No 1080p PS3 Games For Now? >
2006/09/06 14:25:19: Posted by DM
According to Kikizo, when Sony was responding to the "No HDMI Cable Included Caveat" on the official PS3 website, they also let slip that the games (not the Blu-Ray movies) that are released for the unit in the beginning of its life will not be 1080p compatible. In fact, SCEE's Jonathan Fargher says the only game that supports the full 1080p right now is Gran Turismo HD, which may never see a retail shelf. Sony did say that an announcement would be made at TGS later this month, though. Oh boy Sony, this has not been a good day for you, has it? (Thanks, dbreau)

why do they even rellease the Ps3? they should start it all ower from the begining, skip blue ray make the box smaller (and maybe make it look nice cause it the worst design ever) the Ps3 is going to be a console with alot of problems!

eh.. always the lies..

Walkin, I FULLY agree with you; the Japanese analysts such as Mitsubishi Securities have been saying all along that there is an excellent chance the Playstation 3 would be delayed in Europe. Mitsubishi Securities also says that Sony will only ship 3 systems by March of 2007, and they said that BEFORE Sony made this announcement. For some reason, Sony keeps saying that they will still reach their sales goals...how STUPID does Sony think people are!!!

Ha....hahahahahahahahaha,i'm lovin this crap,lmao

Sony thinks that people will just keep believing LIES no matter what. People are NOT STUPID, like Sony believes we are!!!

Pos, I agree with you 100%. When Sony saw the Xbox 360 hardware, they were forced to redesign the Playstation 3 in a way that made it much more expensive, much more difficult to develop games for. The Playstation 3 was redesigned in a way that did not use custom technology; the GPU is based on four-year old Nvidia technology. The Xbox 360 uses 100% custom designed technology based on the new Unified Shader technology that Windows Vista uses.

The Playstation 3 design should have been scrapped as soon as Sony saw the Xbox 360. Instead, Sony made the same mistakes that Sega did when they tried to redesign the Saturn after seeing the original Playstation. This time, it was Sony making the mistakes.
Written by optaviusx on 2006/09/06

I said it from the get go man they'd have to seriously diminish the quality of the games if they want go 1080p.

If there are ever 1080p games to show up think "how amazing would it have looked at a much more resource saving 720p?"
Written by whYte420 (113) on 2006/09/06

This is hilarious... Sony is a fuckin joke, I laugh at people who still believe all there bullshit.
Written by Someguy (1) on 2006/09/06

This is PS1 & Saturn Allover... just this time Sony is in Sega's court.

Sega saw the PS1 and made a mess of the console to try and match it.

I ain't a fanboy.. but i can see Sony ain't the almighty they once were!
Written by kidkit on 2006/09/06

I thought we've known this for a long time.... There has been enough hate dished out today against sony that repeating this news was more than unnecessary by Kikizo.

For the PS4, sony should get a developer to brag about the graphics.. so we never have to hears something like "120 fps" ever again.

i cant wait for TGS
Written by nock on 2006/09/06

We have known this for a long time, but up until now, Sony was still claiming that "1080p is the be-all, end-all of gaming." Its just one more time that they have had to come clean and admit that they havn't been completely honest.
Written by Smarty Pants (291) on 2006/09/06

Thats a pretty weak 'news' source to begin with; considering that Resistence is reported to be coming out in 1080p 30fps (look it up on IGN). The only direct quote is from some unamed industry source (MS?) from who knows when. You guys need to take a breather and look at things more objectively. Although, GR is better than those kids at joystiq.
Written by optaviusx on 2006/09/06

Smarty that is the biggest lie I have ever seen... Resistance at 1080p 30fps?

Its 720p.... 30fps.
Written by sharod on 2006/09/06

Yeah, Smarty Pants read that article carefully. They said they were shooting for 1080p, but the game is 720p.

Delays delays delays delays

I have had ENOUGH of this!

I'm getting an Xbox360 when GTA 4 is released.
Written by RastaDator (104) on 2006/09/06

I understand this is a good day for X-bots, but you must remember that best PS3 franchises are still under heavy development and they are not even PS3 launch games, besides that devels are mastering their skills programing the PS3, its pretty logic that at this early stage games come at 720p to save PS3 resources.

mike_mgoblue you are pretty funny, if x360 is so powerful, innovative and uses the same tech than Vista why Crytek said Crysis can't be ported to x360?
Written by Smarty Pants (291) on 2006/09/06

Al Hastings, Chief Technology Officer: Our intention is to support all HD modes including 1080p. The framerate will be locked at 30 frames per second in both single-player and multiplayer. We use a number of different codecs internally including AC3 and ATRAC3 depending on what's best suited to each particular case. The highest quality output format our game supports is 7.1 uncompressed over HDMI.

