Amazon Sold 17 Wiis Per Second In 2007 >
2007/12/27 10:18:19: Posted by DM
Apparently, the Nintendo Wii was a bigger seller than Amazon realized. In fact, when the numbers were crunched, it turned out that on average, 17 Wii units per second were sold via www.amazon.com. Pretty impressive!

Not having enough of those Wii's really hurt Nintendo...BIGTIME.

nintendo isn't hurting at all krogan. they just can't keep up with demand.

"they just can't keep up with demand."

Which really amazes me. I've been a gamer for over 20 years and the Wii doesn't interest me at all. Find it kind of hard to believe that I don't fall into the 'norm'. What is so appealing about the system?

Response to kungfurabbit:

My friend, I wish you were correct; however, that isn't the way business works.

If a child asks a parent for a Wii videogame system for Christmas, but there aren't any Wii systems available to buy, then that means the parent has the following choice to make: "Do I wait until AFTER Christmas to get my child a Wii, or do I buy a similar priced Xbox 360 Arcade ssystem, which offers significantly greater graphic and online performance, and has a much stronger lineup of highly rated games."

Although some of the parents may be willing to rate for the Wii until after Christmas, the majority of parents will buy a differnt videogame system--a competitor of the Wii. When a parent makes that kind of "alternate" purchase, it will definitely hurt Nintendo, because a large percentage of kids who previously wanted a Wii will be more than happy with the other system they got for Christmas.

If the kid continues to say, "I want a Wii," the parent will eventually ask the kid, "Do you want a Wii, or do you want that $250 to be spend on 7 or 8 Xbox 360 games." Obviously, a large percentage of the kids will take the games over a system.

See...this is just one example.

Here is an example that is easier to understand:

You need to buy a razor for your son. Word-of-Mouth says that the Bic ones are good, so that is the one you want to buy. But, when you get to the store, you see that all the Bic razors are sold out. So, you ask the retail person what other brands are good. He says that although Gillette costs more than Bic, it offers greater performance, and is still in stock. As a result, Gillette gets a "Sale" but Bic doesn't...and Bic likely lost that sale forever, because from this point on the consumer will be focused on his Gillette razor.
Written by zwandaba on 2007/12/27

Wii = Bic razor

360 = Gillette razor??

so that means...

PS3 = Phillips Electric razor??

Written by kungfurabbit on 2007/12/27

wii= low price

wii= family friendly content

wii= getting off your ass to play (fattys)

wii= cheap development (every studio is on board)

the casual gamers are gonna go for this no matter what. bottom line krogan is the wii wins no matter what. now if you'll excuse me i gotta go shave with my bic razor.
Written by blacktiger on 2007/12/28

krogan are u on crack ?

cause nintendo stock is so high, they keep selling go read on gamers reports about what amazon record is,

17 wii's per second...

i wonder whats your math class report is...

you really sound uneducated seriously !!!

wii been selling out like mad hot cakes !

BUT Im always on LordFlux side !!! what does wii has really... i think it sells out to family crap !

hardcore gamers probably buying ps3/x360 all the way !!!
Written by Hand Banana on 2007/12/28

Krogan- You understanding of business reflects a simpleton's and your analogy regarding razors is ill contrived and irrelevant. I wouldn't waste my time explaining why, as I believe you may be the only person who could not see this.

*EDIT: Your*

As far as the Wii is concerned, I fail to see why the Wii is being ridiculed (other than a "its the cool thing to do" mentality.) I own PS3, xbox360, and wii, and i love all of them. Especially the Wii.

With games like Resident Evil 4 (it may be a port, but if you haven't played this with the wii-mote you're missing a near-perfect game,) Metroid, and Zelda, I fail to see it as a "kiddie" console.

Mario Galaxy is a great game, and for us older hardcore gamers, Nights is a dream come true. Mix this with the virtual console (I'm sure you'll bitch about the prices, but the convenience outweighs any qualms there in my opinion,) and your pick of a bevy of mini-games (The Wii's only real annoyance,) and you have a solid console that is definitely worth buying.

Krogan, perhaps you should realize (as if you ever will) that the Xbox 360 is NOT for everyone. You may see it as the best available option on the planet, but many others will see the Wii or PS3 as the best option. The best part about this is that NO ONE IS RIGHT. Every time i see you masking your opinions as facts I envy the massive delusion you must constantly live in.

Oh, and i can think of many people who would be quite disappointed if they opened the xbox360 instead of the wii on Christmas. Then again, I'm sure they will understand when their parents explain that that is jsut how business works. Good job, tool.
Written by zwandaba on 2007/12/28

I think you're wrong Hand Banana. The Wii is not that solid of a console.

First it doesn't have proper online features. No multiplayer.

Second half of its games are mini-games. There are only a few good games I would like to play on there system.

Not so solid after all.

But the PS3 and 360 are not without its problems.

