allow PS3 users to do many of the same things XBL users can do 'WHILE WITHIN HOME'. It has similar features, but you have to be inside of it to take advantage of some. Much like PSN, HOME will not be a fully fleshed out service up front. It will take time. Good thing is, it's free. PSN took a while, but imo it's pretty awesome in it's current state considering the cost.

How anyone can get excited about home/xbl is beyond me.
Written by PimpDaddy on 2008/12/09

I will take Home/PSN/XBL over that gay Wii friend code shit. But since you dont have a PS3 or 360 tr1p1ea then I guess you wouldnt know what a decent online gaming service is all about.
Written by VaeVictus on 2008/12/09

How can anyone get excited about the sh*t for games the Wii has?

XBL/PSN helps develop a gaming community. XBL began the world of online gaming as we know it, and that is a good thing. I've met some pretty cool people b/c of XBL/PSN and enjoyed hours of gaming with them. I'll say it's something worth getting excited over.

Home will be a cool service if Sony sticks with it. I can see the direction they are taking and it won't simply be a place for people to hang out. It will take time.

Written by B1ueBurneR on 2008/12/09

Next thing you know.. we'll all be stuck into something similar to the matrix, or stuck to our seats without any reasons to move, while are eyes are planted to a screen in front of us,like the fat people in the movie Wall-E.
Written by poprocker on 2008/12/09

got my HOME invite today. I'll give it a whirl tonight and see what all the hubub is about.
Written by VaeVictus on 2008/12/09

Poprocker, don't go in with huge expectations...that's all I'll say, lol.
Written by madgunde on 2008/12/09

I think the quote is being misinterpreted a bit. He isn't implying that Home is in fact going after the Wow or Second Life crowds, he's just saying that if they are, it's a mistake. He admits he's not entirely sure what Sony's plan is.

I'd agree with him there about WoW, but not as much Second Life. I think Second Life has a lot of things that appeal to a wide audience, so Sony can make Home successful if they're smart about what features they choose to implement, but more importantly what they choose to leave out. What makes Second Life unfriendly is all the customization that is possible. First time I logged into Second Life, I was bombarded with stuff I didn't understand. I don't think that'll be something we'll have to worry about in Home.
Written by Xenos on 2008/12/09

The success of HOME will rely mostly on it's 2D interface as apposed to it's 3D world. The features of HOME will become more important to the average PS3 user rather than the pure esthetics of it. Having quick and efficient access to the features will play a larger role in this regard.

@ sky, don't ever expect LIVE to be free. I can't say I'm thrilled to say that, but with more than 8 million people paying for the service, it's past the point where it's even in consideration. If anything, Sony may start charging for PSN if HOME's ad revenue does not recoup the cost of running the service. Sony may just ride it out this gen and start charging for the service on the next gen system.

Besides, you guys STILL fail to understand why people pay for LIVE, I've explained it time and time again and yet ignorance always has to play it's role.

Wish I could draw you a pretty picture so that it may soak through for once, but LIVE members pay for the servers that MS provides, among other things. It's entirely different than Sony's methods where they require the 3rd party companies to provide said servers.

Who am I kidding though, to you sony fans, PSN is just as good as LIVE *rolls eyes*
Written by Xenos on 2008/12/09

just to clarify, every after the "@sky" was directed towards him, I don't wish to turn this into another pointless PSN vs LIVE or console bashing fagwar
Written by madgunde on 2008/12/09

@Xenos (wrt your comment about the 2D interface)

I agree and disagree. I don't think the 2D interface will be what makes Home 'successful' in that the 2D interface will mostly likely just be used for typical PSN gaming functions, so If people only use Home for those features, and stay in the 2D interface, then Home will be a failure. I think it's a given that people are going to use the PSN gaming features (provided they're supported by games), so to me, what is going to make or break Home as a success is the content they put in it and whether or not they can make it enticing to socialize in the 3D space. If success of Home is purely measured on how many people use the 2D interface for managing online games and standard PSN features, then I agree with you, but to me it would be a failure of Sony's vision for Home if that's all most people use.
Written by arthur56k on 2008/12/09

things are supposed to get easier, and the community setting is where live thus far has thrived, home has from what i have heard yet to reach those realms
Written by Xenos on 2008/12/09

What standard PSN features are we talking about? I thought the standard features that PSN needs were going to be introduced with the release of HOME, things like cross game invites and such.

