To make up for this it seems EA made Dynasty mode fairly involved. Dynasty mode is basically EA’s version of an NHL manager game, where you can choose to play or not play the team’s games yourself. While there is no create-a-player for regular modes, there is a create-a-player feature in Dynasty mode. You can use your own coaches and put them in charge of team development, you can even make them focus on hand-eye coordination, skating, or shooting.

The online mode of the game is your standard EA online setup. You can play ranked and unranked matches, and well, that is about it. Things like league creation, fantasy drafts, and favorite online teams are all suspiciously missing. These modes should have been added as they give the game a much greater online replay value, and keep players involved in the game for much longer. EA really needs to work on some classic and unique online modes.

Now on to the main improvement in this year’s game, and the thing that has everyone talking – the skill stick right analog control system.

The right analog stick is your hockey stick. Plain and simple, that is the best way to explain it in one sentence. If you move the stick to the left, you will bring the puck left, if you move it right, you will bring the puck to the right. You can flick the stick up to perform a flick shot, or pull down to wind up a slap shot. The buttons on the face of the control pad are rarely used, except in the case of a fight.

Now, you may be saying to yourself that the right stick being used for special moves is nothing new, it has been used to perform sidesteps and dekes in hockey games for years. This is something totally different. The entire game is built around the skill stick this year, making it a totally different experience then just performing some pre-recorded deke. It also takes a heck of a lot more skill to score now, so do not expect to pick up the stick scoring method right off the bat.

Another by-product of the skill stick which makes the game that much better is the fact that the stick makes the one-timer much less effective. The one-timer has long been the method by which players score again and again in electronic hockey games. With the skill stick one-timers are infinitely harder, and they are no longer the staple for getting the puck in the net.

The skill stick is really one of the most innovative and imaginative things that EA has brought to gaming in years. You can really feel the excitement on a breakaway as you skate left and shoot the puck right. You can literally force the goalie out of position to the left and then flick the puck into the goal on the right. Of course, if you are not going to play with the skill stick, then you may be much more suited to NHL2K7, but everyone should at least rent this game to try the new control system.
