As with many online games with a persistent ranking system, gaining levels will unlock more options for you to personalize your online avatar. New skins and models will become available as you rank up, and keep in mind, the game lobbies are also rank-based. This means that as a General you will not be able to join a room full of recruits and simply wipe the floor with them for quick points.

The actual mechanics of game play are more or less what you would expect from this type of game. The control system is responsive, and players have a decent amount of options for adjusting their control setup. You can invert the analog sticks, adjust ground vehicle controls, and turn on or off SixAxis tilt control for the Warhawk vehicle’s hover mode. Some swear by the tilt control, since it frees up your hands for aiming, but I prefer it turned off myself. You will be able to jump into the game and with a few tweaks, the control scheme should be intuitive enough for decent performance right off the bat.

The graphics in Warhawk are not the most impressive, and this is one of the game’s few drawbacks. The maps are medium to large sized, and of course, the larger the map, the more resources are used, which means less can be spent on individual item graphics and textures. This shows when the action gets very hectic, and sometimes will hinder your play, although this happens only rarely. The sound and effects in the game are more or less dead on, so that’s not much of an issue, but the voice chat system could have been tweaked a bit. When players speak, those who do not have headsets will be blasted by whatever conversation is going on at the moment with the rest of the team, and there are not many options for curtailing the volume. We can’t have everything though, I suppose.

Warhawk is one of the better PS3 games to be released to date, and if you are into multiplayer gaming at all, it is worth a purchase. If you are looking for an old-school Warhawk adventure though, you are not going to find it here. Consider this PS3 incarnation of the franchise a re-imagining of sorts. It is not necessarily a bad thing, but it is not the Warhawk you remember from the Playstation days, rest assured. The game does suffer from some graphical drawbacks, there is no single player mode, and there are no help items or tutorials to help players warm up to the new game play. Despite these issues, the game shines as an online title, and if you have a PS3, this is a must-have title if you plan to do any multiplayer gaming at all.