Anyways, to speculate what will make HOME a success or failure would rely heavily on knowing Sony's goals for HOME. Of course those goals can be separated in two parts that are related: earned revenue through advertising and consumer use of HOME. So sony's goals can be seen, in theory, as a way to recoup costs of running PSN through advertisements, while the other goal is to provide PS3 users with some much needed and requested features (cross game invites, game comparisons, etc.). So of course it would be in Sony's best interest to give PS3 users incentives to accessing HOME so they can view these advertisements.

However, and of course this is my personal opinion through research, I believe that the appeal of HOME won't hold the majority of PS3 owners. I think most users will just want to partake in this PSN community without the need to travel or interact with anyone's 3D avatar and/or apartment space. These users will benefit most from the 2D interface when wanting to use community features in a quicker and more efficient manner.

So when we look at HOME, it's said (according to you) that those expecting a MMO or 2nd life may be disappointed. However on the opposite end of the spectrum, we have our gamers who just want to jump in and gather a group of friends quickly to play some games. So yes, there will be a market and demographic for the 3D space in HOME, but I always thought the main appeal to HOME was the features it's supposed to introduce, not the fact that it's 3D.

If Sony mainly cares about recouping costs through advertising, then yes, it would be a failure of Sony's vision for HOME is most people used the 2D interface. However if Sony mainly wishes to become a better contender to LIVE through HOME, then I don't see it would be a failure by using the 2D GUI.

I just don't see the 3D aspect having long legs for the majority of PS3 users.

going back and reading my wall of text, my point may not be very clear, I hate comments sections for full discussions.

Anyways, sorry if it's hard to follow.

three years after live came to next gen gaming and those features not there........they must look at the larger picture and actually try and compete

Three years after the 360 launched, MS finally seemingly put out a console that didn't fail.

Point is, companies make mistakes, hopefully they learn.

Three years after Sony, lies and fail promises you still follow their every move like a true dedicated cult member of SDF.

Point is, companies makes asshole followers, you hope they learn but they never do. - please this is not a insult just an observation

XBL is not what its hyped up to be for the most part.
Written by VaeVictus on 2008/12/09

Seriously, wtf are you talking about B1ue? Three years, you still bring the same tired comments to the forum. Take a brief break, come up with something new, and come on back.

You take more offense to logic than blacktiger does sometimes.
Written by Xenos on 2008/12/09

wow, and here I thought we could have a civil discussion here for once.

petty fanboy shit needs to die already
Written by VaeVictus on 2008/12/09

I guess I should put ***'s next to my point so that those with lower comprehension can see what I'm saying in reference to ridiculous fanboy banter. I am one of the FEW here who own and play both HD consoles, so for me to be accused of being an outright fanboy is nothing short of f*cking retarded.

If you are offended by my comments, then obviously what I say applies. If not, then it isn't directed towards you.

You choose whether or not my comment applies.
Written by Xenos on 2008/12/09

Are you talking to me?

Cause my comment wasn't directed towards you.................at all lol
Written by VaeVictus on 2008/12/09

I'm as sick as the next person of hearing the same fanboy bullsh*t over and over again. Sometimes this place is a broken record.

No, I'm serious, my comment was directed towards blu, I don't even think your post was there when I was typing mine out lol

Written by B1ueBurneR on 2008/12/09

Talking about home is bringing up things from the past, what Three years now?. This matters to me because I'm still on the fence if I should buy a PS3 or not. But everytime the subject comes up its nothing new from SDF on this site is the same old comments over and over.. so yeah I understand what you mean about broken record part.

