Sales of video games hardware and software dropped by just over 15% in Japan in 2008, according to data from Enterbrain. The decline is due to lack of new hardware in 2008, even with the introduction of the new PSP and DSi. The year before, 2007, saw the launch of Wii and PS3 in Japan, so sales were higher. 2009 should be interesting to watch, we will see if it evens off.

the wii took storm the previous year, i'd say its the slower Wii game sales which are mostly to blame for the overall sales.

Nah, it's the slower ps3/360 sales that are to blame. The Wii and DS (and maybe the psp at times) are the only systems keeping drop in sales at 15% and not higher.
