Bourne Game Developer Says UE3 Engine Has Issues On PS3 >
2008/03/14 13:53:22: Posted by DM
Yes, we have heard this before, but yet again, a developer has revealed that the Playstation 3 has some serious issues with the Unreal Engine 3.0 that require serious Sony support to work around. Speaking to Gamasutra, High Moon VP Paul O'Connor, the developers of the Bourne Conspiracy game and Darkwatch, responded to this question:

"Do you have anything to say about the development process on doing multiplatform games?"

By stating:
"We needed a lot of support on Unreal to make it run on the PlayStation 3. We got caught in the same crunch as everybody else when [Epic] finalized Gears [Of War], so that definitely slowed down the PS3 support at the time.

The issues have been worked out hough, and apparently the game is on track. Why Sony has made it so hard to utilize the engine that is turning out to be the next-gen standard, we are not sure.

?? by that quote it looks like they had a hard time getting support from EPIC while they were busy with Gears.

that Bourne games needs more than Unreal 3 engine cause it looks booty.

Written by Krogan Battle Master Urdnot Wrex on 2008/03/14

I wonder what Krogan will say...

Actually, I know what the Battle Master, Urdnot Wrex from Mass Effect has to say.

This isn't anything "new" at all.

And it isn't just the Unreal Graphics Engine that has problems with the Playstation 3. People from Valve, Take-Two, EA, Activision, Sega and many others have created custom Graphics Engines, and they all have had problems with the Playstation 3.

This is the main reason why the Playstation 3 simply CANNOT be the "Lead-Development Platform," for multi-platform games.

When problems like this arise, it takes "Time" to fix the problems. And "Time," means that lots of employees need to be paid. And when employees are paid, that means it costs a LOT of money!

With the Xbox 360, development is very easy! John Carmack said that the Xbox 360 is by far the best development environment ever created--even better than the PC, because the Xbox 360 basically IS a PC, but the Xbox 360 specifications stay the same.

When developers make the PS3 the "Lead Platform," then the games almost always end up equal in quality...but that is NOT a good thing. That means Xbox 360 owners are cheated out of the superior performance that the Xbox 360 can offer consumers.

For example, the Xbox 360 GPU can display 500,000,000 polygons per second, compared to only 275,000,000 polygons per second for the Playstation 3.

When the PS3 is the "Lead Platform," then the standard is set at 275,000,000, and that can easy be "matched," with "no loss of quality," on the Xbox 360. But that SUCKS, because the Xbox 360 was capable of SO MUCH MORE!

looks generic to me
Written by Krogan Battle Master Urdnot Wrex on 2008/03/14

When the Xbox 360 is the "Lead Developent Platform" with multi-platform games, the standard is set at a "Lowest Common Denominator," so that the games display a similar number of polygons in each frame on both the PS3 and Xbox 360. Many times that means the Xbox 360 versions will LITERALLY run at TWICE the framerate, just because the number of polygons displayed in each from are so similar. But there are other times when the Developers try to make their lives easier, and they admit that the Xbox 360 version will end up with a higher number of polygons and/or a smoother framerate, simply because the Playstation 3 hardware can't keep up.

And then there are games like Bioshock that are released exclusively for the Xbox 360, because the developers don't care about a "Lowest Common Denominator" based around the low-water mark of the PS3. Bioshock has SO MUCH DETAIL and impressive lighting that the developers clearly said the PS3 version they tried to develop could NOT keep up.

Mathematically it may "seem" like the PS3 should be able to keep steady framerates, but it rarely works out that way because of the outdated Parallel Processing programming environment that the Playstation 3 is based on...and the Parallel Processing environment is TERRIBLE for videogame programming.

Regardless of how much "help" Sony offers to developers, it will NOT matter. We heard the exact same thing with Sega and the Saturn, which was also based on Parallel Processing. Despite all the "help" developers received, the Saturn ALWAYS had problems.
Written by The Limey on 2008/03/14

What are you on about Krogan, I would hardly call the Parallel processing outdated, it is the way of the future. The Unreal engine was not fully developed for this kind processing initially and originally designed for PCs, Epic has prioritized their own games, Unreal on the PS3 and Gears on the 360 both look amazing. This is down to support and not hardware. When game developers pay huge sums for a half finished product, they should get better support.

Unreal engine obviously designed for Xbox 360 anywys since we all knwo for gear of war ...

But i am not suprise with this news until sony fixes their kits developement !

Because we all know its easier to port for 360 than ps3 !

Remember what Ea and Midways said for Burnout and Mortal Kombat !!!

oh and Krogan has no idea what he's talking about thats for sure...
Written by dudeman on 2008/03/14

Krogan is just upset about the past 2 months NPD numbers.
Written by blacktiger on 2008/03/15

oh Limey, i know what your saying but i dont think thats what their talking about maybe i'm wrong..

But to me its about how hard to program for ps3, and some developers can't afford to take their time and learn it, thats why, they dont take time with ps3, thats why it become an issue for them.