@VaeVictis, you name fits you perfect, should I play the violin now or later? I'm not here to call you out as the GR biggest PS3 hardcore fanboy in disguise, something you'll never admit until Sony gets the lead in this Gen if they do. Calling you out would be like asking a girl that bitching at you if she's on her period, and she says yes .. but thats not reason she's bitching about nothing.. get my drift. ? note: I'm not calling you a bitch .....i'll compliment you later on down the road. Same could be said about Xenos when it comes to the 360.

I'm never offended by your comment, you never fail to put a smirk on face.
Written by Xenos on 2008/12/09

Ummm victus has come out and said he's a ps3/sony fanboy before.

You won't see me admitting such a thing because there is a drastic difference between preference and fanboyism. fanboys show bias towards one specific side, knowinly or unknowingly. I merely try to keep the playing field level since they PRETTY MUCH ARE.

If a sony fanboy rants on about BS then I speak up, if a xbox fanboy rants on about BS, I speak up.

So honestly, your comment falls all over itself.
Written by PimpDaddy on 2008/12/09

Fanboy this. Fanboy that. Atari 2600 FTW. What do you all know about that???
Written by Xenos on 2008/12/09

If the ps3 launched at $400, had a consistent collection of great games, while the xbox 360 launched a year later at $600, I would be a ps3 owner instead of a xbox 360 owner.

Always hated how GAME preference and financial situations lead you single minded idiots to automatically point the "fanboy" finger.

I've owned the majority of every console every generation and at least TRY to see the good and bad of every console/service/game.

That's A LOT more than I can say for some other members here.
Written by VaeVictus on 2008/12/09

If some of you guys would look at my comments, you'd see I'm not some blind fanboy. Really, you only show how retarded you are when you pick and choose one thing or another to harp on, then follow it up with a 3 year old retard statement.

Do you see me harping on the greatness that is HOME? No.

SDF, Look ma, I can use an ack, an ak, an ackk, an acronym. I'm the leetist of the leet.
Written by PimpDaddy on 2008/12/09

Can we just move past this. Look. i own all 3 consoles but I prefer my 360. So that makes me somewhat of a 360 fanboy. Because I want it to do better than the other consoles. Have better games. Justify 50 dollars a year for XBL. Think the controller is better, etc... Heck it even makes me happy when I see the 360 outsell the PS3.

Just like you VaeVictus prefer the PS3. You prefer the games. Controller. Think the online is decent, etc...

Just like Xenos prefers the 360 because it is the only console he owns this generation, and the fact that he wont hesitate to hide his agenda in ripping on the blind Sony fanboys.

Were all fanboys to some degree. So lets just stop living in denial.
Written by Xenos on 2008/12/09

We'll have to agree to disagree there Pimp.

Though I can't believe this arguement is still going on. Come on people, play these damn games instead of bickering over them! =p

I am sooooooo tired right now @_@

I'm watching you Dewey. I know your tricks. (Night at the Roxbury).

I'm stuck here in a computer lab at a retirement home and it would seem that all of the elderly in this specific home are not that interested in computers as this has been the 2nd night in a row where i'm stuck here twiddling my thumbs.

Just trying to pass the time is all. =)

Vae, so you can pick & choose which questions to ask me and answer it yourself at the sametime.? Like I said before It don't matter to me that you're a Sony Fanboy just don't front about it. Look how worked up you get about nothing.. its started when Arthurs56k took a jab at Sony, You Took a Jab at MS, I took a Jab at Sony& you because you just looked so sad when you tried to stick up for Sony about making mistakes. you try to hard sometimes.

Would I jump on XBL and play a game with if I have time? Yes... so chill the fuck out man..

