Playstation 3 Dev Kit Firmware Issues At E3? Show Floor Woes >
2006/05/13 13:58:16: Posted by DM
According to an Activision employee we talked to on the showfloor, Sony was having some serious firmware issues with the PS3 dev kits at E3. According to the representative at the booth, at one point firmware updates for the PS3 dev kits were being sent out every two hours at because the units kept crashing. I witnessed this myself at the SOE booth when I played Untold Legends: Dark Kingdom. The game literally took 3 to 4 minutes to load the E3 demo, and had to be rebooted once. How true the firmware update claim is we cannot say, we can only report what was told to us, so take it as such.

Labeled With  sony e3 rumor

Thats not a glitch, just the Sony experience.

after update , its crash, then thats not a glitch or experience, thats a faulty system, more like its not finialized.... there will be more problem when the system finally comes out just liek xbox 360, but with xbox its okay cause its not really new... with ps3 everything is from scratch totally new technology, which means it will be more problems then u can even imagine !

jsut wait couple of months for a new version of it...

Let me just say this. The ps3 is 6 months away from launch. "6 months"

its not like it coming tomorrow
Written by otoole on 2006/05/13
haha right neoimpulse, it really is the Sony experience.

I was there in a backroom of the new Marvel game and they said they had to update the firmware many times & the crazy thing is they had a Xbox360 below the desk just in case of backups.

6 months is a short time for what they have to do. Credit M$ for a fast launch, I don't even think m$ knew it would take sony this long to launch. I'm no fanboy but sony is in big trouble this gen, unless they drop there price.

Why is this strange? PS3 is in a pre-alpha state crashes

are expected. Think in MS they have a many years old operating system (Win- XP,2000,NT,98,95) crashing everytime and Iam pretty sure many of you dont hesitate to use.

To ubi man: M$ can be credit for screwing up games sales, introducing a console prematurely only trying to gain market leadership, but failing to deliver both enough quantities of gear and enough quality of games.

might be but why is this labeled as rumor?

You would think it was running windows
Written by RastaDator (29) on 2006/05/13
The G: I am not sure if you comment have something to be with me, but anyways here is your answer

Irony apart, I know PS3 is running Linux but given the complexity of the PS3 (highly parallel) the OS needs

to be fully tweaked for maximun perfomance and efficient

resource management. Linux on the PS3 needs to behave like a multitasking and realtime system. Iron out all the OS bugs can take time. Give Sony a chance, If Sony does well we gamers will have 2 good consoles to play.
Written by otoole on 2006/05/13
rastaDator... ms went through the same stages as sony is and they didnt have half their problems. The console was only a bit rushed, but it has no serious problems. Only a few are defaulty.

As for the bad quality games, you must be mistaken. If the games out now arent satisfying you, then when you get your hands on a ps3 you will be very dissapointed.
Written by ubi man (2) on 2006/05/13
RastaDator] Don't be mad, M$ did rush 360 for all right reasons. When ps3 does come out{whenever that is} most people will have a 360 in there home and sure as hell will not pay 600$ for another game console. Remember most people are not hardcore gamers and will not spend 600$ on a game for there kids. In the end people will see 360 and ps3 are very much the same and not want to pay 300$ more for the ps3. Just think m$ is working on xbox 3 now and sony don't even have there third console out yet and they have 5 more years in the game. After this gen sony and M$ should own around 35% or 40% market share each. That was 360's job to gain market share and next gen M$ will own sony because they already have better games not to mention the best game [halo ] Just sit back and watch M$ take over like it or not M$ is here to stay.

Microsoft's early launch had it's problems, but anyone that can't see the major advantage it gave microsoft right now is just not looking hard enough :)
Written by RastaDator (29) on 2006/05/13
otoole: PS3 and X360 are totally different consoles, obviously Sony and MS would run into different problems at different stages.

Good games are getting out very recently, I was refering to launch games.

ubi man: I understand you but if the price is the determinant factor in this console war, Nintendo would be the winner :D. I really doubt that. Price is a factor but Sony has name and gear in the home of Japan and US people, that is called inertia, a LOT of people are going to buy PS3 because they trust Sony and when looking in a HD-TV running a PS3 game they get amazed and buy it even if a X360 stand at its side.

