The stylus in the new DS is now larger and matches the systems color. It is not only thicker but longer, and heavier, which worked out as a very good thing. While playing I never lost the stylus in my hands while switching from face buttons to stylus control, as most DS games require. This new stylus is a great improvement over the last one. It should also be said that the stylus has been moved, as it can now be found on the right side of the unit on the bottom, and it is possible to slide it out easier during play.

The microphone moved to the hinge, and is protected when the unit is closed. The power and WiFi indicator has also moved to the exterior of the unit, now located on the top left. The power button itself takes a page form the PSP with a new design and placement as well. It is now a switch that you move and hold till the unit turns on, then it springs back into place. It is also now on the right side. This means no more accidental power downs, and is the best single idea I have seen in the unit.

With all the things that Nintendo did right with this new DS, they did do a few things incorrectly. First, the finish on the DS is now coated with a clear plastic shell that looks stunning, but happens to come to a fairly sharp edge on the sides of the DS when it is open. You will really see this if you are resting your hand on the edge of the DS while playing, another thing I do all the time while using the stylus. After about ten minutes of Metroid Prime Hunters, the heel of my hand was done. Hopefully this problem is fixed for the US release of the device later this year.

My other complaint with the new DS is that the sound is noticeably lower on this DS then on the older one. During the same Mario Kart DS session I spoke about, both of us turned up the volume to play it loud. The only problem was his DS was much louder then mine. I would say that the DS lite plays its sound at only 2/3rds of the originals volume. This might be because the new DS probably has smaller speakers then the original as the holes in the case for the sound are around a ¼ of the size in the new DS. This is not an issue when playing with headphones, but if you plan to play with friends with their older DS’s be prepared listen to their games over yours.
