Playstation 3 Pre-Owned Games Banned? >
2006/05/24 14:22:36: Posted by purbeast
According to GamesRadar, High street games shops have been told by Sony that there will be no PS3 pre-owned sections in their stores as it will be illegal for customers to sell any next-gen PlayStation games that they've bought. They plan to do some type of licenscing of the games to you when you "purchase" them and not giving you sole rights to the property, as Sony will still have that. If this is true, Sony is really setting themselves up for a tough run with the PS3. Click on the link for the full article.

Written by otoole on 2006/05/24

its funny how its a bs story to all the sony fanboys whos knows what it is yet
Written by aces high (5) on 2006/05/24
Its funny and it makes me pissed because if your not gonna keep the game anymore, THEN SELL IT. Wait, you cant. Sony fucked you up the ass, now have a nice day.

This is a really old story. Something like last November kind of old. It's the same as with the "Devil May Cry is coming for Xbox 360" news, someone didn't notice that the original story is a) already proven to be false and b) really, really old.
Written by silverwolf on 2006/05/24
Itaintrite, with all the BS that Sony has said since last years E3 why wouldn't I believe it? Sony has proven to be the biggest BS of all! After there scandal with the rootkit spyware I believe they're capable of anything.
Written by purbeast on 2006/05/24
Da Man this is different than the old news story you are talking about. The old news was that the discs would be binded to only 1 console and you couldn't even bring the game over to a friends house, or resell it. This new news is just stating that since you only own the license to play the game and Sony still owns the actual property, that you can't actually sell the game.

Think of it as leasing a car. You pay to use it but do not own it.
Written by Itaintrite on 2006/05/24
Well, believe what you want to. But before somebody PROVES that this is indeed true, I call BS. And no, Sony isn't the biggest BSer of all, the media is.

"This new news is just stating that since you only own the license to play the game and Sony still owns the actual property, that you can't actually sell the game."

If this were true, it'd mean that I'd have the right to make copies of the game to play as long as I'm not selling them? I'd be able to "sell" my right to play to other people and give them the hardcopy of the game for free. Pretty stupid if you ask me.

Bs or not rumor has it that sony holds a patent on technology that would allow them to do just this kind of thing. Joystiq had an article on it last fall.
Written by PRO-Ric Hard (15) on 2006/05/24
Is sony kidding, imagine keeping every single game they made just because they don't want their stores to buy them back. People would have to create a swap meet because of them. I think they lost it.
Written by Bill Nye (16) on 2006/05/24
Ever since GamesRadar has been posting 'news' such as no HDD upgrade for the $500 PS3 as well as no Bluetooth controllers, I consider them unreliable.

Plus their site design is just as annoying.
Written by silverwolf on 2006/05/24
It wouldn't be that hard to implement, all they have to do is prohibited the used game sell or rental of PS3 games to places like blockbusters, gamestop, eBay. This is where they take the biggest lost anyways.

gamesradar are higly unreliable, and this is simply untrue. No matter what you think of sony, youd be retarded to take this for the truth.
Written by otoole on 2006/05/24
to ej: actually im a 360 fanboy.
Written by neoimpulse on 2006/05/24
I wonder if we are only leasing the console also, and what are the penalties for breaking the license agreement?

Reminds me of selling a character in WoW. You can't sell the actual character, but you can transfer ownership of the character, the account and the actual box and materials as long as you don't profit from the exchange.

This has already been disproven. Move on.

you are thinking of the old rumor smartypants

" They plan to do some type of licenscing of the games to you when you "purchase" them and not giving you sole rights to the property, as Sony will still have that."

It's been that way since the dawn of electronic games.
Written by Blah (26) on 2006/05/24
Wasn't this rumor already debunked in december? O.o
Written by DM on 2006/05/24
blah you are thinking of the old rumor

just to say it once

THIS ARTICLE HAS NOTHIGN TO DO WITH COPY PROTECTION TECHNOLOGY

IT IS STRICTLY A SONY POLITICAL MOVE ON PAPER

You buy the LICENSE to PLAY the game from SONY, thus Sony still owns the disc, thus it is not yours to sell.

It has been a practice for software for a long time, just not consoles.
Written by Bill Nye (16) on 2006/05/25
You tell 'em DM.
Written by anti-optaviusx 2.0 (53) on 2006/05/25
In that case, the headline is intentionally misleading.
Written by Jon (35) on 2006/05/25
Not really anti, if you can't sell the disk when you are done with it, it ammounts to banning pre-owned games.

That said, I can't imagine this will ever happen. Whatever you think about sony, they're not stupid.

That second sentence should have read "anyone", not "you".

I'm not suggesting anti thinks anything bad about sony.
Written by Blah (26) on 2006/05/25
Nah, they already talked about this. People already talked about a rumor going around that Sony is making games so that they can play on only one PS3, and Sony debunked it. I'll find the link.

For those who aren't paying attention. Sony using tech to lock game disks to a certain console, has been officially denied by sony.

This is a different issue.

I have no experience with contract law, but I imagine it could go somthing like this: In addition to buying the disk you are also buying a non-transferable usage license. That being the case sony could persue legal action against stores which buy games from consumers with the intent to resell them.

Again, that having been said, sony won't do this. It would be market suicide.