...this isnt Sony guys, this is a developer that know his shit. This is a more reliable source than some un-named source on some webite which doesnt use direct quotes from the person they're referencing.
Written by mason (47) on 2006/09/06

the only thing I would want a ps3 for is God of War and if they do another Shadow of the Colossus game. Most everything else I can get on the 360.
Written by DepheCt (274) on 2006/09/06

Heres the problem... All you people seem to think most of the masses read these forums to know all about the problems and delays. The truth is... They dont. So people will buy this hunk of shit no matter what it does or when it comes out cause its sony. They may be getting bad press.. But only to the hardcore that read it. So it dosent matter whats said about them and their lies, Their cover ups, Or their problems... Ask the casual gamer what ps3 is doing putting bluray in their system. The anwser will be "bluray?" Hell i know tons of casual gamers that dident even know that games now a days are on dvds lol.

So all in all this wont hurt em a bit, As much as i would love it too.. Have their lies exposed to everyone.. It wont happen.. It will still sell the fuck out. Sad times.

DAMNIT IT!!!! : Why Wait ? Get Your Self A Copy Of Saints Row.

Smarty Pants : Resistence Is Made By Insomniac And Who Is Behind Insomniac ? Sony All The Way. Its Like MS Is Behind Rare, So Rare Will Always Say Good Things About The 360.

I Still Can't Understand Why Everyone Is Talking About 1080p And BlueRay. You Guys Must Be Rich To Be Able To Buy A Tv That Can Run 1080p ! I Just Got My Self A New LCD From Samsung (LN-S4052D) And When I'm Watching A DVD In 720p The Picture Is F*cking Insane ! Why Want More Then That ? And Yes GRAW Is Amazing In 720p Also !
Written by Doc (128) on 2006/09/06

I don't see why this even matters at this point. 1080p displays are barely emerging. I dont think its even safe to say that most people who own a 360 or will be buying a PS3 even have an HDTV, let alone a 1080p capable display.
Written by optaviusx on 2006/09/06

They can easily support 1080p by making it go to 1080p but what is the point if it performs like ass?

The crysis' devs priority is the pc version of the game so there are countless interviews where they say it CAN be ported and it WONT be ported, it's possible, but not at this time, back and forth. All crysis' public showings have been on dx 9. Did you know that the 360 via memexport can enable stream out which is a dx 10 class capability? Fact is rasta ps3 games to support 1080p while being nice and playable the game needs to look like ass. Its not a matter of saving this or that the ps3 CANNOT do it end of story.
Written by Doc (128) on 2006/09/06

I guess it's almost safe to assume now that the 1080p output capability of the PS3 is reserved for Blu-Ray playback only?
Written by Mike (27) on 2006/09/06

it "is" safe to say that all ps3 games will have max 720p output!.movies on the other hand will be 1080p imo- it doesn't have the processing power to deliver 1080p 60fps

unless if their upconvert ps2 games for ex.-gt4 hd. the rsx chip is a 7800 series gpu, even a 7950gx2 can hardly keep up with frame rates running at 1080p. for example crysis
Written by Smarty Pants (291) on 2006/09/06

The point of 1080p is detail .. so, its not always about fancy lighting effects or stuff like that..upscaling 720p doesnt count (and soon Wii players will realise that upscaled 480p isnt that nice, try running your PC game at 480 to see what i mean) .. if you're going to create huge worlds with HD spec assets then the best way to show it off is with 1080p.

And, if this guy says he intends to support 1080p then i trust him .. more so than the unsupported 'news' on the linked website .. its sort of like the way that you guys suck up everything from Bungie as gospel without question.

Written by optaviusx on 2006/09/07

It isn't just about processing power the biggest thing holding the ps3 back from taking on 1080p with incredible looking games is the videocard.

The 360 gpu would do a better job at 1080p, but it still wouldn't make any sense whatsoever. All 1080p represents is a pointless waste of resources. Everyone here that wants a ps3 should hope they make the games 720p because a game at 720p can easily visually surpass a game that is at 1080p. If it were up to textures alone yes 1080p could beat 720p, but there is a lot more that comes into play as far as a game's visuals are concerned.
Written by Sky (360) on 2006/09/07

i feel its possible and we will see some 1080p games in the future.. but now it doesent make much since to have any in 1080p mainly cuz no one has a tv that can support it.. i say a year from now.. it will be somwhat main stream and afforable for lcd's and plasmas.... SED screens in 07 though so watch out... lol and watch your pockets
Written by djjsin (53) on 2006/09/07

Thats great that it doesnt make sense. I totally agree with you on that. But the point in is that one of sony's major selling points is the 1080p. They talk about how there system is true hd. Yet now there entire first batch of games arent 1080p. Why sit there and lie and say 1080p is gods gift to gaming, and then when it comes time to launch, they offer no games that run in 1080p.