There isn't a lot of single player on the 360, its mostly multiplayer.

The PS3 just has a leak of games.

Maybe its to early to judge but these issues shouldn't even be a problem. But what I can say is Nintendo's approach with the motion sensing but no one is using this feature properly, apart from Nintendo and some others. And for this I blame the developers.
Written by Hand Banana on 2007/12/28

This is clearly a matter of opinion, and i see your points as being very valid. I still believe the Wii to be a solid system.

No online is a poor oversight, but it certainly does have multiplayer. Wii is actually extremely fun to play with other people (which is where a lot of the mini-games come in.)

The argument that half of its games are mini-games it quite mute when the DS (inarguably solid) is plagued with brain-dog-sim-mini games. I agree there is a flood of mini-games (which is quite annoying,) but that does not take away from what makes the Wii an excellent console.

Response to Hand Banana:

Actually, "Opinions" have NOTHING to do with this situation at all.

If you look at the Statistics and Sales Figures, it is 100% clear that the Xbox 360 has a much stronger library of games than either the Wii or the Playstation 3.

For example, it is a proven fact that the Xbox 360 has more Best-Selling Third-Party games than both the Wii and the Playstation 3 combined!!!

And as far as "Business" goes...you seem to have missed the Christmas of 1996 when Nintendo could have sold 5 MILLION Nintendo 64's and easily crushed the Playstation...EVERYTHING would have been COMPLETELY DIFFERENT from that point onward. HOWEVER, Nintendo only had 500,000 systems to sell at launch, and that hurt them SEVERELY!!!

The Wii may have been selling 17 systems per second...but the Xbox 360 wasn't far behind...and what's IFNINITELY WORSE for Nintendo is that the Wii COULD HAVE BEEN selling 50 Wii's per second IF there would have been Wii's available to sell.

And many of those people who weren't able to find a Wii ended up buying something else--something manufactured by a competitor of Nintendo. Even if those people do eventually buy a Wii sometime in 2008, the competition of Nintendo still saw a benefit, because sales of competing products increased to to the lack of supply of the Wii.

these comments are Wii-diculously long.
Written by Hand Banana on 2007/12/28

You can dance around behind a facade of faux intelligence all you want. You want to base this solely on statistics? Fine. the Wii has sold more consoles than the Xbox 360 by a considerable amount. Therefor, by your twisted logic, The Wii is by far the superior system.

And the main difference between Nintendo in '96 and present day is that a year into it they have sold 18.5 million units (~3million more than Microsoft.) Somehow, according to your flawed logic, selling out quickly is a bad situation to be in. that is ludicrous. Let me try to make this simple: YES- If you are selling out because you are making 1 unit a day - that is bad. No - If you are selling out because you are only making 100 units a day - that is not bad. Add the FACT (a real fact, not like yours)that you are selling considerably more than your competitors. What is so hard to understand about this?

Oh... and ACTUALLY opinion has EVERYTHING to do with my comment. I was debating that the Wii was a solid console. Perhaps if your head wasn't clouded with thoughts of fluffing you increasingly flacid microboner, you may have understould that. Oh well.

*Edit: Understood (way too tired for this ><)

lmfgdao @ krogan

Why are you talking about nintendo 64 that has nothing to do with today. The point is nintendo is the champ this generation. With wii sales and ds sales destroying the competition i'd say the big N wins. Alot of you guys are looking at things from a hardcore gamers perspective. The casual gamer could careless about graphics, tons of features, online play what have you. They care about something cheap, fun and reliable. The casual gamers make up most of the market, and right now they see nintendo as their gaming source. Which in my opinion nintendo deserves the number 1 spot. They took alot of shit over gamecube and i'm glad they got the rebound.

HANDBANANA IS THE ONLY PERSON I THINK IN THIS FORUMS IS SUPERIOR SMART !

Krgoan Urdoonoto :

The Wii may have been selling 17 systems per second...but the Xbox 360 wasn't far behind...and what's IFNINITELY WORSE for Nintendo is that the Wii COULD HAVE BEEN selling 50 Wii's per second IF there would have been Wii's available to sell.

if they did sell 50 wii's per second then u would come up and say 100 wii's persecond otherwise they failed...

so really no point ! of talking to you !

HANDBANANA, i think your wasting your time with KROGANATO's logic !

For him selling out too fast is a bad business... doesn't that tell you he's dumb in business ?

I hate DS, but what i hate the most is when they are sold out everywhere and i can't buy it for my fuckin niece !!!!!!!!!!!

and Im getting PS3 over wii,

Wii sucks and im sorry HANDBANANA, to me a game has to be everything including graphic, but if most ppl buy nintendo, then thats consider average gamers, no matter what even if anyone buys something like n64 more than three new console today then that would consider averager gamers but n64, wether its hardcore or casual ! so stop bitchinging URDONOTOto

'can't belive nintendo won'

but then again, they are the only one that come up with ideas !
