Sony Says PS3 Warranty Voided When Used With Surge Protector >
2007/10/16 23:12:52: Posted by DM
This sounds a bit fishy to us, but according to information over at MaxConsole, a Sony rep told a user that his bricked PS3 had a voided warranty because the unit was plugged into a surge protector. If this is true, Sony really has reached the height of arrogance. You can bet if it was not plugged into a surge protector and it bricked, Sony would claim the opposite. Rumor mill for now.

Surge Protectors are needed since most of us only have 2 inputs per electrical outlet.
Written by arthur56k on 2007/10/16

hahahaha, that would be a new high even with their standards
Written by blacktiger on 2007/10/17

that is the dumbest thing i ever heard ! and top of that how would sony know if surge is being used ????

KROGAN IF YOU WOKE UP CAN U EXPLAIN if u know ... let me guess sony is just dumb eh ?

well actually so far this news is retarded !
Written by daveydz3 on 2007/10/17

i seriously don't believe it. I know sony says dumb things, but that is so idiotic it has to be false
Written by WithoutPrejudiceGamer on 2007/10/17

This is likely false or missing info... such as the surge protector being faulty and caused the problem.
Written by arthur56k on 2007/10/17

probably false, they6 would have to doa tonne of research to miraculously discover that you used a surge protector, either way its dumb of them if its true.

tiger, where on earth is krogan over here?
Written by Good Lord on 2007/10/17

Very poor story by a stupidly biased website.
Written by poprocker on 2007/10/17

just get a good surge protector that has a warranty with it. Also just don't tell sony it was plugged into a surge protector. End of story.
Written by arthur56k on 2007/10/17

why on earth shoukd they even void the warranty if you used a surge protector? that is if its true, its either poor journalism from the source or Sony crap

a Surge Protector could be Sony's excuse for the Playstation 3 experiencing an overheating problem where the semiconductor chips reach a temperature that causes the chips that are soldered together to become unattached from each other.

In reality, that will happen with or without a Surge Protector; it does not matter at all. I have several friends who are certified electricians, and you are ALWAYS supposed to use a Surge Protector with all of your home electronic products, preferably with the Surge Protector plugged in to the bottom electrical socket.

Defective Playstation 3 systems like this have been reported quite a bit. In Taiwan the government literally had to step in, because Sony refused to honor the Warranty.

It seems Sony doesn't want to honor the Warranty here either.
Written by incoming00 on 2007/10/17

my ps3 has been on a surge protector for quite a long time with no problems. and i think the real reason why Sony wont honor the warranty(if its true) is because once you plug it in a surge protector, its being covered by that manufactors guarantee. mine states it'll replace anything up to $200,000 if the surge protector causes damage to anything plugged in. so instead of me going to Sony, i would go to the manufactor instead.

These ridiculous comments by Krogan Battle Blah Blah are as biased and pathetic as the “reporting” on this site. He must surely be part of the staff.

Sad.
Written by CianMCL on 2007/10/17

so the 360 has had no overheating problems then krogan?
Written by madgunde on 2007/10/17

Here comes Krogan with the BS FUD. Krogan, don't even try to spread your lies about Sony having widespread hardware issues. We all find it very hard to believe that you have several friends, let alone several that are certified electricians whom you've actually discussed this topic with.

Response to madgunde:

It is a 100% proven fact that the government of Taiwan had to FORCE Sony to honor the Warranty of the Playstation 3 in that region of the world. The government of Taiwan received so many complaints about the Playstation 3 that they actually did have to go public with the problem and FORCE Sony to do what they should have been doing all along.

Response to incoming00:

There is a BIG difference between these two scenarios:

(1) A Surge Protector manufacturer replacing a group of products that were damaged during something such as a lighting strike.

Compared to

(2) Just the Playstation 3 burning out on its own due to the poor semiconductor soldering that eventually caused the chips to become unattached from each other; thus losing their ability to conduct electricty, which prevents the PS3 system from working properly.
Written by daveydz3 on 2007/10/17

incoming00: you're right but the surge protector company would need proof. how do they get proof? i'm not sure.

i seriously don't believe this story.

*

* Surge Protectors DO NOT cause any type of surges; they prevent them. In fact, I have a $250 surge protector from Monster Cable that actually tells me what my electrical current is rated at, and it keeps it steady--where it is supposed to be.

Sony has absolutely no right to try and cheat people out of a Warranty due to the semiconductor construction of the Playstation 3, which gradually causes the chips to become un-soldered from each other over the course of time in a way that will cause the Playstation 3 to become "bricked" and useless, especially since Sony is now using "surge protectors" as an excuse to void the warranty.

Sony needs to accept responsibility for these design flaws and defects.

Sony, even if it costs a lot of money, please honor the warranty instead of once again having the government force you to do what you promised consumers.
Written by incoming00 on 2007/10/17

urdnot, where are you getting all this BS about the Taiwanese government stepping in and forcing Sony to replace the consoles? i cant seem to find anything remotely close to what you are stating. not only that, how would you know exactly what causes the PS3 to "brick"? you would think that news like this would be all over the place, but after a few searches, i couldnt find a thing. just saying a bunch of smart words doesnt necessarily mean its true. you always find some way to put the PS3 down in any moment, but making stuff up is just plain low...

Have anyone of you called Sony service? Anyone? Hello?

I bet u haven't, and neither of those guys on the Sony forum has.

I have called and they told me: Surge protectors? you'd better have one, UPS? even better, voided warranty? not a chance.

Now the question is: how stupid are you, not to do that simple thing?

It took me about 2 minutes, that's 1 minute less than it took me to post this.

Response to Game_Demon:

It's easy for Sony to say you should use a Surge Protector before you say something is wrong with your system--before you give them the serial number on your system. At that point in time they apparently would WANT you to use a surge protector, just so that when something eventually DOES go wrong with the Playstation 3, then Sony can try to blame it on the surge protector.

But, according to this information, once you start telling Sony serial numbers, and making an official claim that a surge protector was used with the Playstation 3, then Sony will try and use that as an excuse to void the Warranty...and that is NOT a surprise, because Sony would NOT honor the warranty of the Playstation 3 in parts of Asia...the government of Taiwan literally had to FORCE Sony to honor the warranties of defective Playstation 3 systems.

It's a nice theory, probably can make a movie out of it. I have another theory for you: Bullshit
