The gameplay itself is fairly straightforward. If you have never played BF2 before, I will sum up the general idea for you. Basically, every map has a certain number of control points, and the basic objective is to capture these points by lingering around the flag until the meter swings over to your team’s side. This can take up to 1 minute if you have to fill an entire meter. All the while you are capping the control point, the other team will receive a message saying the control point they previously held is being stolen. You then have to defend the point while you are capping it. It makes for a lot of fun, as well as a lot of “oh come on!’ moments. The game also has a rank-based level system for both the online and single-player modes. Player’s ranks are based on the amount of total points they have accrued thus far. From Private all the way to up 5-Star general, players can achieve high ranks as they gain points. The online rooms are also rank-based, so if you are a 5-Star General, you will not be put into a room with a bunch of Privates – a good choice on EA’s part.

Unfortunately, the gameplay suffers from several glitches which take away from the integrity of the game. First of all, there is a way for players to get up to 100 points per round by doing nothing. This has lead to the leaderboard top 40 or 50 players all being cheaters. While EA promises to take care of this issue soon, it makes for a lot of mis-matched player rooms. On top of this, the voice-chat in the game which plays a very important part in team co-ordination is almost non-existent. This is because the voice chat actually stops working within a few minutes of your first match. After that, only some players can hear you if you are lucky, and most times no one can hear you at all. The only solution to this problem at this time is to completely log out of Xbox Live and log back in, but this is pointless as the problem rears its ugly head again within minutes. EA has also promised to fix this bug as soon as possible, but no date has been given yet. The third problem with the gameplay is lag. While most matches are mostly lag free, there are times in the match where you will die because of lag. It is unavoidable. This is very frustrating and leads to many-a-curse being yelled at my TV. All this issues certainly take away from gameplay in a big way, but then again, Battlefield 2 without network issues just wouldn’t really feel like Battlefield at all. Let’s get to the mode by mode.

The Campaign mode is where you will do all of your single player gaming. To be honest, there really is no benefit to completing the single-player campaign. It does not unlock any weapons or extras that you can use in online play. In fact, most players do not even bother to finish the single player mode. One interesting feature of the Campaign mode to note is the Play Challenge option. In this mode, you can perform certain challenges based on objectives the game creates for you. It makes for a nice break from the single player action.

The Xbox Live mode is the main area of play in Battlefield 2. You can play a ranked or non-ranked game, and you can play in both normal mode and Capture The Flag mode. Pretty standard stuff, but where BF2 shines is its clan options.
