Kutaragi Defends PS3 Price >
2006/05/26 8:05:53: Posted by DM
In the current issue of Famitsu, Kutaragi can be seen defending the Playstation 3's high price. He says that if you consider the PS3 a toy, then yes, it is a very expensive toy. If you consider that the PS3 is more than just a toy, then it is not so much in comparison.

If they want people to not to think of it as a toy than change the name. Because young children hear the word (play) in playstation. But they want us to look at it different. That's like hearing the word Wii and say hey, now thats a manly system. Sony enough with the defending the price with all those excuses. Most of us know why the system is so high in price, because of the technology. But not everybody is going to want a $600 system to play on. Especially parents who have young children who probably will mess the system up and if your aiming for adults, well say so. But keep the lame excuses to yourself.

Oh man! I never thought of it like that, Kenny. Since you put it that way, I guess it is a super amazing deal.

the xdr ram on the ps3 is 3.2ghz :) That is insane for memory speed that should be a big help for the ps3 especially in regards to fps.

Ric Hard: Maybe you got a point saying than at $600 PS3 can not be a children toy, but I think that is precisely what Kataragi want to communicate. The next PS is no more a game machine (for kids) anymore IS a home entertainment system, it is a family system, for everyone who wants to game on but for family movies too, it can be even use as a multimedia station, all that power and features for only 400 o 600$ doesnt seem a bad deal to me. see you

RastaDator: You are correct in that its a multimedia station and thats exactly the point they need to get out there. But instead they keep trying to defend the price of the system. What they need to do is make people who know nothing about the technology in the PS3 to understand it, not just the price. I give you an example I have purchase a Panasonic 3DO when it came out. That damn thing was expensive. The system was built for multimedia purposes but panasonic did an awful job promoting it that way. So the system failed. This is all I ask of Sony, promote the system so that more people could understand that it is for children and adults. In alot of parents minds they see it as a expensive video game system. Sony needs to change that. If Sony could do that I will be one of the first people to adopt a PS3. But if they can't, Well you have to understand that a $600 price tag is scary if you feel the system will fail.

They can do that, but half of the world is whining about the price and not about what the PS3 can do so he had to explain the price.

Plus in the latest edition of famitsu, 73% of the people in Japan were looking forward to Wii and 88% thought PS3 was too expensive. So Sony had to step in and do something, and who knows....maybe a price change?

In my opinion sony only made one mistake, that is pricing the $600 package 51 dollars too much.If they sell it at $549, people would not have the impression that the two configurations are super different. People think the cheap one is carp. I personally think the cheaper one is the best deal out of any other console prices inculding xbox360 and wii.

Since the 360 apparently has the better gpu, and is a breeze to code for which could lead to...(hopefully better quality games,)I'm going to wait until I can afford an HDTV before I get a ps3. As for now, Call of Duty 2 on my 480p tv on my 360 looks great. I'll go buy a bunch of upcoming 360 titles instead of spending 6-700$ on a ps3 and 1 game.

There won't be a price drop before launch. Do any of you think that sony is charging a single penny more for the ps3 then their bottom line can handle?

How would you have liked to be one of the sony marketing guys when they heard that even taking a $300 bath on each console they were still going to cost $500 and $600.

Sino, if you think $500 for a blu-ray player with no HDMI is a great deal, I have more alien bodies for sale.

They should just delay this thing another 6 months to a year until they have4 some decent launch titles, can train developers, and provide a decent SDK to each dev who needs one. By then, costs of the BD drives and cell processors will go down, hence lower the ps3 price. Man, it must be good to work at M$ game studios right now, or for their xbox division. Sticking with standard media instead of putting everything on HD-DVD, or Bluray will more than likely pay off bigtime.

They should start marketing the functionalities of the Linux OS that the PS3 will have. Not only can it play PS1, PS2, PS3 games, DVD, Blu-Ray, digital movies, but it can also run Linux software under Linux. It'll most likely run with hardware accelerated graphics, too, since Nvidia makes their own Linux graphics drivers. Their system is more like a merging of an Apple Mac and a console.

Yea...I would definitely start touting a "homebrew" environment right out of the box thing, as a marketing ploy.

Theoretically since its an open linux environment, the ps3 "could" have the ability to emulate any older console out there fairly easily by porting over currently existing emulators. It really would be a multiplatform entertainment machine, if it's as open as they say it is...I might even re-consider getting one.

im a sony fanboy meaning i like anything sony but to be honest i cant afford it and the whole linux thing wont change my mind i got 600$ and im about to go buy a xbox360 :P
Written by nock on 2006/05/26
Hey, fanboy, go get that 360. It'll be one of the best purchases you can make. I just recently picked one up and I love mine. Trust me, there are so many cool games coming soon for the Xbox that you won't even bat an eye at the PS3.
Written by Test (72) on 2006/05/26
fanboy, november is a long time to wait, especially if the launch titles aren't that great. Go with a 360 man, then if you dont like it, trade it in to eb towards a ps3.

OptaviusX:

So what if the RAM is XDR 3200Mhz? it's rambus stuff which isn't as fast at the same clockrate as DDR. 3.2Ghz XDR = max of 25.6GB/s and G-DDR3 gives a max of 22.4GB/s.

I also complain about the $600 tag because right now many people feel they can afford that kind of money....but you want to know the truth??? 2 3 4 years from now...I see PS3 a best seller...thats my opinion...no matter how much time it cost to, they will be at top because in the past they have done a Great job...soooooo time will tell...Sayonara and keep up strong =)

I spend 600 like it's nothing... I just bought a brand new lap top today for 800 and some change. I didn't care and the worst part about it, it isn't even a good lap top.

I want the PS3... I'll have one and I won't worry about what the other guys are doing unless they manage to do something Sony isn't doing.

Naughtydogs new game

Blu-ray

Are enough for my 600 dollars, easily!
