HD-DVD or Blu-Ray - 'It Doesn't Matter' Says Gates >
2008/01/08 15:21:32: Posted by DM
MS founder Bill Gates does not appear to be too concerned that Warner has shifted to exclusive Blu-Ray backing. He believes that we will all be downloading content off the internet in the future anyway. USA Today asked Gates about his feelings on the Warner announcement, and he responded:

"There has been a lot of back and forth," began Gates. "The announcement before that was Paramount putting exclusive support behind HD-DVD. HD-DVD did well over the holidays. The other trend we're seeing is that direct download over broadband - I think the greatest example of that is Xbox Live - (is) becoming an important choice. Over time, that will be the dominant way that people get their movies."

I hardly ever buy or rent HD-DVD movies, and my brother never bought a Blu-Ray movie for his PS3, so yep Mr. Gates is right, I download AVI movies almost everyday 480p and 720p videos and burn them to DVD

ahahah i knew he wants online content ! go to gamepro and the latest news says microsoft said no to HD DVD for xbox built in !

Obviously cause MS doesn't belive HD DVD ! if they did they woud've included ! now lets see what KROGANATO's logic has to say !

Standard DVD is killing hddvd AND bluray and is going nowhere anytime soon.

people like having the physical disk... Bill has a point but it's still 10 - 15 years from being realistic. Yes, there are on demand rentals for HD but nothing in 1080p yet, and if you are getting HD over the internet rather than a telco you are still at the mercy of the connection speeds your local providers offer. In my opinion there is still a 20 year window for blu-ray to exist and profit in.

@questimElite PM the site you use. I download avi almost everyday and they have dvd quality ever since the 360 fall update

I like having the physical disc, like kidkit said. I've got a 768k download rate on my cable. My wife and I got married a couple of months ago and we just can't afford anything faster. But if I want to use my Best Buy gift card (wedding gift) to buy some hi-def movies, I can just cruise down to the local store and pick some up. Could do that a lot faster than I could download the movie.

Responses:

(1) Having a "Physical Disc" is actually a bad thing. As soon as you start to get too many movies, you actually start to have problems "finding discs," and you actually end up not wanting to get off your butt to go and put the disc in the player, then switch the A/V Receiver Channels, and then switch the TV Video Input channels, ect...

(2) With On-Demand, EVERYTHING is available, all in one place, and no changes need to be made to your equipment in the way that they do for different types of players with different sound/video formats.

(3) kidkit, with all due respect, you seem to be travelling too close to the speed of light, because time has slowed down for you...there is definitely not a 20 year window of opportunity for Blu-ray or HD-DVD to have an advantage over On-Demand. For example, I have Comcast right now, and there are HUNDREDS of On-Demand movies and TV shows that I can watch any time I want...for FREE, since I am a subscriber.

(4) It is TOTAL NONSENSE to say that HD-DVD and/or Blu-ray are better than On-Demand right now, since On-Demand currently broadcasts in 1080i rather than 1080p...the FACT is, 1920x1080i looks IDENTICAL to 1920x1080p...BOTH of them are the EXACT SAME RESOLUTION...the only difference is "how" they are displayed.

Proof: Remember when the original HD-DVD players output 1080i, but not 1080p...and then the 1080i HD-DVD players would be compared to 1080p Blu-ray movies...and the reviews would ALWAYS point out that there was NO DIFFERENCE AT ALL.

Proof: How about the reviews of 1080p Blu-ray discs like The Last Samurai actually receive reviews saying that they don't even look as good as standard DVD discs.

* On-Demand truly is the future...On-Demand offers the movies from Universal, Paramount, Dreamworks, Warner Bros., Sony, New Line, Disney, and EVERYONE...On-Demand is AlREADY the "format winner."...and On-Demand ALREADY controls a much larger percentage of the high-definition market than Blu-ray or HD-DVD...it is just a matter of time until On-Demand controls the entire market.

Hello Fellow Gamers (HFG). @QuestimElite - I'm with you on that. I download TV episodes in 480p - 720p. I also put them on Dvd & watch them on My standalone dvd player, Xbox1, X360, & pc.

@kidkit - Realistic huh.... but 10- 15 years ? That's not being realistic. Technology is constantly evolving at a geometric rate, meaning it'll be more like less than 5 yrs.

@LordFlux - I feel you pain on the finances, but $35 per Blu-Ray movie is still high. Suppose you want to purchase ...say 5 good Bluray movies at $30-$35 each. That's way more than your cable bill. Besides, cable does do Hi-def.

There are people right now ripping Blu-ray & HDDVD movies & posting them on the net for people to download & watch from 720p to 1080p. You can also put them on a Regular DVD9. Imagine that.

thats a shame !

Good thing Bill is retiring. He's more senile than ever...

I've had pay-per-view in my home for over 12 years. On-demand for the past five. XBL for 12 months. How many times have I used those services? Here's a hint... it can be counted on one hand.

People want discs Billy. The reason the CD industry has started to move disc-less is because it provides you the opportunity to buy only the songs you like instead of being forced to buy the whole album. Is the film industry going to piecemeal movies where people only buy a couple scenes? Oh wow! What a novel idea. Next we'll be buying books by the page. lol

I'm sure this is a little embarrassing for Gates. Backing the wrong horse at the cost of hundreds of millions of dollars is not the way he wanted his swan-song to go down.
Written by PimpDaddy on 2008/01/09

WithoutPrejudiceGamer : True Bill Gates probably regrets backing HD-DVD. I am glad I didnt invest money in either Blu-Ray or HD-DVD, thats for sure. But at least Bill is worth Billions of dollars. I'm prett sure he could wipe his A$$ with what evry single person in here makes over there lifetime combined and not even flinch. Thats some serious net worth.

I wonder how ole crazy Ken Kuturagi is doing after Sony told him to get the f*ck out???

Digital media is fine and dandy to technical savvy people. However i'd be willing to bet that that group is a very low percentage of the general population. The Casual/NonGaming/NonTechnical individual will always opt for physical media.

Gimme a fucking break, even a high school dropout can sense this, how sony does blu ray, ms does the opposite, full support because they know sony will go with everything they got, confuse the market, and then come back to us with xbox live marketplace videos (with lame DRm and delete), and maybe something else in the future (IPTV?)

To Krogan Fattubofdonutbatter because he can't think of anything else on comebacks like this .

(1) Having a "Physical Disc" is actually a bad thing= So how about our 360 games? Ya know so is wasting precious hard drive space, I would be pist too spending like 120 on a 20 gig (snicker) and flooding it with HD movies, but since they delete afterwards, what do I care, and if I want to watch it again, I pay for it, no pun intended ( not)

Plus you would have to be one careless fuck to damage physical discs, you probably damaged the 360 as well with the 3rrod.

2. With on demand everything is availible= Not everything, including Hd porno (face it, we do that all the time), Plus whenever we want something that isn't on demand..and where is your HD-DVD Tshirt n flag?

3. Again where is your HD-DVD Tshirt n Flag?

4.THey don't call it 1080i for nothing do they? not like they have the bw for that much resolution unless its fiber optic reciever!

you do any hd-dvd/blu ray hacking, you'll find out how its not the player's fault it can't do 1080p

Last Samurai, sure hell looks good at my samsung and its vc1! MS Codec!
