Well, it is finally official, my loyal readers. SCEI has discontinues the 20 and 60 GB versions of the PS3 in Japan. They apparently wish to concentrate on a single SKU, the 40GB. As you know, the 40GB version is laking certain features the 20 and 60GB versions had. Let's hope Sony does not follow suit here in the US, although it seems likely. PRESS RELEASE

Tokyo, January 10, 2008 – Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. (SCEI) today announced that it would discontinue shipment of both 20GB HDD and 60GB HDD configurations of PLAYSTATION®3 (PS3®) originally launched on November 11th 2006, in the Japanese market after the completion of the final shipment scheduled in January 2008. Upon termination of the shipment, the sales of both models will be limited to stock in the market.

Along with both the increased efforts to improve software development environment and the availability of a more extensive line-up of software titles for PS3, SCEI will vigorously promote the expansion of the PS3 platform by further concentrating on the 40GB HDD (CECHH00 Series) model introduced in November 2007, equipped with the core technology components that make PS3 the most advanced high-definition entertainment system while realizing lower power consumption.

Following the ever greater line-up of the PS3 software during this holiday season, more and more software titles are scheduled to be released beyond January from third party game developers and publishers such as “Devil May Cry® 4” (CAPCOM CO.,LTD./ Expected Release Date: January 31st in BD format), “METAL GEAR SOLID 4 GUNS OF THE PATRIOTS” (Konami Digital Entertainment Co., Ltd./ Expected Release Date: second quarter of calendar year 2008 in BD format) and “Ryu ga Gotoku KENZAN!” (SEGA CORPORATION/ Expected Release Date: March 6th in BD format) as well as SCE Worldwide Studios, Japan Studio titles including “echochrome” (Expected Release Date: Spring 2008 as PLAYSTATION®Network download content).
SCEI will continue to further expand the PS3 platform and create a new world of computer entertainment.

This will peeve off a lot of early adopters. However i do think these are the best 2 skus possible.

I wonder what the everlasting Krogan would say???

Hmmm...

Why are there STILL models of the 20GB and 60GB still floating around in Japan, unless they are STILL "unsold."

It's a shame that these products will be discontinued, because they really are quite a bit superior to the 40GB version of the PS3 that sells for $399...that 40GB version is missing USB Ports, Memory Card slots, and isn't backward compatible with PS2 stuff.

Oh well.

80 GB - for the hardcore ps3 fan that needs BC for their extensive ps2 library and extra ports.

40GB - for the new or softcore ps3 fan that doesn't want to play ps2 games on their ps3 and doesn't have a need for extra slots. Also the 40GB consumes less power which is always good.

Both have high def bluray players with builtin wireless and hdmi out.

Like blacktiger said....the 40GB ps3 DOES have 2 usb ports. imo that's plenty. For my 360 all i have ever needed is 2. One to charge my controller and one for the wireless adapter. Since wifi is built in to the ps3 all i need i one usb port.

I really think only the 40GB is even needed anymore. Sony finally got it right. Seriously who the hell buys a console to play last generation games? Backwards compatability is a feature not a necessity. If I wanted to play PS2 games I would just plug in my PS2. I bought my 360 and PS3 to play 360 and PS3 games. I give Sony props for keeping wifi, and making the HDD easy to replace. As big of a 360 fan as I am, i towuld have been nice if they had included wifi and the ability to replace thier HDD with any HDD like Sony did. The only thing still keeping me in the 360's corner is the games, controller, and Xbox Live. I am starting to understand and appreciate Sony's strategy, and for $399.00 it is alot more appealing than it was at $599.00

Games like Rock Band need the extra USB ports to plug everything in. They should have made the instruments Bluetooth.

Actually, I wish the PS3 had an extra USB port on the backside to plug the camera into. Same problem with the 360. The rear port gets used by the WiFi add-on or defunct HD-DVD add-on. Having the camera cords out the front full time looks like crap.

Hello Fellow Gamers. The X360 has 3 usb ports. 1 in the rear & 2 in the front. Now for the X360 you can purchase the "Nyko Xbox 360 USB Multitap & Card Reader". It cost ranges from $6 - $10. Also, this little device comes complete with compatibility for up to 5 different types of memory or flash cards. It might work in the PS3 as well. I know it works with the PC with no problems.