Anybody what to jump-in a co-op sessions on XBL in Gears 2 on Insane.
Written by Xenos on 2008/12/10

MS bashing threads also get a lot of attention sky, wonder why.

My guess is that there are far more sony fanboys here than is needed. Instead of playing their beloved console so much, they are spending time on the internet trying to justify their own decision so that they can feel better. Meanwhile the owners of the other "lesser" consoles are too busy actually playing games on their consoles to give a shit what some fanboy of a last place console thinks.
Written by poprocker on 2008/12/10

I think the XDF is just more vocal on this site for now. It seems to come in cycles. Honestly that's probably what keeps most people even coming to this site.
Written by PimpDaddy on 2008/12/10

Xenos: Good one. Except I own the "lesser" 360 and its still not back from RROD :(

Xenos: Were really only down to 2 people who I would consider Playstation Polesmokers on this site. That is Sky and BlackTiger. All the rest migrated to PS3 fanboy sites such as N4G.

I have a confession to make though. I actually spent more money on PS3 related games, DLC, and accessories this year than I did my 360 or Wii. In fact even my Wii got more love from the wallet than my 360 did. Yet of all the consoles I wanted to break the least it was the 360.

I still havent been able to experience all that is Gears 2.

PimpDaddy am cry

poprocker: Maybe you should have kept Dudeman instead of poprocker and represented the SDF :p

At least you did it in a way that was entertaining. Instead we are stuck with Retard BlackTiger and Tool Sky.

We need more people who prefer the PS3 to bring balance to the force.

That being said RROD FTW!!!!!
Written by poprocker on 2008/12/10

I may bring back dudeman. He's itching to argue on the internet. You've gotta get that dang RROD machine back man. There is Gears2 and L4D to be played. L4D is addicting as all heck right now.

Maybe i'll bring back dudeman in the year of the ps3 which has been delayed until 2009.
Written by PimpDaddy on 2008/12/10

poprocker: I shoul dprobably stop bitching about RROD. I retired my PS3 and Wii for the past 2 months anyways because I have no time. I spend all my free time in the gym trying to get my arm rehabbed.

RROD was actually a blessing in disguise. I would jut like to thank you and Xenos for letting me know how great the 360 games are. Thanks alot...

I was browsing through the threads last night looking for something and it's sad and sick at the same time that the threads with the most attention are those either sony related or 360 bashing.

So no we don't need ANY more of any kind of fanboy here. Honestly it's pathetic that I don't want to post a positive sony related thread or a negative 360 topic just because I know the direction that thread will go. I've learned my lesson to how far the ignorance and assumptions will go here from my RAGE thread. Fuck that and fuck the ignorant asses that ruined what should have been a civil thread.
Written by VaeVictus on 2008/12/10

2.5 hours of sleep today Xenos?
Written by Xenos on 2008/12/10

lol less.

I was all wired by the time I got home last night that I couldn't sleep. Ended up watching the Protector (great movie) along with Sin City, and a couple other flix.

Between traffic this morning, BS at work, and the typical fanboy/ignorant banter here, I could punch a baby how annoyed I am =p

None of that changes the fact that I'm right though ;)

I have no issues discussing the + and - of these companies, but that has proven to be impossible here. Look at the last few threads I've started, if they were ps3/ps3game related they would have earned more posts and you know it.
Written by VaeVictus on 2008/12/10

I'm not sure what threads you refer to. I know I posted by myself in the Killzone 2 thread forever, so I don't know how much truth there is in that. I don't think a thread/forum's popularity on this page is related to either console as much as it is related to whether or not fanboys see inflammatory worthy subject matter.
Written by Xenos on 2008/12/10

I'm too busy, but by a quick glance at the first page of threads within each system's forum doesn't really support your comment.

The only time anything xbox/wii-positive gets a good amount of posts is from trolls like sky flooding it with FUD and idiots like me giving him the attention that he doesn't deserve.