The problem here is not the reason why it cant do 1080p, is the lies sony says, and how they bend the truth to try and make there system look superior. Its all false advertising IMO.
Written by Sky (360) on 2006/09/07

false advertising? not really.. they never promised and 1080p games at launch.. all they said was that there system is capable.. funny too if you think... ALOT of people have no clue what 1080p is and wont know and get a good grasp on it until end of year-q1 07 time frame.. u gotta educate the majority first and cater to the demographics... why bother making 1080p games.. if no body knows wtf it is
Written by MAKAVELI on 2006/09/07

so and what? how many people have 1080p yet?

im not surprised, after 2007 he can expect those kind of resolutions in console games.
Written by mike_mgoblue on 2006/09/09

RastaDator,

The reason why it was said that Crysis would not be ported to any of the home consoles is because the developers of that PC game wanted to make absolutely sure that it sells well when it is released on the PC, before it is eventually release for the home consoles. You can bet that Crysis will definitely see a release for the Xbox 360 at some point in time thanks to its Unified RAM architecture and Direct X design environment.

The Playstation 3 will likely not see a port of Crysis, because there is a HUGE requirement for RAM, and the Playstation 3 uses RAM not is Non-Unified. The other problem with a potential Playstation 3 port would be due to the fact that it is much more difficult and expensive to port PC games to the Playstation 3, especially when there are huge RAM requirements like Crysis would definitely require.

Here are some Crysis facts you might like to know. Crysis actually does not use the Unified Shader design that Windows Vista based DirectX 10 and the Xbox 360 version of DirectX uses. The Xbox 360 version of DirectX is sometimes called DirectX 9.360, because it has all of the features of DirectX 9, many of the features of DirectX 10, and it even has some features that DirectX 10 does not have, because the Xbox 360 uses custom hardware not found on the PC.

Although Crysis will be released at a point in time close to the launch of Windows Vista, Crysis was written with the PC version of DirectX 9, not DirectX 10. When Crysis started its development, DirectX 10 was a long ways away from being finished. The Xbox 360 version of DirectX includes all of the features of DirectX 9 on the PC. This means that all PC ports to the Xbox 360, included Crysis, are VERY easy at this point in time, and they will get even easier as DirectX 10 gradually becomes the new PC standard.

The only factor that a PC game like Crysis will have over a console game like the Xbox 360 would be the large amount of RAM--many people have speculated that you will need 1024MB of RAM to run Crysis in a decent way. In many several interviews, this was the reason why Crysis developers said they were not motivated to release the game for the Playstation 3.

The PS3 uses a Non-Unified RAM architecture, just like the PC and consoles have for decades. The Playstation 3 has a total of 512MB of RAM, just like the Xbox 360, but the Playstation 3 RAM is sectioned into a way that limits its usefulness in a very inefficient way. Playstation 3 can NEVER have more than 256MB of Video RAM; that is its limit, even if the other 256MB isn’t being used at the time.

Plus, PC RAM is not optimized in an efficient way. Console RAM is always optimized in a much more efficient way, because software made for consoles can be customized to one individual hardware design, whereas, the PC needs to consider many different potential hardware designs. The fact that the Xbox 360 has 512MB of 100% Unified RAM takes that to an even higher level of optimization that can be customized for the Xbox 360. ALL 100% of the 512MB of RAM are always working at an optimal level; that is the perfect beauty of Unified RAM technology.

So, to answer your question, the reason why the developers said Crysis will only be developed for the PC is so people have a greater motivation to purchase it for the PC when it is released. But, if history is any indication--and it is--you can say that it is very reasonable to predict that Crysis will make an appearance on the Xbox 360.

1080p is the highest resolution of hd tv sets out at this point in time it goes 720p 1080i then 1080p the i stands for interlaced which switches back and forth between the vertical and horizontal whereas the p is for progressive scan meaning all the polygons move in unison. ps3s 1080p games are seldom but alotta work goes into them theres only 2 ps3 games out there that i know of “nba 08” and “virtua tennis 3” soon to be 3, gran tourismo 5. but they look to be of the greatest quality, whereas ive played a few microsoft's xbox 360 games that were 1080p capable and they dont appear to have put any work into it. if ps3 puts out a 1080p “capable” game rest assured you wont be disappointed. so i ask you this, sony haters, which company is really being dishonest?
