Team Fortress 2 is no exception. The game was built using Valve’s Source Engine, except this time around the game was built from scratch to be a separate release. The game's premise is very simple -- 2 teams are pitted against each other on a field of battle, and the teams must either annihilate the enemy or capture all of their bases. Team battle stripped down to its basic elements, and done well.

What makes Team Fortress so unique is not only the graphical style (more on that later), but the fact that there are nine different classes of characters that gamers can choose from at the beginning of the round. These nine different roles fall into three categories -- offense, defense, and support. The offense classes -- Scout, Soldier, and Pyro, are all exactly what their class says. These roles are designed to kill the enemy. The Scout does it with his shotgun and blazing speed, the Soldier does it with his rocket launcher, and the Pyro does it with his flamethrower. All three are deadly, and all three are necessary.

The defense classes include the Engineer, the Demoman, and the Heavy. The Engineer is probably one of the most useful classes in the game. Not only does he wield a powerful shotgun, but he can build Sentry guns which annihilate any enemies across its automatic firing line of sight. The Demoman uses an explosive grenade launcher to fire bombs that detonate at a time of the Demoman’s choosing, and the Heavy is a hulking brute who wields a rail gun and a shotgun, and has an exorbitant amount of health.

The support classes include the Medic (the class I play), the Sniper, and the ever popular Spy. The Sniper is simply that -- a bloke with a long range high powered rifle that can kill enemies in one shot. The Medic is a bit more complicated. The Medic has a gun which fires syringes, but his main weapon is the “Ubergun.” This weapon literally pumps health into teammates. In fact, if you can find a Heavy to pair with who will agree to protect you, you can literally follow him around and pump him full of health as he consistently kills any enemy he runs into. As if that was not enough, once the Medic has pumped enough health, he can activate a short burst of invincibility for both him and the teammate of his choosing. It is a lethal combination. The Spy also has a slew of abilities at his disposal. The Spy can turn invisible for a period of time and use his knife to backstab enemies. The Spy can also disguise himself as any member of the opposing team. To top it all off, the Spy can also use an electronic device to disable enemy Sentry guns. As you may have guessed this is probably the most popular class for beginner players.
