I have spoken about many things the Club does right, but you must be asking why the game fails overall if all these great things are included. Well the bottom line is, the game feels like, well, it feels like it was a missing part of The Orange Box, basically. The Club is just about 1/5th of a game, and that is exactly what it feels like when all is said and done. Once you finish the single player tournament, which takes maybe 4 hours at most, and unlocked all the maps and characters (even in the easiest mode), you have pretty much experienced all there is to do in The Club. The thing that makes everything that much more of a disappointment about The Club is that any gamer who has even a bit of shooter experience can literally feel the wasted potential oozing out of this title. The game has so much that it could have offered, the fact that it ended up like an extended demo just makes gamers like me sad and angry at the same time. Why was the online mode limited to 8 players? Why do the character’s statistical strongpoints and weakpoints not make a difference? Why do the Club members not use weapons based on their backstories? All these questions and more will haunt you if you choose to buy or rent The Club. The game is filled with unused style, and that is the worst crime of all. The Club is an arcade shooter through and through that might have done fantastic had this been the heyday of the arcade machine, and there was a plastic gun attacked to the cabinet. Unfortunately, this is not that time, and gamers need so much more in order to warrant plopping down almost $70 dollars for a disc these days. The Club, as I said, is basically an extended demo, and I seriously hope and pray that Bizarre decides to release The Club 2 as the game that The Club should have been. Then we can all pretend this outing was simply a taste of what was to come in the sequel. If you have a need for multiplayer local action for a few days, then rent The Club, if you have a nigh or two to kill, then rent The Club. If you enjoy stylish running and gunning and want to play a game that makes you want to play it back, then rent The Club. Just don’t complain to me when you are left wanting to play the game that you know could be, instead of the game you got. |