But we all know we are not suprise, because more developers said the same thing for Ps2, actually worse...

And look what happen PS2, its beating PS3 and Xbox360 !!

and Xbox360 made is so easy to program its still useless, cause Nintendo wii is beating xbox360 all the way,

MY POINT IS,

its either innovative or something new as in powerful new look,

Don't get me wrong, Xbox360 looks great, but PC will catch up in any second...

and thats why Xbox360 left behind.

Xbox live is nothing new, because once u get it online working, ppl will start playing...

And to me be honest with you, I wouldn't care about HOME.

But with HOME, i knw ppl will get addicted,

And they can be worse than Xbox Live because to be land u need money !!!!

Anyways back to issue, dont worry till later...

I MEANT :

blacktiger: Of course it's easier to port from the PS3 to the 360. The 360 can handle PS3 code easily. Especially since the 360 has more RAM and a better GPU.

We all know the PS3 can't handle 360 code because it is the weaker machine. Sony can shove the Cell up it's ASS!!!!!

That's the bottom line. The 360 is more powerful and easier to program for. Why else would the Unreal Engine work better on the 360?????

dudeman: And yes Krogan is mad about the past 2 months worth of NPD numbers.
Written by blacktiger on 2008/03/15

actually Pimp I'm not sure about that, supposed PS3 is harder to make games but its easier to port for 360 cause u can reduce it down,

But going from 360 to PS3 is not worth it, cause one thing it was design for 360 second , PS3 is a whole different language, belive me, slowly developers already saying PS3 is the best choice for lead development...

Do som research, IGN and Gamespot already said EA and Midway said it with out a fear, they are actually wanting to put down money for PS3 to be the lead development...

Now your right PS3 can't handle 360 code because its not the same, but because 360 is so easy to program it not a problem to make game first for ps3 and then port to 360 and reduce the graphic,

has anyone went to ign and check the comparison ...?

and your right Krogan is mad lol
Written by PimpDaddy on 2008/03/15

blacktiger: Hey i agree it is easier to make the game first on the PS3 and then port it to the 360. But we all know Sony designed the PS3 just like the PS2 to be difficult and thus harder to port from PC's or the 360.

They did this on purpose so that software developers would be forced to either choose which platform to develop for, or else choose the PS3 as the lead platform if they wanted to go multiplatform.

It's actually smart on thier part. Sucks for developers who spent all that time getting proficient with 360 programming. Sucks for 360 owners because thier games are dumbed down for the inferior PS3 hardware.

Kind of like last generation where PS2 games were ported to the XBOX.

Once again people that own a console other than a Playstation get f*cked. You guys can complain about the RROD all you want. But one thing Microsoft knows is software development. Sony should take notes on that aspect.
Written by Cryos on 2008/03/15

could you imagine a gaming world where sony develops the hardware and MS develops the software? THAT, my friends, would all flaming. Brothers would unite under an umbrella of gaming, and jointly, ridicule nintendo. lol

* meant to say "would end all flaming"
Written by PimpDaddy on 2008/03/16

Cryos: I might have to agree with you there. Expecially since Nintendo dropped out of the technology race long ago. Like I have said in the past. I am glad that Sony went with the overhyped Cell, Nvidia GPU, 512MB of RAM, HDD, and WTF even Blue-Ray. I am still pissed off at Nintendo for thier last generation graphics. F*CK YOU NINTENDO!!!!! Take that recycled, overclocked, fancy white Gamecube, and shove it up your A$$ right along with your Wii-motes...

I award a cookie to Microsoft and Sony for continuing to push the technology envelope. And I give a foot to the sack for Nintendo for overcharging for last generation graphics. Innovation my A$$!!!!!!

Its nice to see people who have no clue about hardware or even software for that matter argue like they know what they're on about.
Written by PimpDaddy on 2008/03/16

tr1p1ea: It's nice to see you too. Why don't you educate us. I was just talking sh!t to piss off Sony fanboys. But you opened your mouth. Why don't you add something to this thread rather than act like your better than everyone else.
Written by blacktiger on 2008/03/16

you know what pimp your totall right and as a nintendo fan, its heart breaking, to say wii is not my system either,

Oh and i still prefer sony to develop games even though MS makes it better, the fact that sony makes it differently, not a hollywood game !

Other than that, Let the price drop begin !
Written by blacktiger on 2008/03/16

tr1p1ea then dont bother posting message,

well argue when we hve to argue !

at least some of us giving a thought.

@@@@ Blacktiger

Dude, I’m really trying to stay out of this argument, but you sir, are an idiot.

“Sony makes it differently, not a Hollywood game???”

What the hell is this suppose to mean???

If you do really believe Sony starts to develop games before any sort OF Marketing Research or financial prospects (Hollywood), YOU ARE extremely delusional!

Dude, Stop smoking that Sony Class A crack already!!

P.S- BLACKTIGER SOUNDS LIKE tecno geek
