The graphics in this game are mediocre at best. Neversoft never made any secret about the fact that this game is identical on all consoles, PS2, Xbox, and Xbox360. If you compare the Xbox version of the game to the Xbox360 version, you will notice only minor improvements. The smoke looks better, the textures are bit better looking, and, of course, the resolution is higher. Don’t misunderstand me though, the game looks great, more than sufficient to make the game experience fun. What really caught my eye though, in terms of looks, was the fluid motion. All the characters move as if they were real, and while it may not be readily apparent, it surely helps to draw you into the story. All those years of motion capturing skateboard moves seems to have paid off.

The world map is where this game really falls short. You can circumnavigate the entire world of GUN in about 10 minutes. For most of the game you will be traveling back and forth between two towns, Empire and Dodge. There are missions you can take in each town as the game progresses, and we suggest you do if you hope to beat the game without pulling your hair out. The side missions include hunting wanted criminals, hunting legendary creatures that an old Indian will tell you about, herding cattle, and so on. The side missions are never complicated and they almost always can be completed within 15 minutes. It certainly gets a bit tedious at times to be honest. You can choose to skip all the side missions in the game and just play the story, but without the stat increases you are rewarded, as I mentioned before, you will have serious difficulty completing the later stages of the game.

The actual gameplay is all in the third person view. Cole can use a variety of weapons from bows to rifles to whiskey Molotov cocktails. Cole also has a quickdraw ability which is basically Gun’s version of bullet time. As long as you don’t run out of quickdraw meter you can take out most enemies with one shot and you do not even have to aim to do it. A flick of the analog stick will switch between targets. You will also be riding a ton of horses in the game, which, by the way, you can kill if you push them too hard with your spurs. The hardest part of the game is combat while in the saddle, it can get downright frustrating at times.

The enemies you fight, even the bosses, are pretty much your standard game AI. They will run into bullets, they will step on explosives, and they will not learn from their dead buddy’s mistakes. In fact, sometimes you can just shoot out the horse from underneath an enemy, and they will stand there and let you trample them. The difficulty comes from the fact that the game throws so many enemies at you at once, that at times it is impossible to avoid the barrage of bullets.
