Now, on to the good stuff. Let's start with the video management software. I have to say, I particularly loved this part for many reasons. I am a video encoder at heart. I cannot tell you the amount of times I have re-encoded video just to squeeze that last bit of quality out of the images. So, I can say without question, I am somewhat of an authority on video encoding. That is why this software is great. First, you start off and load any video you want to view on your PSP in the left side of the software. When I say any, I mean just that: .avi, .mpeg, .mpeg, .wmv, .mov, .mpe, .3gp, and .mp4. Now those are the official ones supported by Datel, but you know us. Never satisfied with the instruction manual, we went ahead and tried .asf and .smr, and both worked! Now, the software wont recognize those extensions, but if you convert them to .avi, they will work. We cannot promise that 100% of asf/smr will work with this method, but it is a good bet most will. Once you have loaded the movies you wish to transfer to your PSP into the software, you then select the movie you wish to convert to PSP format. Once you select the quality of the encode you want, and the aspect ratio, using the simple buttons in the middle of the local and PSP windows, you hit convert. Our test was the Frame City Killer trailer, which came in DiVX format .avi. The software took about 1 minute and 10 seconds to convert the .avi into an 11mb PSP mp4 file.You can download the original video here and the re-encoded test video here (max quality settings, 16:9 ratio). You can see for yourself that the converted video is pretty impressive. Now, once the video is converted, there will be a new .mp4 file in the directory in which the original source file was located. You simply load that file into the software left window and hit copy. The software will then transfer it over to your PSP, of course the free space meter is still there. |
