Devil May Cry 4

On to the other major gripe of the game -- the camera. Holy cow folks, more like Devil make me cry! A big part of ay DMC game is a healthy dose of jumping puzzles. Devil May Cry 4 is no exception to this rule. As many of you know, jumping puzzles are difficult enough when the camera is done well. Well in Devil May Cry 4, the camera may decide to reverse angles completely right in the middle of a jump. On top of that, the game does not consistently decide whether or not the direction you are pressing on the control pad is going to stick. In other words, if you press up on the screen and the camera angle reverses, sometimes the game lets you keep on going up, and sometimes it re-interprets the control pad direction you have pressed and makes you travel in the opposite direction. When the latter happens, it also makes you backtrack immediately which ends up switching the camera right back to where it was, which starts the loop all over again! It is ridiculously frustrating, trust me.

On to the important stuff – graphics and sound! Seriously though, Devil May Cry 4 is one of the best looking Xbox360 titles you will see to date. The polished models and textures look amazing, and although some claim that the Xbox360 has a few more effects than the PS3 version, I personally did not notice any difference, and I played both. The sound effects for the gunplay and swordplay are pretty much ported directly from the last DMC game, you will notice the familiar squeaky quirky effects when you collect orbs or navigate menus right off the bat. It is a nice touch that helps to connect gamers to the previous DMC games in a non-obvious way.

As I said, the game features Dante only for the last 1/5th of the game. When you do get to control the old man though, he does have all his fighting styles (Gunsmith, Swordmaster, Trickster, Royal Guard), and you can switch between them on the fly. Unfortunately, it feels like Dante just does not have the same backing behind him as Nero does. While the Dante sequences are fun to play, they are also much thinner than the Nero sequences, and any gamer will notice it immediately. Is it enough to put a damper on the last part of the game? Not at all – it is just something that will sit on the back of your mind.

I could go on for 3 more pages about DMC4, and I just might have if it were not for the mountains of reviews I have yet to do, but the simple fact is, despite the flaws, the game is great. Do not misunderstand though, the game is certainly a departure from the previous games, but only in the way that all of the next-gen game sequels are these days. In other words, the presentation is cranked up, and the content is dialed down. That is the main theme for next-gen sequels, but it is something I have come to expect from this generation. Bearing that in mind, Devil May Cry 4 is a great addition to any gamers’ collection, even if you only get to play Dante for a small amount of time.