Sony sucks, I hope they die
Written by optaviusx on 2006/05/13
Well the thing that can't be underestimated regarding the 360 is the fact that its in a position right now to become the fastest selling console at the end of next month. Now one thing we gotta keep in mind is nothing is perfect. Whether sony claims to have 6 million ps3s shipped by march 2007 or not there is a 70% chance they will run into manufacturing problems like Microsoft did.

I don't know if sony is in a position right now to be 100% sure that they can meet 6 million consoles shipped by march 2007 if they were THAT sure they were capable of such ps3's would be shipping already. Despite how confident sony may seem they are worried about Microsoft's lead.

It happens.. I am not a PS3 fanboy (More of a 360 fanboy) but I have to defend sony here, there are going to be bugs with units espically before the actual system comes out... it does however look bad when stuff like that happens at E3, you would think they would fully test the systems beforehand.

The 360 rushed? How do you figure? Because they were a couple of months behind finishing up the hardware? That is hardly rushed. Do you think that they just all of a sudden decided to just build a video game console and through some parts together? Your dreaming. The planning required to get all of the various parts of the 360 together and out including of course the OS, Arcade, Live, the games, the hardware, speaks of alot of very advanced planning. I think if you are looking for a rushed console Sony is a better choice. The developers didn't even know about the gyroscope controller until 2 weeks before e3. Their OS and "dashboard" equivalant all strikes of being quickly thrown together. No, being behind on some hardware (MS) that required extensive planning and preparation years in advance but still meeting a deadline does not neccessarily mean the console was rushed. The intitial games maybe, but not the console as a whole.

Eh I think for early stages in development these games look awesome for PS3. Though when they are final, they will probably be 360 material, possibly a litttttllleee more better looking if the developer behind the game is really good. Like Heavenly Swords, for a 50% done game it looked really good and the gameplay looked solid. Ps3 is a good system, just Sony's conference and the way the introduced it this year really blew. Hopefully they can do better in the future.

As for fasting selling console, not long ago I heard 1.6 million 360 consoles were sold worldwide. Right now it would probably be at 2 million consoles sold or less. By the time Ps3 comes out i'd say it would be 5-7 million 360 consoles sold world wide, which is still pretty good.

Blah, MS shipped 1.4 million 360's to the US and Europe in nov. and dec. of 2005, they all sold. I'm willing to bet more than 600,000 units have sold worldwide in the last 4 months.

If you're going to undercut numbers, try to use numbers that could be real. :)

I would expect sony to run into less development problems because they make most thier parts, wheras microsft is a software company, so they licensed evrything to other companies (hence some of the xbox emulation problems) sony could reach thier goal but that woruld hardly meet consumer demand.

Also ps3 has much time to rectify these bugs, and well 360 run into some problems

Hi I new to this so bear with me I agree that the price of the ps3 is very steep, but it should not shock u after all we were told it would be so. Sony has not let me down with there consoles yet (there is always a first time) give them a chance don't kill the horse before u ride it.I am glad that sony has a rival in m$ it will push them to do better hence we all win give it time
Written by Mash (54) on 2006/05/14
The fact is Sony is trying to justify the price by saying how much more it should be worth, which is something consumers shouldn't have to be told. Sony is enforcing hardware into their console which most people won't use and making the whole price go up, optional is the way to go, Microsoft learnt that, Sony knew it at one point but now they decide they know better than the consumers.

well i tell ya guys both Wii and 360 choosed good hardware to run theyr console . i just wanna see what will happen with blue ray since all this new NON STANDARD hardware that comes out has really big problems. i can see hell lot of firmware patching for all ps3 owners cause of blueray short life on market. it is not eaven out . personally i think M$ build more stable platform that is not eaven worse in specs than ps3 and cost 200 less... i am gonna pick up 360 this holliday season with beloved forza 2 and wheel and i will still have extra $$$ to spend :)

Written by Jon (35) on 2006/05/14
They don't think they know better, they're just desperate for blu-ray to succeed. If sony loses one more format war the top brass has to wear dresses to the next mega-corp x-mas party.

Yes, Madden 07 on PS3 crashed 3 times while I was playing and talking with lead developer. He pretty much admits they're learning on PS3 now just as they were on 360 last year.

The 360 Madden 07 version this year should be much more polished from talking with him just due to the fact they've learned the system much better now.
