Sony PSP 2.0 Firmware Mini-Review

The main way to input addresses and other text in to the PSP browser is the main drawback of this system. The crummy keyboard on the PSP, as you already know from personalizing the unit when you first powered it on, works like a cellular keypad. More than one letter on each button, corresponding to numbers. Total garbage. Be that as it may, they did add all the most common web prefixes and suffixes you could possibly use, to make things a bit quicker, which does seem to help a lot. Your first choice is the file menu, open it and pick address entry. You can view this menu in the first image. After entering the address into the entry screen and selecting the PSP equivalent of "go", the webpage begins to load. Now here is where you must make your first choice. The default viewing mode for the PSP is called "normal." Too bad it is anything but. The PSP screen, of course, is not meant to handle full web pages, so you only get about 1/3rd of the page in the screen. The normal mode is illustrated in the second image below. Nice if you have time to side scroll, but useless otherwise. There are 2 other viewing modes to select from. You can change the view by going to the "view" menu on the bottom of the browser. The other 2 choices for viewing modes are called "smart-fit" and "just-fit." The smart-fit option is basically what PDA's use to display web pages. The browser divides the page up in to thirds, and lines them up vertically for you to scroll down. You can see this illustrated in image 3 below. The just-fit option is the best by far. It basically miniaturizes the entire webpage to fit on the PSP screen, and unless you have 80-year-old eyes, this should be big enough for anyone to use. You can see this mode in the 4th image below.

That pretty much covers the basic functionally of the browser. We surfed to many pages with java scripts without any problem. Cookies seemed to work fine, and the browsing speed was acceptable. Where we ran in to a problem was flash. Our choice for the flash test was www.homestarrunner.com in case you were interested. All that showed was a blank page so we decided to try one more. We went right to the source at www.macromedia.com and tried to install the flash player. It could not identify the best flash version for our PSP, so we had to choose manually. None of the choices worked. We guess this is something for Sony to add in the next upgrade. Now on to the advanced menu choices.
