You know, it is pretty tough righ now to find very positive news on the Playstation 3 coming from E3. Most people have agreed that while the PS3 is not horrible by any means, it is strictly very underwhelming for the hype built up around it. The Firing Squad goes into detail as to just what these underwhelming features were and why it may cause the PS3 to not be as successful as Sony had hoped. Click on the link for more information.

O-boy, I can hear the Sony/MS Fanboys already ...

Anyhoo, people will be eating crow. The price debate is overblown .. the cheaper price of 360 in Japan has done nothing for it. If anything, it makes 360 look current gen compared to the much more pricy PS3.
Written by Oen on 2006/05/12
Yeah.. 200 dollars more makes it nextgen. I bet 70 dollar games would make it even more nextgen too. :)

Don't get me wrong, I really wanted to see the PS3 compete.. at a reasonable price level though. Yeah they do have one model 100 dollars more than the top 360, but its like the stupid version the 360 had also.. but with even less features and dumbdown stuff than what the lower end 360 got screwed out of. :(

I feel 360 and Wii are the next systems as of now. Unless PS3 shows me something I am not expecting. Ripping off Nintendo isn't impressive, and I believe Sony thought everyone would embrass it. :(

The PS3 is set to launch globally this November, priced at $499 / €499 for the 20GB version or $599 / €599 for the 60GB model.

According to Kutaragi, it will be "consumers who decide whether it's expensive or cheap. If a product offers charm, then buyers will be convinced."

Kutaragi then referred to the original PlayStation, which launched in December 1994 with a price tag of ¥39,800 (€280).

"With Nintendo's 16-bit machine selling for about ¥12,000 (€85) at that time, the media criticised us for priciness - but it became an explosive hit."

come on guys even the PS2 sells better thant the 360, SOny wil not be dead :P

as you can read above the price really doesnt matter

The PS3 is great!! and with exlusieve games like: Final Fantasy XIII and Metal Gear Solid 4 a console will always be a sucses.

well x360 for 399 for nearly same graphic isn't bad than getting 599 for just a little dumb graphic, wtf ! who's gonna pya for that, especially they got sensitive motion, and thats just basic too, and no rumble pak !

oh man like ign said, at least they should have on/off !

so we choose... this is pathetic, we never said have 7 processor and blue ray, we said have the best u can and give us a the reasonable price.

just because they were the best in ps2, doesn't mean anything.

sad part ! every body loose fast when one move is wrong...

by the way x360 not selling well in japan doesn't count, they are still afraid that america gamming will take over so we all know even if its better they try not to get it !

Not saying it will fail in Japan where people would snort FF if it came in powder form. Point is a majority of the public.. especially all the younger audience like up until 16 or so (where parents won't want to drop 600 dollars on what is a "toy") ..are being left out.

Lets be honest.. older gamers, and younger children with parents with cash will get the PS3 for the reasons you said, or just to have one. In America I feel most parents though see consoles as a game, and 600 dollars without a game to even play, is a lot to spend. When the 360 and Wii will do pretty much the same thing (in a parent's eyes) as the PS3, and are much cheaper.

Also Wii seems to be targeting a lot of younger and teen audiences with their ads and games. So PS3 will get Japan and some of the older audience, but that is it I feel. Will it sell.. yeah.. will it be a huge success, I don't believe so.

Value gamers still have a choice: the $200 Wii, $99 NGC, or the $129 PS2, $?? xbox1.0. They dont need to be dropping $600 on a PS3 ... and most likely those value gamers wont have an HDTV to even care about 600 PS3s or 400 360s. They just wnat something cheap to entertain their kids.
Written by Oen on 2006/05/12
Thats my point.. if they don't even have a HDTV.. but still want a next gen system.. then they aren't going to pay 200 dollars more when they won't see a difference.

I think that trying to adopt cutting edge / unknown technology has its pros and cons. This time though...to the average consumer, the cons appear to greatly outweigh the pros. Sony decided to place their bets on the pros outweighing the cons...meaning cell processor, blueray drive, etc. All of which are currently unknown forms of 1st generation technology. There has never been a cell process before, there has also never been a blueray player before. Usually the 1st gen models of new hardware devices suck because they're bogged down with performance issues, technical flaws, bugs, and whatnot. The first batch of 360s had issues as well. The thing is, w/ 360, they are using known technology, which is cheaper, and can provide nearly equal performance to its competition. Throw in the fact that Microsoft will let users choose when to enter into the HD video scene as the HD-Dvd drive is seperate. I have a tv with standard component inputs, it's max resolution is 480p.

My dvd player is fine, I don't need, and won't need a HD-DVD, or Blueray player for a long time, because I will not be buying another tv for at least 5 more years. I certainly don't want to be foced into buying a new tv, or blueray player now, especially if it costs me more money just to play Sony's rehashes.

sony have put to much fait in thier over pricd, blu ray. if thry ripped it out the price would have been reasonable, but as is the new sony, killing off any profitable division you have, by blurring its focus is smart.

I wont be getting a ps3 anytime soon, thats for sure.
Written by nixon (53) on 2006/05/12
well i have HDTV, i seriously don't care about resolution.... i thought ps2 is amazing with HDTV, and with ps3 will do much better, but after 2 days, i never cared cause i kept on focusin on gameplay !!!!

look at Wii do u think, ppl gonna focus on graphic, there is no time for that when u got metriod prime 3 shooting at u and u gota dogdge and shoot back with aim...

i have a feeling this might be a big thing for nintendo jsut like DS !!! but i always thought PS3 will win if they sell it for 399, but damn 499, is just way off with no wifi and 4in1 media and especially 20 gig hard drive !

now thats' weird, waht are they going to do with 20gig and 60 gig, ar ethey actually seperate like xbox360 or no !!! cause we then don't have to worry about !!

oh well good luck to sony and microsoft got what they want, and nintendo is already up there... ! especially with their speech !

Okay if Sony is putting so much faith in Blu-Ray why release a sku that can't display it? I.e. the $499 version with no hdmi support. A standard DVD can display in 720p which is basically what the $499 version will be doing with it's movies. So I'm going to pay $500+ for a PS3 that can play DVD's. I think not! Let alone $600 for one that does. Blu-Ray isn't even a standard yet. People look at the BIG picture here! Don't be blinded by the glitter of graphics.

Also one last note... Take a look at ALL of Sony's proprietary formats over the past 20 even 30 years (if you want to go back that far) and tell me which one's if any have become industry standards... Hmm, I'll give you a hint.......Z _ _ O You fill in the blanks.
Written by nixon (53) on 2006/05/12
sithis dread, i ahve no idea what u just said but u did get one big ass point ! 500 dollars for a dvd player with no hdmi output ! daamn that doesn't even make sense !

I was thinking about getting a PS3 awhile ago but it's too much after you buy every thing just to get started games, controller, warranty & a head set. I have a 360 and I love it. They let you chose the way you want to go. Like HD-DVD, Wireless Internet or wired, Hard drive size that’s upgradeable (You know there will be bigger hard drives), Wireless head set or wired, Camera, Silver or Gold XBOX Live….. I’m not a fan boy. I’m a gamer.I have them all so far. Until the PS3 go’s down in price it will have to wait.

Well, if they lower tha price(s) on tha console before Nov, maybe it won't be soo dead in tha water
Written by optaviusx on 2006/05/12
Yea yea everyone knows the ps3 will still be a success, but the ps3 is in an unenviable position right now. The 360 will be putting out games just as incredible as what is seen on the ps3 only at a cheaper price and Microsoft has a significant headstart an amazing xbox live service that I honestly don't believe sony will match up to 100% in the long run.

Call me a fanboy, as many seem to do, because I don't see the ps3 as unstoppable as everyone thinks its going to be, but how can anyone look at Halo 3's realtime trailer (master chief was actually controllable the trailer is an indication of how good the game will actually look) and justify the price difference between the 360 and the ps3 or even think to say the 360 can't match the ps3 graphically. The original xbox didn't have enough great titles to compete with the game machine that was the ps2, but the 360 does have a lineup that can match up against the ps3's.

Flame me if you want, but I've got a gut feeling...and I wouldnt be at all suprised if Nintendo kicked both their asses. :D
Written by Sithis Dread (3) on 2006/05/12
Test, I think you could be right. I don't think they'll kick their asses. But I do think Microsoft and Sony will be greatly shocked by what Nintendo actually does this go-around. Judging from the buzz leaving E3 this just may very well be the case.
Written by nixon (53) on 2006/05/12
well see what had happen to ds, i really liked the psp over ds, but really ds winning did make sense but with console i think x360 should be the winner.. and nintendo second since the graphic isn't that impress but i didn't say it should be bettter than x360 but at least close enough !

was it close enough cause i didn't see it clearly ???
Written by aic007 (14) on 2006/05/12
so with tax in NY a premo ps3 is gonna cost about 650. Lets see, a 360 with HDD w/tax 430 and about 4 games for the same price, what would you get? The launch line up is weak, just like the ps2's was. I know the only reason I bought a ps2 was for GTAIII, well no more exclusive contract. Oh wait yeah there is xbox got episodic content coming. Sony really screwed the pooch here.
Written by Blah (26) on 2006/05/13
I think the PS3 is worth it, I want a Blu-Ray player that doesn't cost 1500+ dollars lol. You know people buy a console not just because of the video games, but because they are used for other things. They other day I saw this 75 year old guy buy a 360 and said hes gonna use it for movies! I was shocked lol. I'm getting all the systems eventually and its gonna be a next next-generation. 8) Halo 3, FFXIII, Super Smash Bros.....funfunfun :)
Written by nixon (53) on 2006/05/13
well get one console of x360 or ps3 and then when price goes down get the other otherwise getting both with both of them having same games doesn't make sense !!! oh well i'm gonna get something will make good fun games and good reasonable price
Written by big m (4) on 2006/05/13
heh you blue ray fans.. i think buyin console cause of blue is stupid why?

like hddvd blue ray is still not standard and not accepted by industry. id u buy console cause of it it will be full of bugs like all new things that come on market. at the end you will be forced to patch your console all the time to get rid of bugs. not to mention hardware melfunctions . xbx has heating .. what will ps3 have ?heat? blueray melfunction? what else? so you will throw money and be dissapointed cause you bough 1st rev. of ps3. it will pass 1-2 years till blue ray or hd dvd get accepted by industry and yet there will be movies comming to DVD at that time. look how much passed till dvd players get mature.

M$ and NINTENDO did best choice of parts cause and xbox360 is very flexible and will accept technology as it comes. like hddvd upgrade.

ah yes and in meanwhile i will get lot more fun than you cause i will have extra 200 $ to spend either forza 2 wheel and some hott xmass games or wii from nintendo:) damn so what i am xbox fanboy but look at the facts before specs :) specs could cost you nervs at the end..
